- In 1947 The Family Theater began broadcasting on the Mutual Network. It would run until 1957 with 489 shows produced. While the show had a strong religious focus it was nonsectarian according to an agreement with the Mutual network. The show focused on moral issues and at times presented nonreligious adaptations of classic stories.
Patrick Preston produced the show and attracted a variety of Hollywood stars to star in the show.
James Stewart, Gregory Peck, Dennis Morgan, Irene Dunne, Robert Mitchum, Henry Fonda, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Shirley Temple, Natalie Wood, Barbara Whiting, Raymond Burr, Jane Wyatt, Charlton Heston, Lizabeth Scott, Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Gene Kelly, Kate Smith, William Shatner, and Chuck Connors* either hosted the show or starred in it. Many of the stars donated their time to the show.
