I really think, at a cognitive level, we are meant to not know how things actually work. I really think humans have 2 levels of awareness: Our natural instinctual drives, which primarily seek evolutionary success (ie:reproduction, food, etc.), and the level of awareness experience (ideology, beliefs, love, romance, etc.). For example if you look at humans strictly as animals who have to seek reproduction, protection, etc then you can clearly see that women seek extracting resources from men through their s3xuality. This applies at almost all levels when you break it down: In most relationships the men earn more than women. In the dating market men are selected by height and wealth. Women are overwhelmingly overrepresented as SBabies in comparison to men. Women are overwhelmingly overrepresented as creators on platforms such as OF. Women reject men if they have an android phone instead of an iPhone (iPhone users on average earn x2 what android users do). Women reject men if they do not pay for dinner, or at least 50-50. Fundamentally marriage is a financial agreement. If the man breaks the agreement, on average, the woman will get secured payment for her welfare. Marriage is biologically consistent with a man providing and the women being paid for her youthful years and reproductive capabilities.
At the experience level we perceive this as romance, love, religious marriage, etc. We also sometimes make biological reality conscious and express it outwardly, this sometimes comes across as crass. That guy basically said he expected s3x, which obviously is not very nice and seen as unkind. It's just that in regards to human evolution it probably is somewhat jarring to spend so much money on someone and not get what you wanted out of it especially if the other person expressed interest. Obviously we expect a higher level of cognition and sociability nowadays and so it's not seen as nice. It's seen as him not having emotional regulation and that her company was "good enough." We want to dissociate from biological realities and aspire to higher levels of abstraction. On the other hand you have statistics like 23-33% women claiming they purposefully mislead men in order to get them to pay for food and then ditch them with no relationship intent in the first place ("Collison, Howell & Harig (2019)). We however do not punish that because biologically men are more disposable than women so we don't care about the guy.

Which is what makes this so wholesome overall, even if it's a sad topic.
