The reason this is so intense is that for decades the best way to be selected for the Australian team was to play in the Sydney competition and once they moved to NSW they could only play for NSW. Queensland players hated this so in 1980 they changed it to State of Origin. Queenslanders took this game VERY VERY seriously and won the first game. Now due to media and promotion it's billed as State V State, Mate V Mate as teamates would sometimes play against each other.

They are representing there state's that they come from. State vs state, mate vs mate. Some of these guys punching each other are actually good mates and play in the same clubs together. But for 3 state of origin games a year the best players from the state where they played their junior footy go to war. They are playing for the people of their state. So alot of pride and passion. Players have discharged themselves from hospital against medical advise to play in a origin game. Players have had their heads stapled on sidelines and then kept playing. And origin games are played at a much faster pace and more aggression than normal rugby league games. State of Origin is considered the pinacle of rugby league. Even more desired than playing for Australia

  • @quackyduck1499
    @quackyduck1499 Před 3 lety +9

It's called "The Biff" here in Aus. They use to be able to get away with it back then. It was about passion. Passion for the game and passion for your state. And yeah they could get away with it, In they wouldn't be suspended from the normal season. Now we call for " Bring back the Biff"
The early days in the eighties it was more about the country boys V the city boys.
NSW ( the blue ones) were all modern hipsters. Like sydney was a big international modern city. Business men wore suits and shit.
Queensland back then was so country. Businessmen in Brisbane ( the capitol of Queensland) wore shorts with long socks and short sleeved shirts with ties. The early eighties the traffic lights stopped being red, amber and green at midnight, and just blinked amber.
These state of origin games mean more to us than the whole bloody season. We beat the shit out of each other, then get pissed (drunk) and laugh our heads off afterwards.
It's like the Aussies and the Kiwi's. We give each other so much shit. But push comes to shove and we have each others backs like no allegiance you've ever seen. Goes all the way back to Gallipoli and still holds true today.

For many years there were Queensland V New South Wales games annually. Selection for the teams was based on where you currently playing. NSW had legalised poker machines so the NSW clubs had access to far more money then the Qld clubs. NSW clubs put poker machines in their club houses and used the extra revenue to pay the players. The good Qld players went south for the paycheck and were eligible to play for NSW. Qld were routinely thrashed.
In 1980 the format was changed to State of Origin where the eligibility was determined by where the player had played junior (under 18 years old) football. The first match was a one off experiment. Arthur Beetson (Captain of the Australian national team and captain of the NSW club he played for) was captain of the Qld team. Michael Cronin (also a member of the Australian national team and played for the same NSW team) played for NSW. Beetson tackled Cronin and while he had Cronin on the ground deliberately punched him in the face. Set the tone for every game since.
I spoke to Michael about the incident years later (his family owns the pub in Gerringong where I lived for 20 years) and he had no animosity towards Artie. He knew what the game meant to Queenslanders and would have disappointed if Artie hadn't led by example. They continued to play for Australia and the NSW club and State teams for another 5 odd years until Artie retired.
To get picked to play for Australia is easy, you just have to be an Australian citizen. But to play for Qld you have to been raised in Qld and that raises the bar dramatically. I'm a Queenslander in case you haven't guessed.

Clearly the answers as to why they fight are coming from the younguns...they are partly correct but not fully. New South Wales is the most populous, most wealthy, most advantaged state in Australia. Traditionally, although it has changed in recent decades, Queensland was one of the poorest. Prior to there being a national Rugby League competition the game was played by clubs across cities under the governance of state authorities. The richest competition was the Sydney competition. Queensland players would learn their trade in the premier Qld competition - Brisbane or in a regional city competition and then head off to Sydney to make the big bucks. Enough so they only had to work casual jobs outside of League. By the 70's there was a growing number of full time professional players but almost exclusively in Sydney were many clubs were funded by sporting clubs that could run poker machines/slot machines. Queensland clubs could not compete. So in the annual representative competition Queensland would play against a New South Wales team that would have Queensland players in it. So Queensland would endure all the slights of being the poorer state - all the inbred country cousin jokes - and then play football and be beaten by their own players. Then came State of Origin and the world discovered that Queensland is actually better. So for Queenslanders every fight is built upon being the slighted underdog and for New South Wales it is defending their right to supremacy. The really cool thing is that in most of the fights you have players that are best friends that play beside each other every week but come State of Origin you see only Maroon or Blue. You don't see your friend only the colour he is wearing.

Well said, thats about my assessment of it as well. Funily enough, the NSW players think their comp is the oldest comp, technically it is but only by 1 year. The QRL is only 1 yr younger than the NSW cup comp. Yes the NSW were paid more and the money was in NSW. But it is now coming to be a NRL National Rugby League. Teams from all over the country will start (again). Hopefully doesnt get destroyed by no super league repeat? So far, teams are mainly from NSW but there are 3 representative teams from QLD and 1 from Victoria. Although unhappy NSW people believe that the Vic team is full of QLDers... hahahahaha but not true.

Rugby league in australia is mostly played by 2 states and this game is to showcase which one is the best. Its similar to the east vs west all star game in the nba except instead of the conference you currently play in its your hometown state. So they play very seriously and passionately

Just pure hatred coming to a head basically, caused by one jersey inflicting pain, suffering and humiliation on the other for many years!
Pre 1980 the New South Wales (The Blues) have for the most part dominated the inter-state battles for many decades and always won. They had the best competition, most of the best players, the better contracts and because of this they lured the best players from Queensland (The Maroons) to play in their competition. This now meant these Queensland players had to play for New South Wales if they got selected in the inter-state battles instead of their home state.Because of this The Maroons never really matched The Blues and were belted continuously and relentlessly in the annual inter-state battles because their best players were now playing against them. This was traumatic for Queensland so something had to be done to stop this senseless slaughter.
So in 1980 a law came to pass that changed the one sided affair for ever. You now have to play for the state that you were first registered(originated) from if you got picked in the inter-state battles, reguardless of which state you are playing in now.So the Queensland registered players playing for New South Wales now had to come back and play for their home state. So as the old saying goes...
    "The Rest Is History."
For the last 40 years we have seen one of the most intense sporting rivalries ever!!!
The Blues : "We have the best state team!"
The Maroons : "We'll see about that!"
Some of these players are teammates at club level but are fiercely loyal when it comes to representing their state from which they come from,so if they happen to oppose each other here they become the most bitter of rivals!
Just a great recipe for explosive fireworks which should explain what you see in this clip! 👍

It is the biggest game the sport has and the rules are more relaxed, to create the spectacle, but the players are very competitive and sometimes that spills over. pressure and anxiety with these boys equal a punch in the face, in the past, they would let it go early to get it out of their system.

not even close, State of Origin. you had teammates from the regular season going head to head in these games and they hated each other when they put these jersey's on. it was like a switch. you get the Maroon or Blue Jersey and you were a different beast.

In WW2 the Australian government drew a line north of Brisbane as the point at which they would defend against the Japanese. Queensland was largely left to defend itself. The older Queenslanders hated NSW for this.

Pride of where you are born . Either Queensland or New South Wales . The season isn't over. it's in the middle of normal season. I've played rugby league in NSW and Queensland , and the hatred between two states comes to a maximum when it's State of Origin. The saying is " state against state , mate against mate " . It's a proper hatred. OOh, and by the way. You picked out Martin Bella because he didn't " look" like a rugby league player. But he was / is one tough hombre. Lovely bloke too.

I know that this video is 2 years old but you need to know that rugby has two versions, Rugby League and Rugby Union. It is the same that gridiron has American football and Canadian Football. State of Origin is Rugby League and is a contest between 2 states in Australia, Queensland and New South Wales.

State of Origin is the biggest part of Rugby League each season. It’s State Vs State. Queensland Vs New South Wales. They have 3 games overall for the decider of the champions - Queensland or New South Wales. They choose the best players from club teams for each state. So someone you’ve played beside as a team for the whole season, you could be rivalries with them in State of Origin. It’s literally mate Vs mate (or ‘friend’ as non Australians call it) Every player is so determined to be picked to represent in State of Origin. That’s why they’re so passionate on the field. When they use the word “Cattledog” in one of the fight scenes, that was a code word that could be yelled during a fight and everyone would just run in and start fighting whoever they wanted.

Historically NRL in Australia was a Sydney based league that through the 80s and 90s, added quiet a few more clubs from outside Sydney. . Majority of the players were from Sydney or Brisbane ( Melbourne, Victoria is the home of AFL so Rugby league wasn't as big down ) there so it is actually kind of a super league type thing with the best being cherry picked. The 80s ones look crazier because they didn't hit them with fines back then. you might be out for a game or 2. They use to have clotheslining and spear tackles, particularly in the 70s but were outlawed after a lot of permanent spinal injuries. these changes becoming news stories in the 90s. You'd probably find most of the fights are game 3, with series at 1 a piece.

Historically there was the QRL and NSWRL, Both were solid leagues with lots of players and clubs, when they formed the NRL, they kept NSWRL and Disbanded QRL, There is also alot more issues between the states as well that forms the rivarly it is kinda hard to explain but and not all of it is related to sport.

To win the State of Origin series is as precious as oxygen, the tackles are bigger the atmosphere is bigger and the hatred is intense despite players can be best mates and club team mates on Saturday but come Origin Wednesday its war. Queensland and New Sth Wales are the only teams in the comp, best of 3 games wins, games can't be a draw and its played during the NRL season 4 - 6 wks apart. Fights used to be a huge part of the game and the refs were super lenient on punishments with no regular season punishments. Fights worked like NHL were the 2 players that threw punches got 10 mins in sin bin or in extreme cases sent off for game. For a while now the Leagues have been cleaning it up. Now fighting isn't as tolerated with reg season suspensions, fines and not being selected in future games although the huge tackles and bumps are legal and within the rules even if bones break. selection for the National squad is usually picked from QLD NSW lineups so apart from pure hate there is a lot riding on player performance, so everyone lifts during Origin. I'm just a QLD supporter and I'd rather get cancer and see QLD win the shield then live a long life and see NSW even score once.

It's the same teams every year. There is disagreement as to where Rugby League was invented (either NSW or Queensland) and so the match is so intense bc they're fighting over who gets to say their province invented the game. Hence the name, state of origin.

  • @dreamtimeemotionalwarrior7057

They fight because it means more to them then any other NRL game, mate against mate, state against state. Although if you throw a punch these day you are sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes of the game leaving your team to play that 10 minutes a man down.
Growing up in the 80's and 90's was the best for they would fight then get on with the game and then fight again and move on once more.
Passion for your state and for ya mates, S.O.O is the best games of the whole NRL season.
