To keep it simple: Any tackle above the shoulders is illegal, tackling in the air is illegal, tackling without the ball is illegal, tackling without arms is illegal, lifting a player into the air past 90 degrees is illegal. And also statistically rugby is safer than american football (for concussions) because there are rules to tackling and we have been taught since a young age the correct form/ way of tackling

To add on to this, NFL teams hired rugby tackling coaches to help prevent concussions when the controversy of CTE started up, Seahawks being the first team to do it when they went to the super bowl with Marshawn lynch and they had only 1/3 of concussions and since almost every team has gone through the training of cheek to cheek tackling. I played professional rugby and it’s much safer tackling techniques

Yeah here u on that one not listening to anyone that says usa football is safer. The fact is ive seem more injuries every rugby game then american football games. The nose wont get broke in football the jaw and cheek bone wont get broken. The ears wont get ripped off. And those accidental knees when people swoop in cave break jaws and cave in skulls.

    • @anthonyharris3490
      @anthonyharris3490 Před rokem +22

@@brandonholsather2171 that’s a lie. American Football is a lot worse for significant injuries because the tackle technique is dreadful. Helmet’s actually contribute to CTE because it’s trapping the skull and spine, so there’s more rattling going on within. Conditioning is also a lot higher with rugby players because they can’t afford to take a down off, so less critical mistakes are made

He saw me race a guy at PT one morning and invited me to come play a game. Gave me a quick run down of the rules when i got there and just said run and pitch the ball back hahahahahaha. Rugby takes more of a squared away athlete because there is no breaks between every stoppage and much more contact/action but football players get that sense of protection from pads so they go in fearless that’s why there is much bigger collisions in football highlights but with that being said the pads absorb a lot of the impact

I am back teaching at the same school I left and trying to change the minds of football coaches to really let me teach these young men and women that want to play a contact sport how to do it right! Anyway, the beasts you see are at the top of their game most men play Div II or III men's rugby look for a club near you and give it a try, you will fall in love instantly!

In fairness, as a decent, yet quite small, amateur rugby player in Ireland in my youth, the only serious injury i got was a broken nose in training in an accident by a guy much smaller than me. They teach you how to tackle and take tackles properly. Also, knowing we have no pads, makes it a bit of a natural instinct to position yourself right, whether tackling and receiving one. There are always many exceptions to that and accidents of course. I still would feel safer playing rugby than NFL tbh. Peace :)

"What is a foul in this sport?"
Generally speaking, most of these tackles are legal .... they're just text-book, well-timed and really hard solid tackles. Welcome to Rugby. Because play doesn't stop with a tackle, the defensive side wants to make CRUSHING tackles, to rattle the ball carrier ... so to create opportunities to claim the ball and turnover possession. Basically, a good defence.
That being said ... there is a couple of them that are a bit suspect and might get penalised.
Basic tackle rules: Can't tackle a player who doesn't have the ball (Tackling without the ball ... penalty). Sometimes a player may unload the ball ie. pass or kick and possibly get tackled well afterwards (Late tackle ... penalty). No tackles above the shoulders ie. head and neck (High tackle .... penalty, possibly sent off and possibly on report). No shoulder charges ie. lead with the shoulder like a battering ram, tackler has to use his arms and "wrap" the player (penalty) ..... shoulder charges used to be legal once upon a time. No "spear tackles" ... what we call spear tackles is when a player is picked up, up ended and driven into the ground head first ... like a spear (penalty and possibly sent off). No tackling a player in the air ... a player jumps high to receive a ball that's been kicked and a tackler nails him from below, can't do that. Got to let the player land ... then tackle him (penalty).
"Is Rugby more dangerous than NFL?"
That debate keeps going on and on and on. Pads ... no pads. Bigger players, etc. Who hits harder? Everybody has theories ... just theories. Whatever. It's never going to get decided.
Here are some facts: Every player that takes the field in Rugby TACKLES and GETS TACKLED, no matter what position you play .... EVERY player. If you don't tackle or get tackled .... you were on the bench or spectating. Does EVERY player on the field in a NFL game tackle and get tackled? When a player in Rugby gets tackled, play doesn't stop. It continues. Deliberately getting tackled is a basic tactic to get field position and set up for the next play. How often does play stop for NFL?

I remember watching that tackle occur live at 2:03, it still sits in my subconscious..
Little brief description of rugby for those who dont know.
The goal of rugby is get over the try-line where you have to physically place the ball on the ground which is then followed up by a place kick (conversion), like your American Football. The other way to get points is if the opponent violates any rules that warrant a 'penalty', where we can go for another 'place kick' (or a scrum or lineout kick) which awards 3 points as opposed to a try which is 5, followed up the conversion attempt, awarding 2 points. Tries and conversion go hand in hand but you can miss the latter, only resulting in a 5 point gain, awarded from a try and not a total of 7.
    Basic Info:
    1. Pass the ball straight or backwards - forward is well forward and not allowed.
    2. Can kick the ball from hand to gain yards into enemy territory which is a gamble as you will either lose possession or reclaim it from the kick - this is used when you cant get through a defensive line or their line and or fullback as pushed up leaving space for a kick and run to retake and make ground.
    3. That thing of the players being bent down, bound together, is a 'scrum', awarded from foul play, it gives the attackers a chance to execute a set piece or move, very much like in American Football, its like your hucks, just not for every single play as only arises from foul play. The opponents can however overpower the attackers scrum and push them backwards to gain the ball back using their feet. A scrum is used to open the playing field up as less players are roaming or to gain yards close to the try-line or to result in a penalty from applying too much pressure in the initial hit, causing the opponents to collapse the scrum for example which is not allowed.
    4. When players are tackled, the ball carrier needs to release the ball back into play once on the ground (why you see many of them stretch their arms out to place the ball back on their side to be picked up), and this is where the opponents pile in as they are going to try rip the ball out of your hands (theres more to it but thats the basic principle), which will result in you either giving it away or holding onto it (which is a penalty as you must not stop the ball from being played in essence), this is why the teammates pile in once someone is tackled to 'clear' and prevent the opponents from getting over the ball and causing a penalty. Teammates clearing these 'rucks' also allows the ball to become readily available for faster movement and plays.
    5. When the ball is kicked out (there are other things like where the kick took place, did it bounce beforehand but thats for another time), this is a 'line-out' where more set moves are executed, like your hucks, so players try move around the line-out to confuse the opponents as the thrower is throwing for a pre-determined distance and height depending on what 'move' they are doing and this is why the opponents try mimic their movement so they can get their jumpers at the same location in the line so they can jump with the attackers to try contest the throw.
    6. Player jersey numbers from 1-8 are the 'forwards', these are usually the bigger guys that participate in scrums, ruck clearing, lineouts and general defensive-line bruising, think of them are your 'Guards' in football. Then the numbers 9-15 are the 'backs', think of these are your 'Receivers'.
    7. One last way to get points, is by going for drop goals which awards 3 points. This is where you can drop the ball and upon the bounce, follow with a kick and must go in-between the up rights. Perfect example of this for me anyways, would be the retired English legend Jonny Wilkinson.
I think that's the general idea of rugby without diving into the specifics of each areas and the rules.
    LETS GO BOKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE #RWC23

Just to help out a bit here, Rugby union tackles have to be with the arm, league they can use their chests more, league was for many years a professional sport so higher trained athletes but since union became pro the gap has closed, however, they are still great games to watch, the levels shown tactics, tactical awareness and speed, especially with some of these lumps moving like juggernauts is awesome.
