DESCRIPTION:
Have you ever thought about colouring your beard? ME TOO! But I have never done it despite the fact that my grey hair is coming in fast and furious.
In fact I have talked to tons of guys who watched my GQ Beard Trimming Videos who have also thought about it and have DM'd me about it . But for a collection of reasons most of us are unsure about trying it out. There seems to be a weird stigma attached and plenty of guys feel a sense of shame about it. Probably doesn't help that there is an army of opinions online shared by guys with incredibly low personal standards and artificially inflated self esteems. However I don't judge you... I'm just here to help.
As it turns out I have a little experience with hair colour! I used to work for a company that was one of the top manufacturers of hair colour in the world. So let me answer as many questions as I can for you about how to successfully colour your beard if that's what you choose to do.

I color my beard and don't care when people point it out. I've been prematurely grey since I was in middle school. I'd rather look 33 while I'm actually 33 than look like I'm 45+
Good for you!
I've earned my silver. Had I gotten it for free, I probably wouldn't appreciate it either.
@@TheFightingSheepMy beard is more gray than not and I didn’t earn it, whatever that means.
Use Simpler brand beard dye...NOT harsh, super easy, and actual color match. Nobody will notice if you pick the right shade
@@skarhead7597CZcams brought me back to this video after I watched it months ago. I saw your comment and just had to say I swear by Simpler!! Easy application & natural looking. Especially the new partial coverage formula.
The amount of effort that went into this video really shines through. Great results!
Thanks so much!
Yes ... great result... but what about of work are you talking about?... just regular stuff!.. ???
I've watched a lot of beard care/trimming videos and none come close to yours Matty. They are super informative, practical and show all the steps. In short, fantastic.
Thanks Justin! I am doing my best to share stuff that is simple and approachable for most guys. I appreciate the positive feedback!
I think the color variations in a beard add a lot of visual interest. Going to a single color defiantly makes people look younger if that's what you're going for. There's another option called Cleverman that is worth a look.
As a hairdresser, this is a perfect video for anyone who will actually appreciate this vid in its entirety. Thank you Matty for this excellent tech info 💚
Thanks Heather!!! I appreciate the positive feedback.

@@mattyconradgroomingGreat video! Thank you! Very educational indeed. Will be learning from your channel for sure.
Thanks for the video! I could tell you had a blast making it, it was such a joy! A video disambiguating the difference between clippers and trimmers and everything else would be amazing - I'm trying to get into DIY beardcare and get some proper tools but it's definitely confusing starting out. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the positive feedback. I’ll get to work on that video right away!!!
Tell the newbies who want to baldify themselves they don't need scissors and should use something better than a beard trimmer, both make me cringe seeing it
How incredibly credible! Very thorough, impressive, and insightful! Wow. Matty excellent vid thx!
Yoooo you killed this video man I LOVE that you give the "nerdy" information in a way that is effortless and cool it's truly impressive
Thank you! I needed to find a format that helps me access my inner nerd without making it boring for people 😂
Excellent detailed explanation. Thanks for your effort and Time Matty!
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Excellent Video! Instructional, informative, and easy to watch and absorb the information!
This is the most useful video so far. Real demonstrations and no short cuts. I understand how to perform this coloring and I will definitely apply them. I am nerdy too and I like details. Thanks.
Thanks for the positive feedback!
amazing! one of the best videos i've seen on youtube! very informative!
Excellent video with worthwhile content done right. Subscribed! For goatees that are kept really short, though, I guess we just have to live with the gray.
Really top quality video and very informative. I assume as the hair grows out, to maintain the look it’s a repeat of what you just did?
I look forward to the trimmer vs clipper video…..thank you for your hard work, love your videos.
Absolutely fantastic video and so far the best information ever I watched
Man thank you
You sir earned a sub with this amazing, well informative, and entertaining video. Well done.
I believe the Just For Men for beards that you mix is a demi-permanent hair dye, not permanent. I have used it for years and researched it extensively. However, you are a professional and might know something I don’t, which is why I was a bit puzzled. Overall, I love your videos, they inspire me and I wish you could be my barber. You’re the best.
Just discovered this channel ! Fascinating video, as I dye my beard fairly regularly without really knowing very much. I have a short grey beard that I dye a little just to reduce the greyness without removing it all. Unfortunately my skin has started reacting to the dye and causes unbearable itching for about 2 weeks. So I’ll try something organic and see if that helps.
Excellent education as always Matty! Love your channel man! I have colored my beard since I was in my early 30’s. That’s twenty years now! Medium grey is my color. Just knew it worked. But now I know why!! THANK YOU as always for your expertise and friendly delivery! Cheers
Thanks for the encouragement Aaron! I appreciate it.

Excellent video Matty! As a guy who rocks more of a 2-3mm stubble beard and loves the salt n pepper look thats getting just a bit too grey, the tips about using Vaseline, a semi-perm and only rinsing, not washing, it out after were excellent advice! Thx much!
Thanks for watching!
You have a fine looking beard there Matty, well done for growing and maintaining the style.
I appreciate you saying so. Thanks for the compliment.
Brilliant video.
I used to colour my beard, religiously for some years. Too much high maintenance. And I used many products. But now I have embraced the grey and I am very happy with how it looks. This video is brilliant, and I wish it had come to me a couple of years earlier. Thank you and I have subscribed to your channel. Some very good information.
That’s awesome to hear. I personally love it when guys just embrace the grey!
I have been coloring my beard for over 10 years. I have used many products. the men's product just don't work as well as the ladies. I use to have dark brown and now at 70, I would have WHITE hair. So i would recommend trying several different products to find out which one works best. The reason I use a women's product is that one does not have to use the entire product but use a glass to mix a small amount so that an expensive product can last months. I color every two weeks, use a beard conditioner often.
Always top notch man!
Thank you brother 🙏🏻
Thanks for the video! I only have a goatee, but it is long (think ZZ Top or Whisker Wars). I am 52 and do not mind the gray that I have in my whiskers, but I do realize that in my profession (teacher), there is quite a bit of ageism toward men who are not in admin after age 40 (at least locally). I am looking to change schools and districts, and have wanted to reduce my gray so my potential employer does not think that I have one foot in the grave.
I do believe that I will leave my coloring to a professional, as my whiskers are too long...and I would make a mess. Thanks for making me not feel silly for even considering this.
I started going grey at 30. My beard was almost totally white by 45. I used to color it, because I felt like it aged me too much to have a white beard at such a young age. Recently though, I've embraced it, mostly just because I just don't enjoy the maintenance of keeping the color up. Having a full white beard at my age (54) DOES age me. It's undeniable. However, it's also kind of unique and unusual, and I've learned to love that.
I just picked up something called Volt. What I got is for short beards but works really well and is extremely easy to use. Why color it? My mustache has gone really light grey so it doesn't show up very well now. It's really simple to use, a brush that's like an eyelash brush for women. Shake it, brush/blend it through & you're done - no shower/washing it off, etc. I believe they have one like it for longer beards but I"m not sure (I shopped for it based on *my* beard type). It has to be done frequently but it's really easy to use and not all chem-land, more like how women use their eyelash brushes.
Sounds interesting! I’ll check it out! Thanks for sharing!
That is a REALLY nice coat. Great video.
The thing with colouring beards is that you don't have to overdo it, in terms of time, quantity and shade, it is just to soften grey hairs and level discolorations. You don't have to leave the product the time required, just a couple of minutes will do to give it a fresh look without anyone noticing. Don't forget to give the eyebrows a touch too.
Hello there Ivan. I hope you are doing well. From reading your comment I take that you know what you're talking about. I'm in my mid-40's and hace noticed that my eyebrows are thinning. In my late 30's I stated noticing that I have male pattern baldness up front. It doesn't bother me, but I'm not gonna lie, the thin eyebrows really do. I haven't done any research on this topic, but after reading your comment I figured you could possibly get me pointed in the right direction. If there is any information you could offer, I would greatly appreciate it! Take care and I hope you have a wonderful week.

I use henna to dye my nearly white beard back to its normal black/brown, and it works a treat, is very forgiving in its application, and doesn’t irritate my skin. Or also creates a nice rich depth of natural looking color variations.
How long do you wait after dyeing ? Is there any particular brand do you use ?
I freaking love this guy. A man's man.
As always great info. I miss my time in Vancouver and visiting your place in Gastown, in my top 3 barbers I've been to in the world!!
For the vaseline tip I also put it on my nose, edge of the ears and neck....maybe I'm just too messy :D
The creative ones always are! Great tip!
Great video. I am letting this thing go gray (it is coming on fast), but this was an incredibly informative video.
I have tried every beard dye out there. For me, the Control GX is by far the best product I have found. Easy application, no mixing and no skin irritation.
I concur!! I’m so glad I found this product!
This was a great watch, thanks.
God bless YOU, Matty
Top Quality video went into great detail very informative
Thank you so very much, Matty
I love the use of Crayons ha ha ha! I've never looked at a video guide to colour my beard before, but it's good to verify that I did everything correctly! Love the top tip of lifting the cheek to trim so you leave a nice natural curve to the sideburns! 👍🤙loving your work buddy.
Touch of Gray beard product is hard to find in local stores the past couple years. They used to all have it, now none of them do, particularly for the beard. I have to order online. I have more gray and white in my beard than I "feel," and also people confuse my son and I for brothers, so I don't want to look older than I feel, and my face looks younger for my age (no wrinkles other than around my eyes). That's why I use the Touch of Gray. I have no desire to pretend to be 20, so this product makes me look younger than my birth certificate, and more in line with how I feel. I started using the Touch of Gray for my hair too for the same reason. I get awesomely natural looking results from both products. Very happy with them.
Aesthetic perfection. Much appreciated.
Thanks for watching!
I’ve been using just for men for 6 years, I have dark brown hair & my beard is nearly completely white, I’ve found the most natural colour is light brown & blonde mixed together. Any of the others are way too dark & fake looking. Great video Matty, I’ve never considered using a semi permanent as well
Great advice there! Maybe I should do a comparison video
I think this is a really good subject, there’s not much real world advice out there. I’m bald (shaved) & bearded so for me it’s super important to get it right as it’s the only thing to style 😂😂
Yikes to the Mite 😂 I'm glad I stumbled on your video as I've been growing a beard. Unfortunately, it's got more salt than pepper. However, I've been told it looks distinguished! Thanks for the info. It is very helpful. Aloha from Maui🤙
Hello! Love the video! I see you have a Brio V2, just curious why you are using a separate trimmer for your beard lines instead of just using the Zero Blade or the Body Blade on the Brio? Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
I wished i‘d have that great growth of facial hair. Your beard is awesome and very good looking!
Although I don’t have much facial hair i still love watching your videos. Mad professional!
Thx!
Great tips: using a brush and comb to apply, how to get deeper into the thick growth, touching up with permanent dye, how to keep the adjacent skin from getting dyed... I have been using JfM Control GX for about a year. I leave it on for 20-30 minutes without skin irritation and get a rich brown with natural irregularity. The colour lasts and only requires redoing every couple of weeks to cover new growth. I used JfM Beard&Mustache a couple of months ago. My beard turned nearly charcoal black despite using the medium dark brown shade. I followed the directions to wait 5 minutes after all the hair was coated, but it must have taken me 20 or more minutes to get it applied everywhere. I have gone back to Control GX. It's the best and there is no possibility for error.
Great advice here! Thanks for watching.

Sounds like a smart guy. Thanks for the support!
Thx so much for the beard video. It was very informative.
I've been colouring my beard for the past few years. If I don't it would be mostly white!
Are you saying to not only use the Just for Mean Beard and Moustache? This is has been my method. It doesn't seem to last so long tho.

Hey Matty great video, this was really explained well, thanks for sharing! Can you do a video how to line it up your beard with a straight razor doing it yourself?
I don’t usually use one on myself to be honest. But I bet I could come up with something.
I’d love your thoughts on a red head going grey. My beard has lost its natural red and it’s been a tough time finding something that helps give me that natural red look
I’d dyed mine purple.
@mattyconradgrooming thanks for this tutorial was really helpful. Question though, if I miss a few spots or some areas didn't get dark enough can I dye again in a couple days?
Excellent video as usual! Matt, your hair is amazing in this video, what product are you putting into it to maintain the swept look on the sides and preventing your top length from falling down the sides?
I use the pomade from www.victorybarber.com
Yes, please for a video on trimmers and clippers.
Would be stoked to hear your opinion on the Control GX beard shampoo? The one that applies colour to greys over a period of time slowly with daily shampooing. I've had greys since i was i teen so I'm use to it; however with my beard it's tough accept. I like the salt n pepper look but with my greys they are no way uniform and are in mess all over the place! I've had a hard time enjoying the growth of my beard with how my greys look. I've used the Just for Men on my hair in the past and know how strong those chemicals are and my fascial skin can be sensitive and worried how it would react to semi or permanent dye to beard? Would you recommend the beard shampoo for someone's greys that are not uniform and a real mess everywhere?
This is the video I've been looking for. I am substantially more gray, and the gray is in patches, almost like entire stripes of gray all the way down from cheek to the bottom. I am way nervous about a permanent color, but am interested in trying the semi permanent. I dont dislike my gray, just kinda want to tone it down a couple of notches. I have a fairly long beard so I wonder if you think there is enough product for a long beard in one unit.
A semi permanent will tone it down a bit. Try to apply it to the Grey patches first to give it longer to process on the parts you want darker.
My cheeks are super light and not as full, so this gave me the idea to just do the cheeks and the "mustache blending hairs" to really gage if I should go short or long for the time being. I'm not quite done filling in, but it's been getting a lot more full over the last 2 years.
*guage
@@martasoto3403 I got many more smart with more beard in 11 months, trust me. 🙃
I thought about dying my salt n pepper hair & beard, so I ordered Revlon Colorsilk 100% gray coverage from Amazon. I thought I'd watch a couple of videos beforehand and yours was the first one I happened to watch. Now I'm thinking this is just another thing that's gonna take too much time away from living my life. If a girl doesn't like me because of my hair color than she's not the one for me.
It’s honestly not that much time since it becomes like a routine every month. Which is only 12 times a year. It’s self care and perspective. Not about a girl. It’s for yourself to feel fresh and looking good.
30 minutes of watching tv or doing something you regret like scrolling thru social media can be applied to some self love.
I used to think like you but now I take time out everyday and week to put in some effort. It makes a difference in every aspect of life. Have good day
I have been coloring my beard for several years. Of course, needing more and more product to do so as the grey comes in more. I have went to layering permanent coloring in with shades of brown to try and replicate a non-uniform color. My beard has never been just one color. The last thing I want is for my beard to be so colored, and I've seen this before on guys, that it's so dark and uniform that it looks fake.
❤
As a hairdresser and a certified colorist I can say you explained color theory really really well.
Thank you very much! it’s hard to know where to draw the line on how much info is too much info 😂
@@mattyconradgrooming Quick question What would you apply to seal the color in if you're using a touch up color applied with what looks like an eye lash applier, but it's for touch up. I don't want it to wipe off quick, nor get it on my lady when kissing, etc. Any idea?
Thanks in advance, great video.
I cant use any of the beard colors as they cause me serious irritation that can last for weeks. I finally tried the women’s hair color n a box going with dark blond. Finally no more irritation. It looks more natural as well and i can get these anywhere even when I’m traveling . I have somme grey in my head and beard so i use both areas. Its a game changer. I also get over ten applications with one box . Maybe it doesn’t last quite as long but the most important thing is it looks 100 percent natural. I used Garnier 70 dark natural blonde and leave it on 30-40 mins. But i have brown hair.
Great tip!
Nice video only have a couple questions that doesn’t get mentioned in the video. When is it safe to use a heated brush after coloring my beard. And when to use any beard oil and butter?
Henna Beard Dye is a much safer and natural looking alternative. It takes a little more work, but the outcome is certainly worth the efforts.
Always used Henna Color Lab products. Made my beard very healthy. I use Control GX now and it looks more natural.
Did you have any durability issues with the henna?
Thank you I always did the semi but never combined the two semi and permanent After watching you I'm going to try it you look Great! Thanx 😊
I just used it on the spots that had the most gray,
I've been dying my beard for years. I first bought Just for Men Mustache and Beard and kept the plastic tray and the little brush applicator. Later I switched to Clairol colors medium brown 615 which works good for me. It's inexpensive and on the day I dye my beard it's a nice medium brown and then a few days later it's a little lighter which works good with my hair color. I still use the plastic tray and small brush applicator from Just For Men.
But can you re use the clairol for more than one application?
@@bradhuskers Yes you can. With the tray from Just For Men you can pour as much as you need to from the color and developer and then apply it to your beard. Do only an area or the whole beard and if you have left over close it up and save it for the next weekend. I usually do my beard every two weeks on a Saturday. Look up Clairol 615 they're inexpensive. Also there's a lighter brown and darker brown too if that's your color.
@Valeron5
But my beard is ginger, do they make ginger color?
@@bradhuskers Yes I’ve seen different colors of red. Go look at your grocery store.
Thank you for the video. I have never colored my beard and I'm glad I watched your video before I do it.
Info GOLD! Thanx!
So I'm probably a little different in that I've tried to color my beard grey. Each time its ended up as either a broze mess. Or like now its just blonde...what would you recommend.
I'm an Airbrush artist 🎨 and we learnt this at school when you overlap colours you get a third colour but always start light and work up to darker colours, usually yellow and blue makes green yellow red will make orange and so onn ,and that's another thing no one tells you at shops when asking for advice does it cause rashes or flaky itchy skin or pimples and how do you go about washing you face and does it react with beard oils etc
So I have dark brown hair, my facial hair is like a brown, with reddish/orange tone, with some blonde hair as well. I tend to use the dark brown just for men just to darken my beard up for a fuller look, but tend to see even more of an orangish hue to it. Should I switch to the light brown for the blue control tone?
I have been thinking about this more and may try this myself. Are there any permanent dyes that you recommend?
In your video I learned some interesting things that I did not know about hair at the molecular level. Thanks! I colored my hair and beard for years, making it dark brown. One Summer when I was 115 I just decided to cut off my long hair that I hadn't cut in 15 years and shave my beard off. Now seemingly just in the last 2 years my beard is gone blinding White, a term that I have come up with to describe it is going full Moses. I have not cut my beard in almost a year, not even trimming it for edging it. What's interesting is when I used to color and trim my beard I would get a lot of young guys saying awesome beard man. Now that I look like I'm going to land a sleigh on your roof and hand out presents I get young women complimenting me on my beard more than I do men. It's just kind of funny. I'm grateful that I still have hair on top and that my beard starts just below my eyes and goes all the way to my toes. LOL
At 115 the beard should be white 🤷🏻♂️
Great video!!
Is there a proper way to avoid getting a rash on your skin after coloring? Is there a milder product that is less inflating and irritating?

A little off topic, but do you have a recommendation for cordless hair clippers similar price and quality to Wahl 8148?
Really appreciate your input.
Good video. I switch it up from time to time. Coloring it for a month and then the next month leaving it all gray.
nice video. why does the style craft saber link now go to a gamma trimmer? which is better?
Since I have dark brown hair I usually use J4M that's at least two shades lighter, usually M-35. I find that going lighter gives you a more natural coloring because not all the hairs will be a uniform brown. when all the hairs are the same color it looks unnatural ... at leat to me. I can always tell who colors their beard if their beard hairs are all uniform in color.
Any recommendations for natural beard coloring solution? Just for men has too many chemicals and my skin gets very irritated afterwards.
I dyed my beard last year and I had dark brown hair when I was younger. The result was very dark brown to black all over the beard which really had a very fake look to it as my really hair before developing white hair had a mix of reddish brown to dark brown. What dye would be the best to use on the white hair to make it look more natural. Light brown or medium brown of permanent hair dye?
Thinking about light brown for my top hair.
For my Beard Fuchsia .
Perfect for a 74 y/o.
