I don't know why so many people are downvoting this. You try running across even a handful of thin plywood boards floating on water, the second you put your foot on it, it sinks. That's pretty impressive that he not only had the balance to do it but the speed to do it quick enough.

+jirv25 Because its not, its quite simple if you think about. It mostly depends on your stamina to how far you will go. Wooden blocks naturally float, helping him tippy toe across the water, as well as they are all connected and tightened down to some degree so they don't just sink, helping him even more.

It seems that many people are missing the fact that the boards twist side to side if you step too far to one side making you slip off it... His feet are also trudging because he's stepping in and out of the water. That creates a LOT of resistance and fatigue especially when he's trying to run fast and accurately with correct foot placement. Also, I don't know if you guys have ever came in contact with very wet wood boards (maybe on a deck) but they become very slippery and easy to fall on. It's not an "easy thing to do". People saying they can do it would probably only be able to make it 10 or so boards the max, if even that many.

Suspension bridge in water. Difficult but not quite what we were lead to believe.

  • @thebobhannah
    @thebobhannah Před 9 lety +3

Theoretically, the surface area needed to hold a human above water via surface tension is exponentially higher than the surface area of any human foot.
This means that for a human to "walk on water" he must move with such an efficiency and speed to compensate for the displacing fluid.
The boards will significantly aid him by:
    #1: Increasing his contact interface.
The area of the board is greater than that of his foot. The board will work much like a propeller in that the larger contact interface of water being displaced reduces the acceleration of his fall.
    #2: Increase buoyancy force.
In this case, the buoyant force of the submerged board would give a slight upward buoyancy force. Looking at the boards, they are barely cresting above the water. This tells us that the weight density of each board is similar to that of water. If the boards float without any other forces acting on them this means that their density is slightly less than not of water. Meaning that when the dry portion is submerged, there is a very small upward buoyant force. Again, I stress that this force is very small and could be neglected on its own.
    #3: Suspension
The ropes connecting the boards are being pulled on at least one of the ends (see 0:42 ), forming what is basically a suspension bridge. It would be unreasonable for me to confidently speculate on what a precise range upward forces would be for the bridge, but in this scenario I believe that they would be significant. Not only does the pulling on the ends effect the load that the bridge can bare, the connected system can create drag in the water which would further slow the rate at which the board (and the man stepping on it) drops.
All things considered, I do not believe that this act is easy by any stretch of the imagination. However, to call it walking/running on water is absurd.

If you're mad that he can't actually run on water without boards, you try what he's doing. That's pretty hard.

Actually its easy if you use the ones that stay up and float. There are so many ordinary people who already do this.

Oh dear, thats' not walking on water, thats walking on boards placed on the water...........
"Walking on water isn’t exactly a commonplace achievement. In fact if you set aside for a moment the testimonies given in three of the Gospels, it can’t be done.
But with the scant aid provided by a few floating boards that are used more for traction than support, Shaolin monk Shi Liliang can do just that.
In fact he can run on water. He’s been developing the skill for 10 years, and recently broke his own distance record, trotting along the surface of a lake for 125 metres.
How is it done? He says "You need to be fast but you should take only small steps."
The Shaolin monks skill in martial arts has become the stuff of legend, and Shi Liliang's feat is just one more exampel of their remarkable physical discipline.
Shi Liliang’s next target is a 150 metre run on water. It’s not just for fun though - he's using the media attention that his amazing feats attract to help him raise money to pay tuition fees for underprivileged students."
Jesus actually walked on water, an so did Peter; they didn't rush , they took their time, they weren't running........................
Matthew 14:22-34New King James Version (NKJV)
    Jesus Walks on the Sea
22 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He sent the multitudes away. 23 And when He had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. 24 But the boat was now in the middle of the sea,[a] tossed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 Now in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. 26 And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered Him and said, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
29 So He said, “Come.” And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. 30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous,[b] he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
