The most important thing is to be respectful, as you stated. Both sides need to be respectful, it doesn't work one way and people seem to forget that. You see it an awful lot in the furry community where people ask for respect for being a furry but then go overboard when people don't respect them. The person who doesn't agree with furries needs to be civil with them and the furries need to be civil with the other opinion. I picked furries because it's what I know but the same goes for any group of people different to the norm.
i actually went into this video with a weird picture of them in mind, but the way anthony presented them rlly taught me that theyre not so weird after all and who am I to judge, If that brings them joy thats all that matters

I was an otherkin as a child, but as I got older I had to force myself out of it because it made people around me uncomfortable. Even five years after leaving that behind, I still feel like I'm not being my true self. I still feel like I don't full relate with the human experience.
I know what it's like to have to hide who you are just because others don't understand. I still am stuck in that sometimes, but I at least have a few friends with whom I can be completely open with about it. Don't give up on it completely, just let it out when you can ^.=.^
