  • Hey everyone! I got a few requests for this one, and it just so happened that I needed to do it this weekend. Plenty more coming your way, with daylight savings I barely have any time to film, but I'm working on it!

    Following your excellent video I did a compression test this morning on a 1.6L. Very helpful. And the job took under an hour. I believe that the relay you removed, on the passenger side of the engines, in order to de-power the fuel pump, is the main relay for the engine. That worked. Compression was fine (average 188 plus or minus 3 PSI), however, I discovered that the wire-set connector to one of the plugs had not been making full contact. There was a gap, and the charge for the plug had been arcing across the gap, The wire set was high quality (NGK) and less than a year old, but that connector was degraded. When you have an elusive problem, doing all the basic tests really helps.

    First off thanks for the video and great job! I noticed out all the videos I have watched you are the only one I have seen do this test according to ASE standards. I read in the ASE study materials that you must disable the fuel and ignition system when conducting an engine compression test. I wanted to get a visual on how the test was actually performed and continued to see so called Professionals skip these steps and some just disconnect the fuel connection and also push all the way down on the accelerator to disable the fuel pump and I was baffled as to why the study materials suggested this when it seemed that no one to need to do this, somebody had to have it wrong. Then finally I see you followed the instructions for performing this test, It made me realize I can't trust every CZcams video from so called professionals. Anyway I'm in school still learning and wanted to learn the right way so again thanks a lot for being thorough I'm definitely subscribing.

All cylinders are the same with first pull @60 psi dry max @150 psi and wet max @180 psi. I live in Mass and will be putting it away for winter. In spring i was planing on installing FM turbo kit. I know that I'm going off topic, but is your Miata equip with a LSD? If not, would you ever consider Def swap with the 1.8 Miata's Torsen def? I heard that it is a great upgrade for Boosted Miata especially the 1.6 Miata's. Anyway I think that would be a cool video to do. Keep up the great work.

    Hi there , you should have said to avoid battery drainage we need to use a Battery charger connected
    to the car's battery at all time to avoid this problem , isn't it true ? I did not see any battery charger connected
    to your car's battery !
    If you keep cranking the engine with a battery charger connected to the car's battery , the car's
    battery would be totally drained ! then you have to tow the car man !
    Would you explain please what do you mean by MAX !! ? you already done the first compressions
    and then the wet test with adding oil ! so what that MAX stands for ? Is it the car's Specifications ?

      +Jesse Crane I would love to go to school for mechanical engineering if I could afford it. I'm not in full time school, just taking a class for engine overhaul/rebuilding this semester. I've never built a car engine before and I've always wanted to.

    • @CraneMoto
      @CraneMoto Před 8 lety +1

      +TheCarPassionChannel ,I would suggest you seriously take a look into it. I am a mechanical engineer myself (been out of school for about 10 years now), and there is no better profession for a gear head in my opinion. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders from what I can tell from your videos, and I have faith that you will do well in whatever endeavor you choose. The key is to do something you love, and you will never work a day of your life.
      I am looking forward to your timing belt and water pump video as I plan on doing that soon to my '95. Keep it up!

      Jesse Crane Hopefully I'll get to someday, That's what I've wanted to do pretty much since middle school. Things happen and time starts to slip away and then you go "What happened?? I could have graduated by now!" haha.

    • @CraneMoto
      @CraneMoto Před 8 lety

      +TheCarPassionChannel It is never too late to invest in your education. I personally had issues trying to get through my undergrad because I hated working 40+ hours a week to pay for school and not being able to afford the car parts that I was lusting over. I am sure glad that I finished school though, as now I have a good job and can afford to play with car parts without racking up credit card debt. School tuition has changed in the past ten years now, and college seems to be something that puts people in $100K+ of debt by the time they get out. I am not sure how Cali state schools are for tuition, but usually a state school will provide you the best bang for the buck...and you still get a good degree at the end.
      I am looking forward to your progress on "broke and boosted", as I will probably be using it as a guide for when I go FI on my '95. It would also be great if you could keep us NA8 owners in mind when doing the modifications, as I am unsure what is common between the NA6 and NA8.

      +Carlos Coto I've been running T6 for around 20,000 miles. I'm no oil scientist so I can't tell you any positive or negative effects it might have on the engine, but my car is still running strong and it's over 206,000 miles.

    Does your car burn any oil? Been dealing with high oil consumption for the last two years. My 1.8 nb2 has 180-175-175-180 on the cylinders. no. 2 & 3 both have a pressure loss of 2% & 5% accordingly. No sign of smoke though. Been using 5w-40 castrol for a 1000 miles now with no sign of burning. I'm keeping track on the dipstick on a weekly basis. I'm thinking head gasket because I had overheating events at the track a few years ago before I started taking care of cooling. I'd definitely like to see what's wrong with your car.

      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +yossi126 Does my car burn oil? Did you see the clip at 0:30? Lol. I'm thinking I have a problem with a valve guide/valve on mine. 2-5% is pretty healthy for a leakdown test isn't it? Also check out your PCV, you can get a little oil though that too. Otherwise I would suspect valve stem seals if you haven't replaced them yet.

      Use liquid tortch,and and crank on it.don't worry about breaking the spark plug.there is a broken spark plug extraction tool you should be able to rent if it dose break.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +Boris Mitin Then you have a bad tester, haha. There's a valve in the tester that's supposed to hold the pressure inside the gauge. If you went to test your cylinders for leakage, that's called a "leak down test" and you need different tools. (Air compressor and a leak down tester.)

    Hi I am in the market for a s13 silvia. I have found one with about 210,000kms which is about 130,000 miles. It has a ka24de. Would you reckon the owner let me do a compression test on it if I had a look at it? Also my dad doesn't want me to get a car with other 200,000kms so if anyone with knowledge about these engines please reply to me

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      If the owner will let you compression test it, it's always a good idea because it can help you spot a potential problem that you might not know about otherwise.

    If that motor goes, please please please swap to a 1.8L. You will love it so much more. They are miles better to boost

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +xampx2k7 It's a solid possibility. But first, show me a 1.8L with a better torque curve than mine! Over 200lb-ft of torque from 3450 to 6600RPM :) Not saying the 1.6L is better, because I know it's not. Just saying a properly set up 1.6L is better than a poorly set up 1.8L!

    • @xampx2k7
      @xampx2k7 Před 8 lety

      +TheCarPassionChannel Okay, Here's one :) www.miataturbo.net/dynos-timesheets-21/99-miata-8psi-garrett-gt2554r-223whp-247wtq-61388/ It's a GT2554R on pump gas. I agree about the properly setup bit, but an equally setup 1.6L vs. 1.8L and the 1.8L will be superior in every way imaginable except maybe fuel consumption. I got my 1.8L motor last week with 73K for $899 shipped so it's not too expensive either. Just give it some thought, it would make a couple hella good videos.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      xampx2k7 Read the replies, that's not a credible dyno plot.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      xampx2k7 Also, no way he's making 247wtq @ 3300RPM @ 8psi. Show my a DynoJet result and I'll be a believer.

    • @xampx2k7
      @xampx2k7 Před 8 lety

      TheCarPassionChannel Eh it's a weird plot no doubt, but I've seen them like that before. Our chassis Dyno at work does something similar. Anyways, give it some consideration because torque curve aside you can make more power, with much better spool-up and less chance to blow motors with a 1.8L. By the way, I actually got my 91' Miata partly because of your videos. When I get my build thread up I'll shoot you a link if you're interested.
