How to diagnose engine oil consumption. Compression and leak-down test | Redline Update #6

  • Our 1969 Chevrolet Camaro is consuming oil. Lots of it. Davin runs through a series of tests to identify the problem in the 396. Dry and wet compression tests show that the oil is coming up through the rings, but the leak-down test on the big block drives that conclusion home.

Three years later and this video is the gift that keeps on giving. What an excellent presentation. Thank you!

Ok I'm just baffled and annoyed that someone would dislike this guys videos!! He is very much the same kind of guy that taught me all the knowledge I have and I very much enjoy these tutorials. People pay tuition to learn far less than Davin can teach you in minutes.

I have become addicted to redline rebuild videos Maybe more so than watching breaking bad. I think the first clue of my Addiction was when I reschedule a quarter end results staff meeting to watch the Buick nailhead update video number 4

Thank you for taking the time to really explain what you are testing and why. Seeing the process as a whole really helps me know how to approach my own engine issue diagnosis.

Genius! Thanks a million for making the walkthrough. It’s makes so much easier because I have a 442 and had no clue how to diagnose the issue.

When doing a leakage test I've always just balanced that particular cylinder on TDC so you don't have to worry about the engine swinging around and valves opening on you. Start off with #1 top dead and work your way through the firing order. Can use something long and thin like a welding rod or a long screwdriver through the plug hole to feel when the piston stops. 👍

Bought an 1978 GMC 3/4 ton pick up big block454 at very low price with all plugs fouling. Did compression tests all good enough. Intake manifold looked wet, so cleaned, tanked and then magna fluxed. Filings showed crack running from side to side right under the carb intake. It was sucking oil up through crank case. Installed new intake manifold and no more fouling. I used and abused the truck for years and sold it to a friend and still running strong with no fouling. Workhorse gust gas hog averaged 12.5 mpg.

That’s some of the most educational engine diagnostics I’ve seen. Mind you I can turn the wrench but don’t know why. Kind of a lego piece rebuilder if you will. Learning the why is fascinating. Thanks!

My diagnoses is, stuck oil control ring on cylinder 3 for sure, and sticky oil ring on the rest, from short runs and lack of oil changes. The oil looked nasty when it was drained. It will be interesting to see, when you get it apart, what the true problem is. Great video!
