Actually the semla dates back to the 1700s in sweden, but then it was served differently placed in a bowl of hot milk called hetvägg (hot wall :D). It's said that the swedish king Adolf Fredrik died from eating too many semlor back in 1772

Mattias Ljungberg (the owner in the video) is taking about the current type of semla which is around 100 years old. The hetvägg semla from the 1700s wasn´t like the semla of today, there was no almond paste and the bun was really dry - so it had to be wettened by warm milk, hence the name hetvägg (hot wall).

Back in the 60s,70s and early 80s we had lots of decent cakes in the UK. Then we got Supermarkets followed by Greegs. All the nice cakes disappeared with the independant and small manufacturers of cakes, The variety was then restricted by maintaining cost for profit. Can still see the Rum Babas in my head from when i was a kid at Taylors cake shop. Closest ive seen since was in Harrods food hall.

Semla has been around a little bit longer than a 100 years. Swedish king Adolf Fredrik loved Semla, so much that he had a stroke after eating too much "Semlor" year 1771. Well there are probably other reasons for the stroke but that is the story at least.

Hetvägg, specifically. Semla served in warm milk. He supposedly ate a large amount of them, as it was his favorite, following a meal of meat and turnips, sauerkraut, lobster, kaviar, kippers and champagne.
After the king's death, count Johan Gabriel Oxenstierna wrote that hetvägg should be banned for regicide.

That being said as a kid, growing up in the town of Mora, I often ate semla as a hetvägg (translates to "hot wall"), but later on I didn't like it as much, since the hot milk just turns the whole pastry into a soggy mess, more or less... Excellent. To eat Semla, or fastlagsbulle the propper way. First take the "lid" of the semla, and dip it into the cream. Then eat it. You should be levt with the lower part filled with cream and other sweet stuff almond paste etc. Now take a bite, and remember to dipp your nose into the cream, filling both nostrils with cream. Also if you are a man with a beard or mustache, it should be full of cream to, this is how its meant to be eaten, not like a stuck-up with a spoon. This way you will walk around all day smelling only sour cream. If you don't, you did not eat it correcly, repeate the process with another semla.
Jokes aside, i am Swedish, and i love semla, eller fastlagsbulle som det också är känt som.

The letter ö doesn't sound anything like the letter o without the dots. JUST SO PEOPLE KNOW... The sound is maybe more like a "uh". Tuh-se.

The camera man filmed you wiping the bun on your nose - for you to pretend it was when you were eating it? How weird.
