Diver fights off great white shark narrowly escaping with ripped flipper

- A brave fisherman fought off a great white shark as the beast lunged at him multiple times during an intense nine-minute-long stand-off (NOTE: The video has been edited down).
While diving off the coast of Perth, Australia, on September 7, Joe Petrovich and some friends were spearfishing but he almost ended up as the prey.
Joe had strayed about 300 metres away from the boat, trying to hunt down a school of pink snapper before a four-and-a-half-metre long shark weighing approximately 400kg appeared.
Moments after the video begins, the shark checks and tilts its head to assess Joe’s defences.
On the fourth circle, the shark leant in further and eventually launched at Joe, who was only able to parry the potentially fatal attack with his gun as the shark’s bite narrowly missed under his right arm.
The shark retreated before almost instantly lunging again but for Joe’s legs, this time taking a chunk out of his left swimming fin as the footage shows a great deal of commotion and struggle.
Joe began his escape back to the boat as the shark continued to circle threatening attacks with each pass.
Eventually, Joe is able to the shark a taste of the pointed spear tip which gives the message to the shark that Joe is also a threat which slowly defuses the encounter.
The shark slowly backs off and Joe successfully makes it back to the safety of the vessel.

His calmness under terrifying circumstances saved his life. He was in control the whole time
He was not in control
Most frightening is every time the shark dips out of sight since it could possibly be the start of a vertical assault
Yeah the fact that it didn't Rocket Up From Below proves it was a little bit confused and just going for an exploratory bite, if that thing really wanted you nothing would stop it
At 35mph
Great Whites attack from below, this did not seem like anything but exploratory as the other comment said.
@@BURGAWMMA Definitely a slightly irritated shark. If he truly wanted lunch i think that might have looked slightly more alarming.
@@JahRasta01 I think the dude would have got munched if he sat there and took it but the shark wasn't treating him like a prey item more or less a inanimate objects that might be edible
If you’re going to go spear fishing, a notoriously dangerous sport, then this has got to be one of the best examples of how to survive an interested shark
The camoflauge of the GW skin to the ocean is just terrifying and impressive plus they don't have to be far away to hide so easily.
This made me so desperate! And the diver was so smart. Never just swimming away, always keeping his eyes on the shark and not panicking! Hats off to him, I would have freaked out.
The diver held his nerve really well. If that was me I would have been so terrified I would have misjudged the spear and gotten bitten.
The most important thing is to keep your eye on the shark. As long as you are watching it then you've got a better chance of survival as they like to sneak up on you. Most shark attack victims never see the shark that attacked them and this is the way sharks like it. If he had tried to swim away the shark would have most likely attacked him.
The diver was too conservative. The shark was trying to decide whether or not to attack...he was thinking about it quite seriously. The diver should have aggressively tried to stick his spear point in the gills. This would have convinced the shark the risk was too high. That would backfire against a bull shark but against a white, it was the smarter choice. You can easily see the point in this video where the shark decides that he is leaning towards an attack. The diver should have never let it get to that point.
@@bobbybearing1767 ....the diver did misjudge and nearly lost an arm. he waited until the shark was already coming for a test bite to get aggressive with the spear. by that time he didn't have a good target. Its a lot easier to stick them in the side then when they are already coming at you.
If he was smart he wouldn't be in the water in the first place....
This is one of the best shark videos I've ever seen. Amazing footage!
The man did really well in maintaining sight and a defensive attitude. 300 m from the boat in open water? Respect! If he had panicked, Whitey would have gone for it. I encountered a great white one day while scuba diving off San Clemente, CA. We were able to keep eyes on the whole time, while slowly(!) kicking back to the boat, which was close by. The other divers said we should be honored by the encounter - I told them what they could do with the honor. Being sized up for lunch really sucks 😕! No more dives that day 😂
If he just poked his head out of the water and screamed at the ship to come pick him up it would've been 10 times better. He definitely panicked. He was swimming frantically to the boat. The only thing that was stopping him from swimming faster was that he was missing one fin. Just keeping the shark on your eyes is not going to stop a 4 meter apex predator from attacking you. Neither will the speargun. The way he poked the shark with the speargun was what provoked the attack and why it tried to bite the diver. It was pretty unnecessary and it probably just made the shark mad and that's why he started following him all the way to the boat. He can be happy it wasn't like a bull shark because he definitely wouldn't get away without being attacked after provoking it with the speargun. You can swim slowly to the boat just like you said. The crew might not hear you scream (which I mean they should because it's literally their job to pick you up if something goes wrong) so you need to swim to the boat so swimming very very slowly while keeping the shark on your eyes might be just fine but if the guy didn't poke the shark with the spear and just stayed in one place without panicking the shark would simply lose interest and just swim away because it could sense it's not afraid of him and he would realize it's nothing to eat. This just made the shark think that it might actually be something to eat because it swims away like prey does. He's lucky great whites are pretty tolerant and they don't attack even if you do quite a lot of mistakes. You can see so many videos where even kids swim and splash around like crazy and there's a big great white swimming next to them and it doesn't do anything.

@@xtherealest you and I must’ve watched a different video. That shark was hungry and aggressive for food. It tried to take a nibble on that guy and he was smart to fend it off. He didn’t have the luxury of removing his regulator and yelling over to the boat. He had to keep an eye on that shark the whole time. I’ve been in flight or fight situations before and it’s very difficult to control your breathing and your reactions. He did a fine job.

Few people in their lifetimes will ever have so terrifying an encounter as this one.
Few people are swimming with dead fish attached to them as well.
@@justin57153 point
Point is dead fish belong out of the water, not attached to your waste.
...and survive it!
I had something similar when I left a strip club in Las Vegas.
A very large, muscular, drunk guy, with cornrows, who was thrown out for fighting, about 30 minutes earlier, decided I was his next victim, when my friend decided to leave.
I just kept him at a distance, slowly backing toward the front door, until I saw the bouncers, go back inside, and close the doors..... ugg...
Then i slowly started toward the street.
Lucky my friend pulled up with the window open, and I just ran, and dove, into the back window, and he sped away.
Watching this video, reminded me of that event.... so many years ago.
I still have a small scar on my jaw-line from the 'skull with a helmet' ring he had on.
The shark just wanted his fish but the diver wasn't going to give them up without a fight. What a legend.
You and I have no idea what the shark truely wanted... we can educationally guess all day but he could of been curious or a mentally ill shark or wanted the fish! but knowing exactly what nah I doubt it was the fish he wanted. They most likely brought him there with the blood but his curiosity probably changed key word probably
That was one of the most dangerous 1 on 1 encounters with a great white I've seen aside from someone actually being attacked wow
It's quite intense isn't it? Lucky guy!
@@DeepBlueDiscovery I guess you were the lucky guy because if that shark had had the intension to go at you, your speargun wouldn't have made a difference. I am glad you didn't use it on him or her. That shark was just curious.
@@ugotlj4133 yes, maybe a deadly test bite but these come from curiosity. still you are right in a way. good he suevived.
This is horrifying. I was wondering...would the better thing have been to toss out the fish to let him have it, or is that just going to get his hunger reflexes going and make him more likely to attack you?
He was right by the boat. It looks intentional to me
Never ever keep speared fish close to your body ( 1:17 ); likely the shark was going after that meal and the guy was simply in the way. Either leave the fish tied to your gun’s line by the float or have the boat fetch your catch, lessens the chance of a close encounter. Having said that, hat’s off to the guy; incredible presence of mind.
No, it was interested in him. You may know tropical sharks well, but Whites are another thing all together. If it was interested in an easy feed (like most tropical sharks would be), it would have pissed off after he dropped the fish. Whites in California subsist off of mammals primarily. They're not "confused" or interested in fish. He was interested in predating the guy and had he not put up a staunch "you can have me, but you'll have to pay" vibe.... He would have certainly been killed. Not all whites will consume a human body afterwards (maybe we taste bad), but we are definitely in the same class as their usual prey. This is a stark difference than say bulls, tigers, etc. who do eat fish primarily.
@@ianseibert8410 Even if that were the case, it does not help one bit having dying/dead fish hanging from your body, especially if you’re prone to running into large predators.
I think both of you are right. My friend told me he was diving with a handful of friends years ago somewhere in Southern California and he reluctantly got stuck with carrying the bag. He kept it quite some yards back I don’t remember exact amount he told me but he said something hit it like a freight train and started dragging him Like a rag doll with it. Most likely a great white or large mako. He was able to unhook and release it. He never saw what it was the visibility wasn’t the best. Scary shit.
Amazing video. His ability to stay calm and not panic undoubtedly saved his life. Remember, fight or flee and fleeing was not an option.
When you panic you lose 85% of your ability to make good decisions whether you're swimming with a great white or get caught in a riptide 85% of your ability to make good decisions go on.
This guy was proactive about his survival and did save his own life! 👍🏽
Imagine all other videos that may have been taken that the world isn’t able to see.
True, a guy that witnessed Simon Nellist's death told that there was another, much more graphic video - shot from another angle, with the shark popping out of the water with Simon in its jaws, still alive... He said the guy either deleted the video out of respect for the family or the police seized it but it didn't make it to the internet. I'm wondering if we will ever see a different video of Cameron Robbins...
Lol with a spear gun😅 Everybody could do that, this spear could kill the shark easily
Thanks Deep Blue 👍

I must say you have balls of steel to go face to face with JAWS like this ! I think the Great White, along with some other sharks as well, are very Territorial ! And possibly this one wanted you MORE out of his Sea Domain Usual Haunt Area than to feed on you. At least in my opinion. Thanks for the upload !
yeh, the guy in the video handled this incredibly well imo. Thanks for watching.
Has to be the best shark video out there, dude handled that perfectly
That split second transitioning onto the boat probably seemed like an infinite amount of time . Way to keep them in sight and composed !
The crazy part about this was that the shark wasn't even really trying. It seemed pretty relaxed and was more just curious but even a curious Great White is still dangerous. If it really wanted to attack/eat a person it would probably lie in ambush. That's the most creepy part about the ocean. The most dangerous sharks are the ones you can't even see, lying in wait to charge you in a kill zone.
It most likely just found the guy a nuisance and was trying to chase him off. There was one encounter I saw where Sperm Whales were chasing away a wildlife photographer who videotaped them giving birth. The photographer claimed one had its mouth around his feet while he paddled away.
czcams.com/video/fxXkKJJ5eh8/video.html
If there's something to take from that, it's that whales, and possibly sharks, find us a nuisance--like we see pigeons, squirrels and rats. At least they don't poison us, the way we do them.
I've read that its common behavior for predators (eg. bears, sharks, lions, etc.) to cautiously approach unfamiliar animals to size them up (see if a threat or possible prey) instead of rushing in as great whites do when attacking seals (usual prey they know).
@@davewolf6256 no. He wanted to eat

It should be the opposite actually lol
This spearfisher deserves a lot of credit for not shooting that shark! They could have easily done that and cut their line and the shark would have left immediately but they didn't! Absolutely amazing Stuart of the deep blue that helps sustain them!
You never shoot a shark. You wouldn’t have time to cut your line. The shark would pull the gun out of your hands and the spear would be an exceptionally ineffective deterrent. If your gun is attached to your person, you’re going for a ride and would likely be drowned. You keep the spear between you and the shark, maintain eye contact, stand your ground and get close to your dive partner. Get to the boat but don’t panic and swim toward it fast or if you’re shore diving, slowly start swimming toward shore while keeping an eye on the shark and being prepared to defend yourself.
Now thats a shark in counter!!! No click bait. Good shit dude. 👍

The shark is like: "Eyyy!!! Thats my hunting ground".
I’m impressed with the divers self control… not only swimming calmly but that he didn’t fire his gun! After the shark took her “test bite” and continued to investigate, it would have been awfully tempting to pull the trigger and add some force to your defense. Not saying that is wise, just tempting!

All this time the diver was keeping his eye on the shark, I thought:" if there's another shark in play, he might not see that one coming at all". Extremely intense video, can you imagine how the diver experienced this?
I thought I noticed a second shark in the video, but I'm not certain. Is that what you were insinuating? I agree with you there ad thats your only chance. But I will say I was on a tuna fishing trip and by nightfall our boat was surrounded by sharks. The captain ordered the crew to stab them with spears so the won't eat out catch. Dude these spears did absolutely nothing to scare away the sharks. Completely unfazed by it.
