Star Wars: Inside the Imperial Star Destroyer

  • The iconic Imperial-class Star Destroyer first appears in the opening scene of Star Wars in 1977, where the Imperial Star Destroyer Devastator, with Darth Vader on board, chases the CR90 Corvette Tantive IV above Tatooine.
    Manufactured by Kuat Drive Yards, the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer is described as a technological successor of the Venator-class Jedi cruisers used by the naval forces of the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars.
    Ever wanted to see how an Imperial-class Star Destroyer actually works? Here is a deeper dive inside an Imperial Star Destroyer. A technical 3D animation showcasing the power behind a Star Destroyer.
    But also learn how this Star Wars capital ship works and why it's considered one of the most iconic spaceships in the Star Wars saga.
    They were nonetheless essential in the Imperial doctrine of planetary containment and fast infantry deployment, and the vessel was noted as one of the most resource-intensive ships in the Imperial Navy.

    975 km/hr? That's all?!? Even in space? Man, that thing is SLOOOOW... that's only MACH 0.8 or so, not even close to the speed of sound. Any airliner could keep up with it and any modern fighter could easily run circles around the Star Destroyer speed wise.

    • @Jarl_Thidrandi
      @Jarl_Thidrandi Před 2 lety +10

      This can't be right, unless we're talking about its speed in an atmosphere similar to ours. In space, there is no speed limit for an engine. Mph or Kph is not used as it is not relevant or relative. Instead meters per second are used as a metric, for both velocity and potentiality. The delta V of a craft can be summed up as how much energy is available in the fuel and able to be output through the engine, relative to the mass of the craft and the amount of gravitational effect it is experiencing. The efficiency of these engines is categorized as the ISP, or specific impulse. This is all to say that with what is essentially a fusion reactor powering a set of massive ION engines, your potential relative velocity could be relatively close to light speed, given enough time. The only downside would be maneuverability, since any inertia would need to be cancelled to change direction in space. With how massive these craft are, perhaps a standard operating speed was established to allow for maneuvering in a vacuum. Considering star destroyers are poorly designed for any type of axial acceleration, specifically along the normal/antinormal nodes, and the radial in and out nodes, it would take a lot of time to reposition one of these beasts to change their direction. With all that said, these craft would have an almost limitless amount of delta V at their disposal, and could basically go whatever speed they wanted to within the laws of physics.

    • @worldstateproductions8787
      @worldstateproductions8787 Před 2 lety +4

      Vacuum doesn't have anything to do with weight. Mass would often be the more relevant term, but if you take what's on screen for fact, ships almost never orbit in Star Wars, so what they're really doing is hovering at an extremely high altitude. Gravity at these heights is only slightly less than on the surface, so especially in those cases the weight in that planet's gravity would be relevant.

    Kinda funny to me how I used to get into "discussions" with fellow nerds about who would win in a fight between the Star Wars IDS 1 or 2 vs Star Trek's USS Enterprise D. People would go back and forth about shields, teleportation tech, the force, etc. etc. yet nobody ever pointed out how a single SD had a crew of almost 40,000 where the Enterprise had around 1,000. Once I brought that up the Star Trek people kinda thought hard for a few minutes and could only see the Enterprise winning if it were to surprise a SD with an attack of teleporting a bunch of torpedoes in critical areas. Beyond that the SD turbo lasers, dozens of fighters, deflectors, and all the other insane weapons available would cut through the Enterprise like wet paper. I love both universes so I'm not partial or biased against or for either one, but still....have an ISD go up against Enterprise D is like a navy aircraft carrier going up against light frigate. The frigate might be able to do some damage, but it's going to get totally blown away in the process.

    well now we know just how many people die when one of these things blows up! for those of us seeing it in a theatre in 1977 the amazing design of a giant triangle that seems to never end, against a backdrop of horizons and spheres was just gob-smacking! not since "2001"A Space Odyssey" (of which many of the Spfx crew were involved in Star Wars), had design and scope become such an important part of the viewing experience. cinematic science fiction had finally (once again) achieved AWE - inspiring. many younger audiences today can't quite comprehend that (and why should they?)..."awe inspiring" has been undermined by its consistent/constant appearance... it's lost its ability to do what it set out to achieve, by sheer volume. a planet explodes? ho-hum! gargantuan space battles? seen it! only good character development and canny direction can make us feel anything like excitement for these things now. if nothing feels at genuine stake then it's like weekly fireworks display... it quickly loses currency.

    The flaw of the ISD isnt its lack of shielding, its the lack of anti fighter weapons that the venator had. The ISD is full of hull and armour to the point where it is very difficult to take one down even without shields. In episode 6, the lack of shields allowed a fighter to crash into the bridge which wouldnt normally be possible with shields, and the lack of control let the super star destroyer fall in death star gravity from being too close.

      The Shields most of the time only reflect explosions or energy weapons but they allow fighters or ships through that's why actual bullets can pierce them

    The problem with the Star Destroyers in the movies is 90% the gunners are on coffee break.

    Very cool! It would be nice to see a more detailed interior of the CNC, engineering etc. I knew they are big but... WOW! 9000+ Storm troopers. That's almost a Roman Legion. 👍🤘😁🖖

    Every time I see one of these get damaged or go down in a movie I can't even imagine what type of discipline the captains of these ships faced

      Glad you enjoyed it! I couldn't find any animation on CZcams, so I decided to create one myself.

    The most vulnerable part of the SD is the two Shield Generators...Yep. Located right up on top and open to attack from multiple angles. I wonder if Vader choked out the chief designer for putting those there...

    This is awesome and I appreciate it greatly! Forget nay sayers, I was a Star Wars fan before the term “canon” was invented.
