      Not the best line! Too early turn in into parabolica ; a choppy line, not the smoothest but he had the guts to pull it off. He had guts and in those machines that is what counted. Fast, yes. Finesse, no. Pushed out of F1 before his time... who knows why, but the system doesn't seem to like those who won't play the game.

      +Dylan Cotton Exactly what you say, and the EU has a lot of strict emissions rules for car manufacturers to adhere to. Since most of the world's supercars and hypercars are built within EU borders they have no choice but to build more efficient cars. Which has given us the most powerful cars in history, so yeah sound may be a bit less exotic, but the power has only gotten more and more extreme!

It's unassisted in the fact there's no DRS and no battery modes giving you performance, just the natural power of the engine. You take TC off, I'm sure with some clever engineering these cars could go just as fast if not faster

    For me the most impressive thing about this lap is the exit from Ascari. He kept his foot *completely* flat through the exit. I know in today’s f1 cars that’s not as impressive, but back then, especially with the reduced downforce they ran at Monza, it must have been extremely difficult and required a lot of bravery.

      There was a video up on CZcams years ago which showed the sector times compared to the fastest at the time (taken down now sadly). I think he gained 3 tenths in the final sector, and I think most of that was because how brilliantly he took the Ascari chicane

      That is correct. From 2001 until 2004 the cars got faster and faster thanks to technology like traction control. After 2004 most of it got banned.
      Nowadays F1 cars are getting faster by the year too, mainly thanks to more horsepower, but they look and sound like shit.

      It´s the downforce. Monza is a track that you benifit from not having that much of down force. The down force of the modern cars is better, therefore not as fast at Monza.

    I wonder how much quicker he would have been on full slicks instead of the silly grooved tyres the FIA made teams run. If I remember rightly this was the wonderful BMW V10 engine that revved to 20,000 rpm and they had qualifying engines, which only just lasted for the qualifying. The race engine was fitted in overnight for the race next day. Wonderful decedent racing. Montoya was great and did not take any crap especially from Mr Schumacher. Perhaps not the best driver but very good and a joy to watch. He took a completely new line at Monaco which I believe he won.

      At least the drivers drive the cars now compared to the computerized shit they drove 10 years ago. Traction control, launch control, computer controlled engine braking. Less driver skill was required back then. Halfway through a corner they could just floor the pedal. And at the starts they just had to hang on and let the car sort it out.

    Montoya's temperament was his biggest enemy. It made him make mistakes a lot and alienated him in the F1 world. But when it was his day, boy was he a joy to watch or what ?!?

    the sound of my teens. those were the days. i started watching f1 in 1999. this sound is what made me fell in love with the sport.
