    That indentation is for a pan mounted drain screen. Some of these machines had stand alone coolant tanks that sat right below that hole.

    After searching and about two years I finally picked up a Clausing 12×48 lathe and it's really smooth. I watched about every video on CZcams to learn how to run it. Thanks for sharing your videos!

    I've had a couple of these a couple 5914's and my current 6913 14x48" I wasn't aware that you could run the carriage like that for tapers ether! I wish they would have had a 1-3/8" bore on these machines, I bet they would have been as popular as the SB10L. Nice machines for the money. Stout! I'm having withdraws right now from a move and my new shop has yet to have power run to it so seeing these machines run in the meantime is always nice.

    Ray, that depression in the chip tray is for installing a coolant tank and pump. There would be a strainer to keep chips out of the tank.

      Ray's Garage Yep, the 6900 series is a nice lathe. Just like mine only bigger. Mine came with a 2hp single phase Dayton motor. More power than I’ll even need. The Clausing lathes are good lathes. If you were not aware, Clausing also still has many of the parts for their old lathes. Plus they have a guy in the tech department that knows his sh*t. The parts are not cheap but I have bought a few parts from them I could not find elsewhere. Good to see you making vids again.

    The indent on the chip tray is for a knockout for a coolant drain if it came with that option. Or you could add one yourself. The base for my South Bend has that option and I think I may add it. More tools Ray, that's a good thing my friend.

    I recently bought this exact lathe and absolutely love it. I don’t have a manual for it and I am wondering, is there supposed to be an oil bath inside the headstock? That’s what would make the most sense but I wanted to make sure before I went any further.

    • @RaysGarage
      @RaysGarage  Před 2 lety

      Hi Josh, I did try running with an oil bath but it all leaked out the spindle bearing so I just keep the small oil cups filled with spindle oil and have never had a problem. I did find the original owners manual on line and see if I can locate it and shoot you the link.

      @@RaysGarage dont be fooled the wood lathe is in pieces (10 years or so) the Lorch watchmakers is an ornament, the Taig also, the Chinese bench top was a gift and only serves to stop the piles of junk behind it falling on the floor. That just leaves the Colchester and the Myford, the latter is only used for imp thread cutting, rare! So really you could say its just the one, but it sounds impressive i have so many and is in fact true but misleading.

Gary the sales brochure shows your model to be a 3/4 hp single phase 36" centers, Ray's should be 1hp. A while ago I stumbled across a Clausing sales brochure online that has many of the details on the 4900 series.
