Shawn you’re doing it the right way. As a parent of two adult kids and now a grandson I always had guns out and around my kids much in the way you do. My kids at 9 both took there first deer. At 10 they both started shooting USPSA matches with me. My daughter, who is now a proud mother, rocked a Glock 19. Her carry gun is a G43 and carry’s it religiously. My son stole my 1911 I built for competition and shot it in matches. He still has it to this day. When guns are something kept secretive from kids their curiosity is what gets many killed. My kids knew from very early ages what they were about. They learned to respect them. Keep doing what you’re doing.

My daughter grew up with firearms (retired law enforcement 30 years) shes 34 years old, and shown grown men how to put a Remington 870 barrel back on to the lower. Shes known for many years, finger off the trigger, and not to muzzle anything you do not want dead, or destroyed. She know the difference between a weapon and a tool.
Start training your children as soon as they start asking questions about firearms. My daughter carries a G43, and a blade. She played attention to her daddy.

Not even about his politics so much as his background and history he has many interesting stories to tell, and I'd genuinely like to just learn more about him. Your one of the few honest interviewers that might let him tell his story without spinning it. My uncle was in WWII and switched to the USAF was an in country Vietnam pilot survival instructor. All the males in my family on both my American and Mexican side served. I took a different path but learned so much from my father and uncles. I was surprised how many soldiers and police carry a crucifix or Rosary. I became a deputy for 35 years and my EDC is a crucifix and a prayer, a knife in my left pocket, an auto or flip open by bench made. Hinged cuffs when in plain cloths because there is a reason. Phone, of course. I put my tourniquet on my left ankle because when you are in great pain the body will pull up into a fetal position naturally to protect other organs. Which makes it easier to grab the tourniquet from your ankle.
And I just switched from a Glock 43XMOS with a holosun optic and raised fix sights and three 15 rd shield mags to the Sig P365 X with raised sights and 17round mag. I’m a Glock guy but my wife got me the Sig for Christmas and I’m extremely pleased with it. It’s a tiny bit bigger than my 43X but it is comfortable on my waist. I strongly suggest you rent one and try it out. I have been teaching CCW since Missouri past it and always told my students to by a Glock for all the great reasons they built into it. But the P365 with adjustable optics including NV capability puts it over the top for me

Amazing how many guys carry their military experience into civilian life. I remember running my first two sons 1967 and 1972 with a military sort of attitude. By the time they were each 13 they could each hold their own with 1911's, AK's and AR's.
Time passed... but I didn't prepare them well enough to reject peer pressure and drugs and alcohol. Both brilliant academically and athletically in Catholic schools but both fell victims to alcohol and drugs. They are okay now... most of the time.
Didn't make the same mistake with my second set of sons 1987, 1990 and 1992. A lawyer, a businessman and a commercial pilot.
There is a lot more than bad guys that you have to protect your family from.
By the way: There are some really good books out there on fathering. Wish I had read them in 1966.

I remember my Dad checking out M1 Garands from his submarine's armory when I was in 6th grade, 12 years old. He also had access to unlimited bandoliers of FMJ ammo. We'd go to the range and shoot maybe 400 rounds of 30-06 between my brother, me and Dad. That same year, his crew started a gun club and were able to order most manufacturers of guns, Winchester, Remington, Ithaca, etc.. When I asked if I could buy a .22, a shotgun and a deer rifle, he OK'd it as long as I paid for half. I had some money via lawn mowing/baby sitting in the neighborhood and ended up with an Ithaca model 37 12 gauge, a Remington model 700 ADL 30-06 and a semi auto Marlin .22. This was in 1971. That was my introduction to firearms.

Great nod to the Knights Templar, Rosary, took me deep with the Trigger. Awesome sit and chat with a Great Warrior, especially on the use of the blade. Took a few sessions from Frank Cucci in Norfolk back in the 90's, while I was on tdy, on strikes (Kali, Escrima) and blew me away with realism in these kinds of situations. it's not what you would think, but when you're in, realize the effectiveness, on bleeding a guy out. Also had a chance to see different approaches on footwork (Angel Cabales-derivatives), hand checking, that South East Asian take, nasty. Some of those guys, in close, wicked. Definetly just another skill set/tools, that covers the ranges/DTE, very in close and personal. Thanks Shawn, love the info.

I’ve been around firearms since I can remember.. when the house I was raised in was being remodeled, my bed was moved into a spare room. The gun rack was on the wall filled with the main hunting guns. From
.22 to 30-06. I was around 8 yrs old. I don’t remember them teaching me about them, but Inalways just seemed to know not to mess around with them. I would take the 30-06 down and look through the scoop out the window sometimes, but I remember that even was something I was cautious about. To this day the golden rules of firearms are muscle memory and not even a conscious thought to follow, they are just an automatic follow.

    • @Mounty621
      @Mounty621 Před 4 měsíci

@@TheAshlec It's a long story, but I'll gladly share it if it will save a child and keep a parent from utter sadness, as I do in my civilian firearms training classes. Basically, I tried to desensitize him to the mystique of guns by letting him be around my firearms while cleaning and maintaining them since he could walk. As he got older, I repeated firearms safety to him constantly when he was around my firearms. I kept my firearms in a safe when not in use, except for my EDC pistol, which I always kept on me or with reach of me, but out of reach from my toddler kids. When he was 5, I took him with me on a shooting trip with some church youth. I let him shoot some of my firearms, with my assistance, shooting at water filled bottles to show what real destruction firearms can cause.
After getting home, he was in the garage with me while I cleaned the firearms we shot on the trip. I cleaned and loaded my EDC pistol, a Sig Sauer P229 loaded with 147 gr. Remington Golden Saber ammunition, and put it in my holster, storing it in the cabinet above my work bench while I cleaned the other firearms. He helped me carry my gear out to my undercover car, but dropped what he was carrying at my feet as I was putting things back in the storage box I had built in my car. Unbeknownst to me, he ran back in the garage, climbed up on my work bench, and took my EDC pistol out of the cabinet. He then pulled the pistol out of the holster, cocked the hammer, and pulled the trigger.
He shot through his upper thigh, in and out. The bullet continued through the edge of the chair in which he was seated and into his calf and out the other side, luckily missing his bones and arteries. As I ran back into the garage to see what I thought would be my dying son, he looked at me and said, "Daddy, guns should be unloaded." That is what I taught him about the condition firearms should be in while cleaning, emphasizing that to him about double checking prior to any weapon manipulations.
I don't leave firearms lying around for children to access, which is why I didn't lose my children, my career, or go to prison for negligent storage of firearms. If you aren't going to lock up your firearms, don't have any ammunition accessible to unintended persons, especially children. There is no amount of exposure you can give to a small child to take away the allure of playing with firearms. I should have strapped my EDC pistol back to my body, but screwed up that day. Luckily, all I have is the scars on his leg to remind me of my stupidity every time we work out together.

Let them handle unloaded weapons. Supervised. My babies were like 5-6 when I started showing them how firearms operate. Gun Safety. Clearing a loaded weapon. Pistols, shotgun and AR. They saw them almost daily coming and going from work. They got to be as interesting as a lamp post to them so there was no fascination. Watch their friends though. Mine are in college now rocking their own G19's.

I’ve had this mindset prior to becoming a dad but now it feels so much heavier, there’s a slight blanket of fear that looms over if anyone knows what I mean? Maybe just a father fearing what can happen to your baby? but then the defense kicks in and says no way and I start thinking about action plans.

I raised three kids. I have owned and used guns since I was a kid. You must expose your kids to shooting a real gun as young as possible. Kids - and/or their friends - will find your guns regardless of how well you think you hid them. If all they ever know is a toy where pulling the trigger has no consequence, they will treat a real gun like a toy. If they, like my kids, shoot (while dad is also holding the gun) real guns, they understand the power and consequence of pulling that trigger.
