The Life of Helga Hufflepuff (+WHY She Was the Most Important Founder) - Harry Potter Explained

- Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we're discussing the Hogwarts Founders. Let’s get in to it.
If you think about the greatest founder of Hogwarts, who comes to mind?
If you value overall magical abilities, you might be tempted to choose Salazar Slytherin. Afterall, he created a secret, enchanted chamber right under the noses of the 3 other, original teachers at the school… and none of them ever found out.
But if you are fascinated by the legacy of wizards who triumphed over dark sorcerers, you’d likely suggest Godric Gryffindor. The students who enrolled in his house were among the strongest wizards in all of Europe. And in the 20th century, Gryffindors students were responsible for defeating not just Grindelwald, but also the far more terrifying dark wizard, Tom Riddle.
I’d imagine, even a few of you, would throw out Rowena Ravenclaw as your choice. Unlike the other founders, Rowena wasn’t interested in courage or pure-blood… she chose her students based on their intelligence. The greatest wandmaker in the world, the man responsible for giving both Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter the tools they needed to duel, Garrick Ollivander, was actually a graduate of Rowena’s house.
But I’m willing to claim that Helga Hufflepuff, the fourth and last founder of Hogwarts, might actually have been greater than all the rest.
Why?
Well, that’s what we’re going to talk about today when we look at her life and legacy.
Just like the other founders of Hogwarts, Helga Hufflepuff represented a unique part of the British isles.
Godric Gryffindor was born in the West Country of England, Rowena Ravenclaw in a narrow valley within the Scottish Countryside, and Salazar Slytherin in Ireland (although that last part is often contested).
But Helga, just like one of the most unique indigenous creatures in Britain, the green, Welsh dragons, hailed from Wales.
Although the ancient records of her hometown have been lost, we know that Helga was raised far away from the urban trading centers that bordered England, and instead grew up deep within the Welsh countryside, amidst its flowing creeks and low-rolling hills.

I would love to see a video on Merope Gaunt if there isn’t one already. I feel like there’s so much that’s missing. She lived a short depressing life. It’s also interesting how depression and anxiety affected her ability to perform magic.
The layout of Hogwarts is confusing. Is there more than one Whomping Willow? Is the willow that Lily and Severus met under a Whomping Willow? Sometimes Hagrid's home is down a steep hill, sometimes it seems level to some portion of the school. I can't really wrap my head around it. Can you clarify the layout of the school?
After Fantastic Beasts, I could see a series of films about the founders of Hogwarts, that would be something really epic to see in theaters!
Great video it made me wonder though what would happen if Malfoy was in Hufflepuff??? Would have been the same??? Could you make a video on this??? no hard feelings if you can’t though😁
We getting the life of Rawena Ravenclaw next, as far as I see she is the last House founder we don't have a "life of" video yet.
Hufflepuffs weren't weak, they weren't dumb or cowards. They simply had nothing to prove to anyone. No one should have to prove their worth or ability. That was Helgas point. Durmstrang and Beauxbatons didn't seperate their students by qualities. Yet they all were impressive and worked together instead of rivalrys between themselves.
I am a Hufflepuff and I am proud to be a Hufflepuff

Yesss!! I’m a Hufflepuff!!💛🖤
Helga is one of those teachers who see potential in everyone. Best kind of teachers
As a Slytherin, Hufflepuffs are never to be underestimated.
It's important to remember, badgers eat snakes.
They can also get mauled by lions and don't give a f*ck😂😂 and i don't know how ravens should deal with them
Never underestimate a Puff in all honesty

One thing I like about Helga of the four House founders illustrations that she is the only one there who’s smiling and I find that so sweet.
OMG I didn’t notice that 😅.But looking at it, it truly fits her personality so well. She is also my most favorite of the four founders. ❤
I suspect that Helga and badgers have much in common, quiet and patient when left alone, but terrors when provoked beyond endurance.
I agree!! She's good at food magic and magic comes from energy and energy comes from food so I think she holds a vast amount of mana.....
Think Molly Weasely on Steroids. I still remember that Howler...
Badgers are also cousins to weasels, minks, sables, martens, stoats, ferrets, otters, ratels (honey badgers), and wolverines, as many of them are small but they are also fierce.
Hufflepuff is the most underrated house, so glad Newt is a Hufflepuff!
Even though I am a Ravenclaw, This proves that Hufflepuff is a GREAT house!
I'm also a Ravenclaw and agree!
finally someone is valuing Hufflepuff!!
thanks, im a Hufflepuff btw :)
Me too. Also I have always thought Hufflepuff is undervalued. Great argument in Helga’s favour. Indeed I wonder how much of her personality the sorting hat got.
My best friend is a Ravenclaw and I am a Hufflepuff
Although Luna's a Ravenclaw, I always felt maybe she would have fit in to Hufflepuff more due to her kind and non-judgemental personality. She's also always full of positivity and does her upmost to cheer people up. She also joined the DA and fought with the Wizarding community against Voldemort because it was the right thing to do. I'm glad she at least ended up marrying a Hufflepuff in Newt's grandson. Interestingly enough so did Neville, who also could have joined Hufflepuff.
It's because she's so spacey and focused on learning as much as possible. About everything.
If I were a Chad at Hogwarts, Luna is who I'd go after.
Virtue, good heart, honor, courage mmmm good traits they are.
Its because she is a bit of loner
@@aftersexhighfives i think it had more to do with her originality and doing her own thing.
im really glad hufflepuff has gotten more appreciation in recent years. i feel like the HP fandom has grown out of stereotyping the houses so much like they are in the actual stories which is nice. ive always been really proud to be sorted into hufflepuff, even though it sort of suprised me.
*gasp* Voldemort is in hufflepuff?
I thought you were In Slytherin?
Tom I don’t think Trans-housing is allowed
She excelled at Food Charms "Although you might be quick to dismiss.." I absolutely would not! Good, hearty food is vital to fuel the body, mind and spirit.
As someone whom loves to cook (especially for others) There's a magical feeling in making others happy and content with a well prepared meal, and I'm sure it's no less fulfilling when waving a wand to say, spice up bland food or multiply a small quantity of comestibles in order to ensure that everyone gets enough..
Conjuring fresh ingredients out of thin air, fresh spices and herbs. Yeah, Roll that Beautiful Bean Sorcery!
Trust me I can make Food Magic dangerous. It ain’t hard 😭
It’s quite literally why we have different drugs nowadays
Helga and Rowena were much less egotistical and prideful than Godric and Salazar. That's why they were better founders and better people.
I'm a Ravenclaw btw
Wooo Ravenclaw gang!!
I'm here after Hogwarts Legacy. Ravenclaw here.
@@omaridavis8088 Hogwarts Legacy hasn't come out yet. How did you get that time turner?!!
Rowena was very egotistical. Her house literally doesn’t take you if you aren’t intelligent essentially.
@@Gr0ot and the house is pretty known to backstab eachother and sabotage
The only founder that cared about teaching kids and not about creating some sort of social Darwinism experiment bs.
Second that 🙋🏻♀️
I seriously doubt they'd turn away young wizards and just let the future of their community rot because they didn't make the cut of any other founder. I think Helga and her outlook ALLOWED the other houses to act on their preferences because she would take the lot of 'em, no matter.
True, people misjudge Hufflepuff as a dumping grounds for unremarkable young witches and wizards. But the way I see it Hufflepuff does allow students to flourish their talents but also lets them learn and collaborate with their fellow students who can bring their own specialties to the table. Maybe they won't all learn to be exceptionally brave, smart or cunning but they would be better at achieving a lot more by working harmoniously as a group.
I think they could reject students without endanger the future of their community, this is becouse in the founders time homeschooling was the norm (or at least it seems to me that way) and the idea of a school of magic was very innovative. So they could just send them back to their families.
@@adielbarrera9848 Yeah I imagine that's what usually happens even in modern times when Hogwarts students get expelled. Without other options, the kids would have to receive their magical education at home.
@@barbiquearea don't expelled students have their wands snapped? I always assumed that was the case because of Hagrid
@@DanniDunnit It didn't happen to Newt so I assume it might depend on the reason why they were expelled.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson once announced that he was in Hufflepuff. I thought that was pretty cool.
Helena Bohnam as well! 😊
I find that hard to believe honestly ..but still interesting
@@aliciacoble7854 well The Rock sure is the definition of hardworking. Lots of movies in recent years and still enough time to work out to have body this ripped.
@@jonasbrattka2454 Yep. And from what I've heard he is a really nice fella.
@@barbiqueareahe seems very humble as well, which is a key trait of us Huffsters
Helga Hufflepuff is honestly the foundation of Hogwarts. No she doesn't get the infamy of Slytherin or the renown of Gryffindor because she wasn't involved in all the fantastical battles, or the ideals of supremacy. She wasn't judgmental towards of any those traits and instead valued those who would be loyal to those around them, and was willing to give anyone a chance. She was the type who did the hardwork that wasn't pretty, it wouldn't make you famous but without it, you really can't be successful. IMO without Helga Hogwarts fails as a school, lost in the elitism of the other founders who seemed to value everything about their students, except the students as individuals and people themselves.
I would argue all of these traits are important and necessary for magical community to survive and thrive... just depends on the circumstances...
I'm sure the hufflepuffs and ravenclaws appreciated gryffindor's bravery and willingness to fight during the Battle of Hogwarts😅
Taking the sorting hat quiz honestly and thoughtfully as a kid then as someone in their 30's the answers are very different. I would have been in Gryffindor or even Slytherin -(in my naughty teens) - but now firmly Hufflepuff!!!!
I got Gryffindor when i was around 9/10 and i got Gryffindor again now in my early 20s
1-Food magic is fantastic because starvation can kill wizards just as it kills muggles even if they take longer to die from it.
2-The movies and possibly the books make it seem like all the houses have the same number of students but in practice Hufflepuff likely has many more students than the other houses because they accept every good wizard/witch regardless of talent.
Helga's contributions might not have been the most interesting to show in the dangerous conflicts of Fantastic Beasts and Harry Potter but during the moments of peace when the magical world isn't in flames they are the ones which impact the lives of most people bar the crazy inventions from Ravenclaws.
I think the sorting hat balances it out so every house has the same number. I went to a boarding school.
They did that with houses in my school.
I do not know how they chose people for each house.
I did enjoy your overview of Helga. I picture her as setting of the forbidden forest as a sanctuary for magical creatures and a place to dispose of less safe magical creatures rather than killing them. I also picture her setting up the Hogwarts kitchens not only to produce food for students but as a sanctuary for House Elves that had either been dismissal by their masters or where their masters had died.
I pretty sure she dism't make the forbidden forest, it was already there.
@@Popcorn-ch7uy
True but I think she made it a preserve tended by Centaurs. Dangerous creatures are released here and it's a home to all sorts of creatures and plants.
just a thought: during the Deadly Hallow, the most taxing and harshest trial the trio have to endure was the stranded in the woods, which they were injured and on the run. but above all that, the most dangerous thing in that event was the lack of "food". Ron wound cant heal properly because he dont have enough nutrition, Harry caught the most pathetic fish in the world, Hermione use duplication charm to increase the amount of food they had, but it only reduce the nutrition in them, which make it useless. Food Charm is not useless now is it? if only they know more about food charm heh?
This is an excellent point...😅 I never thought about that
Newt is the best example of Hufflepuff House.
What puzzles me is that Helga's name was Helga, if she was Welsh. I'm pretty sure that's a Norse name. A name like Heulwen seems much more likely.
It would’ve made more sense and been more Interesting if she was a Norse-Gael from Dublin where there was a hybrid Norse and Irish culture.
Vikings arrived at the the Brittish Isles in 793 By the time of Helga's birth, they had already been around for a long time. Not that surprising she could've had a Norse name, or been part Norse. Although her philosophy isn't aligned with Norse culture.
She's allowed to have a non welsh name and be born in Wales
As an hufflepuff I adore this 💛 🦡
Helga Hufflepuff’s house should have produced the largest number of powerful witches and wizards throughout the centuries. Full stop.
I've never heard a good reason why this wasn’t the case. This is my video request/suggestion.
Hufflepuff house was portrayed as a dumping ground for unwanted magical children, a concession if a student failed THE goal of being sorted into an exclusionary house. The students (save Cederic Diggory) came off as mediocre, preferring to be with friends in the greenhouse than in the classroom. But that doesn’t fit with two of their major traits: hard-working and patient.
Magic was innate yet can still be developed. That was an aim of the magical schools. Just as with other talents like music, hard work and patience to develop a skill over time ALWAYS outpaces someone who relies on talent alone. Given the house traits, including the sense of community and support, Hufflepuff should have been packed with students excelling at the practical application of magic. Meaning they are better at performing spells and in other disciplines. Modesty aside, that kind of power is apparent to others.
Side note: Slytherin students also grow into power due to determination and ambition. (Except the ones relying on the belief of power by birthright.) A Hufflepuff and a Slytherin will get to the same place but by different means and reasons. I bring this up because a muggle-born or a half-blood with more of a muggle heritage than desired, who are perfect fits for Slytherin would be sorted into Hufflepuff.
Maybe Hufflepuff does produce a large number of powerful witches and wizards. We just don't hear about it because they don't necessarily brag about it
They quite literally DO NOT BRAG. That’s Hufflepuff. They do have the strongest wizards likely.
Yes I think Hufflepuff is the counterpart to Slytherin. And in many ways Ravenclaw is counterpart to Gryffindor.
Ravenclaw and Gryffindor are related to 'talent' and 'promise' and 'youth' and the ideal world.
Hufflepuff and Slytherin are related to reality and adulthood and the material world.
Slytherin understands the reality of social connections and moral ambiguity when it comes to achieving success.
Hugflepuff understands how grit and co operation and humility help you through life's obstacles.
Ravenclaw and Gryffindor is to youth.
Hufflepuff and Slytherin is to maturity.
Helga was an Empath like we now say. ✨✨✨🧙🏼♀️✨✨✨
People always see Hufflepuff as the worst house, which is kind of stupid really. Helga wanted to teach everyone who wanted to learn regardless of anything about them.
Ravenclaw: Clever
Slytherin: Cunning
Gryffindor: Chivalry
Hufflepuff: CHANGE
If Slytherin was Irish that would be delightfully ironic given there aren't any snakes there...
to be fair there arent lions in england either. Only Helga and Rowena had the sense to choose local animals lol.
@@CHLOCHLOLP but your great great great Grand Daddy couldn't speak to Lions could he? It's not about the symbols they chose and more about his famous talents. I mean what's the point of being a parseltongue if there aren't any snakes to talk to and how do you even know you are if none come up to say hello to you like the Python in the zoo did to Harry?
@@bridgeburner909 maybe he discovered the talent when he was in other parts of the british isles? but yea it would still be a pretty lame talent considering the snakes there are still pretty small and weak. definitely would be more useful to people from more tropical climates lol.
@@bridgeburner909 parseltongue is hereditary. Slytherin inherited it from hero the foul who was Greek.
Always down for Harry Potter Theory vid!
I’m proud to have Helga Hufflepuff as the founder of my House. Hufflepuff 🦡💚🖤‼️
I can’t wait to finally see the common room Helga built for her students in Hogwarts Legacy!!
Canon never describes the Hufflepuff common room but it does describe the others and gives Ravenclaw a very large common room with shelves and books everywhere. I was Disapparated that the Ravenclaw common room was omitted from the Deathly Hallows part II film. In the book there was quite a showdown there with the Carrows beimg.captured, tied up and missing the Battle of Hogwarts. I presume that they were arrested when it was over.
I'm a Hufflepuff in Pottermore/WizardingWorld. There was also house quizzes for Illvermorny but they took it down about 3 years ago or something. I was a pukwudgie which is the American version.
So am i !!!!
You can say that Hufflepuff wouldn't help in a battle, but it's well known that an army marches on it's stomach.
Hufflepuff was the only full house that helped in the battle of Hogwarts. None of the other houses were fully in attendance.
Specializing in food charms and proficiency in combative/protective magic aren't mutually exclusive. Helga Hufflepuff was among the most powerful witches of the age, a master of charms and transfiguration. The patronus charm: of all the founders Helga was likely the one who taught it to advanced students. Also, all curses including the unforgivable, fiendfyre, etc. are charms. Nearly every spell used in battles… charms.
Helga Hufflepuff would be extremely dangerous were she forced into a fight.
Hufflepuff pride!💛🖤

I’m a Slytherin raised by a Hufflepuff ☺️Interestingly enough, I’m now a mom to a very amazing Hufflepuff daughter, who reminds me a bit of Luna with her smarts and hair 😂
I also have another amazing daughter with autism that’s firmly a Gryffindor through and through. Followed by a Slytherin son. I can only imagine the hell I raised as a kid. He can be very difficult to parent sometimes.

Video idea for you to do:
What additional effects do spells have that are not seen in the movies? For instance, what else can the patronus charm do besides ward off dementors?
Ya ever think that maybe because she was kind and accepting that she just made really good friends with the other founders and they couldn't bear to do anything together without Helga. I'm sure she was a powerful witch, Salazar and Godric wouldn't have befriended her if she wasnt. But her house's trait of accepting anyone seems like it might be a trait that Helga had.
She probably kept the other 3 founders from breaking apart, i feel like she's the boundary of the group
@@veejay160 not the boundary, the glue that holds it together. And when Salazar wanted only pure bloods, denying the right to learn magic from a lot of her house's students, she couldn't hold that together. You can befriend anyone even if they have a different opinion until it's a radical opinion that goes against what you believe is right.
@@Steph_not_Stef omg!!! I also thought of resembling her as a GLUE but I felt like you would think it's weird. Lol
@@veejay160 it's not weird, it's a characteristic that's overused in a lot of fictional writing but the fact that it's not overtly stated makes it better. They (writers) use the one person is the glue that holds everyone together trope in mainly fictional family settings.
Hufflepuff pride. 💛
See you in the common room, brother
Check the Wizarding Cards J. K. created for more information on her. Also remember magic is not restricted to one type of discipline. There are always different types of magic being borne in magic users. So Helgas' notion of excepting anyone child will guarantee her house of getting those students. Tonks was a Hufflepuff, so was the Charms professor, Newt and probably his brother along with Nicolas Flamle we're also I believe Hufflepuff. Check all the Wizarding Cards that J. K. created to find more Hufflepuffs. Hufflepuffs not only are accepting and supporting of others but kind but couple of those students in the Chamber of secrets seems to not fit the type.
Love the music.
Please make a video on how to intercept owls and on how Dobby did it in TCOS. I never understood how they could just pluck an owl out of the sky.

SlytherClaw representing here and ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME HELGA HUFFLEPUFF GOT HER DUE!!!!
Initially, Slytherin had every right to believe as he did about muggles. If I am honest I side Slytherin. Muggles will kill anything they can't understand, and erase anything they cannot exert complete dominance over. They slayed his kind most often without even knowing so during the witch trials and inquisitions. They deserve the hatred. However, my belief is he should have solidly not recognized them. They have a dimensional shift. Muggles and wizards literally have different dimensions, places on earth muggles CANNOT go. I would move there and cite pain of death upon anyone attempting to bring a muggle IN.
everyone should want to be a hufflepuff
J.K Rowling's daughter once said something similar to that degree during an interview. Her daughter wasn't a Hufflepuff though she thinks everyone should be more like Hufflepuffs.

Very good point.
You should make a video about Rowena ravenclaw
Yup
If we take the symbolic conections of each house, Gryffindor being fire (bravery and eagerness to thrive and battle throughout history), Ravenclaw being air (the free thinkers who would develop and push the world and limits of magic and knowledge), Slyhterin as water (People who are prone to question reality in a deep, emotional em profound way even if that means changing the world) Hufflepuffs represent the earth, the element of foundation, in the end, either if you are corageus to protect the community, inteligent to think of the possibilities or cunning enough to question everyone around, you still need the foundation, the practical life and simple things of the material reality, the relationships, the home, the nourishment, the daily life, that's the value of Hufflepuff, the meaning of life when courage, intelligence and ambition are not enough or not necessary.
I agree with your elements. I don't agree with your Slytherin description haha.
Maybe slytherin is water because they are mercurial and unpredictable. Neccesary but dangerous. Essential to trade and travel.
They have the most ostentatious house in the new game. They are the villains. Their house is grandiose, unwelcoming and uncomfortable. Stone and water.
@@jesseleeward2359 Describing them as mercurial and unpredictable is indeed better, thanks for poiting it out, I just wanted to see them in a more positive, brighter tone XD (also because that's one of the houses I would be into, other then Ravenclaw).
I guess we can see slytherins as being in a dangerous position of people who think too much about topics that are usually not talked ubout by other people, tabus, they are the ones who question difficult things, if not properly guided, they become the villains (thinking themselves to be the right side).
See Sebastian from Hogwarts Legacy, he believes the end justifies the means, his mind is on the right place, but misguided enough to trust a morally questionable path in order to help a loved one, that's a very good portraial of a misguided good slytherin character.

Hufflepuf is my fav house yes they arent the most bravest or smartest or most cunning but they had a spot for anyone so had the best intentions in my mind
Im a Hufflepuff and I'm Welsh. But Helga seems the most grounded of all the founders
Helga was very important, indeed. No one, can disrespect her achievements and contribution, to the wizarding world. About her age, I thought for some reason, all of the founders, born in the year 950 AD, Hogwarts was founded in 990 AD, which means that if it's true, and they were all born in the same year, means they founded Hogwarts, when they were 39/40. Maybe it's the case, maybe Helga was 40 back then. We don't know when they were born, or when did they die, but we do know they created a legacy, no one can deny. And I don't think, there were never dark wizards and witches from Hufflepuff house, that can't be true. Probably there were, but not many. Maybe few enough, so you can count them on one or two hands.

To me Hufflepuff cared about honest, clean and simple living, collectivism. She wasn’t pretentious like how the other founders were(in their respective ways) She saw value in every life. But of course, we live in a world where being loud and boisterous means a lot😅 real Puffs know themselves, their worth😉
So proud to be a Hufflepuff
Thank you so much. May Allah reward you 🤍🧡💙
HUFFLEPUFF PRIDE, BABY 😎
Always knew I was a Hufflelpuff
(Makes snakey lick sound)
Not needing to flex yet possessing intelligence and strength. Best type imo.
Sorry, but as a Slytherin, I cannot agree. 😉
I'm a Slytherin too!
So am I. She's ok but not the most important.
Helga hufflepiff is my favorite house
Why doesn’t anyone ever tak about how Helga was the fiercest battle dancer of all. At the first ever Yule ball she battled Godrick and defeated him with the Huffle Shuffle.
The Huffle Shuffle 🤣🤣🤣🤣 its even funnier because she is portrayed as a bigger girl (I believe)
😂😂😂😂😂
