- I picked up this Xbox 360 which refused to open the DVD tray even though I could hear it trying. We'll repair that with a new tray drive belt and also show step by step instructions on how to disassemble the console.

It's great seeing these repair videos since fully working 360s are starting to get rare. In one night I've learned how to replace the laser assembly and the issue with the tray locking up. The Xbox 360 is my favorite of the modern HD era consoles and I never want to be without a working Xbox 360.
Do you think a retro game store could help repair one?
Lmao i got about 7 working ones
I am not going to lie, I would love to see a video of you fixing the red ring of death on a xbox 360. Your expertise amazes me and I enjoy watching the quality of workmanship you put in your videos. Keep you the great work!
Oh my gosh. I’ve been tinkering with my disk tray for a week now and couldn’t find the issue. I didn’t realize it COULD be the belt because I wasn’t aware of the magnet keeping the drive in place. Thank you for opening my eyes!!!!
I didn't end up needing to buy the band but your explanation helped me troubleshoot my own problem with the tray. Very thorough. Thanks for the great walk-through.
Hey, it is absolutely important to mention that one of the tabs is DIRECTLY underneath a rubber foot. You might need to pry off the rubber foot to press in the tab, like I had to do. Thank you.
Makes sense and pretty sure its whats wrong with mine. I was searching other videos that just were about cleaning to get it unstuck and nothing covering this particular issue.
Thanks for posting this.
My problem was the gears under the tray were dirty. Thanks for the help. Without this video I wouldn't have figured out how to open this.
Artie on the belt. I brought home when I retired cans of spray-grip. It makes the belt slightly tacky and was made for large fan v- belts. What I do is spray it on a q-tip and very lightly dress the inside surface of these tiny belts and it lasts about 5 years with the original belt and keeps the belt from deteriorating. Thanks for the videos.
Dude, you have saved me. I was thinking my Xbox 360 drive was a goner, but checking out the small band per your suggestion, I saw that I had the exact same problem. By complete chance, I found an extra band in my things which was an exact match of the band in the drive, but new, so replaced it and it is now working fine again!
Thank you so much for your video, bless you.
Quite a helpful video. I found mine in the dumpster it had the power brick power cord audio video cables and even the controller. Your video will be very help in replacing the belt for the disc tray
eject mechanism.
Your explanation of the root problem, and what causes it was very informative. Thanks for the video!
Thank you sooo much. Had a spare disk drive with a bad laser, but a good belt. Fixed my personal console.
Thanks for your help! First time disassembling an XBOX 360 and not used to having to do this for the trays on the PS2’s I normally work on.
Haven't worked on enough then lol 😂 been doing video game consoles for about 15 years now
Outstanding explanation of why the drawer sticks, not just how to fix it. Plus you addressed my concern that the replacement parts were on OEM and out of spec. Well done, could be a little shorter, but otherwise a great video. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you for the instruction video I pulled my 360 apart because of a stuck tray .I took off the little rubber drive band washed it in detergent then cleaned the spools it worked great. I am glad I had cause to open it up now because the cooling fans and heat sink fins were totally clogged with dust. I now have a smoother quieter machine cheers !
Awesome video. Thanks for the help. That should do it... just waiting to receive the replacement belt. Much appreciated!
Loved the DVD breakdown Ty.
Thxx...I like how you explain & breaking it down to details very nice 🙂
Thanks sir! You saved 6 xboxes :D. True life saver.
Good job, starve those landfills.
Nice and effective troubleshooting. Thank you. Keep it up.
Thank you very much!! Best wishes from Taboão da Serra / Brazil.
Please, never stop making these videos :)

Thanks for posting this video. My dvd belt was dry and that's definitely what caused the slip! I replaced it with a rubber hair tie, who knows how long it will last. I recently dusted this system off after having not played it in probably 6 or 7 years!
Glad it helped
Thank you so so so so much! This video was perfect at explaining everything! My Xbox works like it's brand new now! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
If your up for a knee slapping good time , you can lightly knock on the top left corner and turn the power off when the that opens then fight like a spb to get the band on.
That is how I do it every time
Thank you so much. Your video was very useful. I save a good money fixing it myself.
Fantastic !! Worked a treat !! Thank you for making the video.
so you just change the belt and started to work again. I have a parts one and original and both have eject problems. Sometimes it opens, usually problematic. But plays the disc when inside.
@@jessecanty7367 yes I just changed the belt and it works perfectly.
Now the problem I run into is when I put the top shell back on, the tray doesn’t open, but when I test it without the shell it works, I’ve checked and nothing is hitting the tray it has plenty of room I just don’t get it
thank you! the belt slipping because it cant over come the magnet with no disk is exactly my problem. with out even going to check. i know this is the issue!
Don't stop making videos you're the reason why I was able to open up my Xbox and clean it up. Have a question where do you purchase the rubber band for the drive you don't have a link setup thanks again and keep up with the videos
I don't remember the exact vendor, but I just searched on ebay, and there were many offerings.
Concise and informative. Thanks.
Nice, my xbox 360 slim now works fine i just clean the whole dvd drive you just save my self like 80 bucks for a brand-new dvd drive, like and subscribed.
Thank you. Video is done very well.
Nice video! I just saw a cheap one with this problem and was thinking of fixing it.
this worked for me, thank you!
What a guy.. Working perfect now
Thank you for that great video…I got my X box fixed😊
you dont realy need to tear down the whole console and disc drive, to repace tray belt just remowe face plate and open tray manualy and then fish the belt in from the front
Also for the band you can put it in boiling water and it’ll shrink
Very knowledgeable. Thank you.
Can you share the dimensions of the belt? I know it has to have a square cross-section, but I'm not sure about the length.
I did the same, replaced the rubber xbox 360 drive belt with smaller one and drive started opening and closing. Thank you for guidance.
Very informative .. thx...nice watch btw👏
Thank you! Very helpful!
Try cleaning the disc tray the drive belt the gears also try replacing the magnet make sure it's the same one it's how I fixed my Xbox 360 e console and it works excellent
Mine is stuck half an inch out and turning the wheel doesnt work
same issue for me...
So my issue it that the tray is moving the head assembly and wont move past that little gear point? Forcing it only makes the head assembly move with the tray half open.
I bought an Xbox 360 from a friend and the disc tray refused to open I took it apart I couldn't believe how filthy dirty it was inside and got disc tray opening and closing now
What if My 360 doesn't want to test without be closing up the metal cage and putting all the screws back in.
Did all this and now my disc tray won't stay shut? Looks like the bar on the bottom I pushed in did not come back out?
When releasing the tabs to open the white outer shell, it's MUCH easier to use the tip of an unfolded paper clip instead of a screwdriver.
My tray opens when the top cover is not on it but when I put the top metal cover on it doesn't open. I cleaned the ring belt but I don't think that's the problem. Any suggestions? Edit: it was the magnet problem.
How did you solved it?
@@omaraliiqbaldavila4612 turn the belt so that the magnets aren't attracted to each other whilst the disc is closed and then eject the disc tray to test that and it should work fine.
Your very smart and great at what you do. Thanks for all your help and you sound Alot like George Lopez lol 👍👍
Thank you, sir
Thank you so so so so so much you saved my 5000 rs love from pakistan 😉😉😉
This tv is goat Sir 🐐🐐🐐
Good job bro 😎
Great video, very helpful in understanding the working principles of this mechanism. I have exactly the same problem with the tray. Another problem is the very noisy mechanism, probably the fun. Is there a solution? Is it dust that inhibits the fun from factioning properly, hence the very noisy fan? Thanks again!
You might want to clean and lubricate the rails that the head assembly slides on.
@@artifactelectronics Thanks for the advice, I've done it and works okay.
Fixed it ez way:
Use keycard or someother card gently push the disc tray down while opening (button) and success get a small brush and 2 pins and go to work.
It helped me thanks alot❤
Thanks for this
What do you do when you’ve pulled the tray completely out?
Nice thank you very much shall try
This sticking 360 drawer was my first repair. Now if I could only repair something else.
thanks, i just salvaged a GTA EoLC disc from my red ringed 360!
If everything else fails, slight pressure with a butterknife while opening helps...
...not recommended for ever ofcourse
Yeah I noticed it was always opening when I had a disc inside. It only got stuck when it was empty. Do you have an ebay link for the belts?
Just search for "Xbox dvd belt" on ebay.
I have another fix for This, if new rubber band does not work: 24:30 look for the shiny metal plate with a little hole in it, next to the motor that spins the dvd, bend it down a little more, althoug i sugets You unscrew it and bend it in your hands, put it back and try, if it does not work, bend it more and try again. By doing This You Will increase the spring force of the metalic plate, enogh to overcome the force of the Upper magnet to push the lens and motor down, so the tray can Open, ir Will Open Even if You close it without a dvd in it. You are welcome!
when i go to put the top metal lid back on top of the disc drive and screw it back on it doesnt want to open what am i doing wrong and why wont it open can you please help me out
did you find any RRoD console? I think it occurred mostly with the oldest revisions.
I've found a few of them, but in order to fix them you have to reball the affected IC, and I don't have the equipment for that. People have suggested using toaster ovens, but I'm hesitant to follow that approach.
you are the best
Glad it helped
Subscribed to your channel.
I was trying to open the case from the step at 11:20 and I think I've broken a few tabs, is it possible? I don't think they clicked, I have a bad screwdriver, it looks like they are gone, I'm I able to open the case in this situation?
EDIT:
those 3/4 under the ethernet nest, those under the power nest have clicked and opened fine
You should still be able to open the case with damaged tabs, but then putting it back together is another matter entirely.
The disc drive is absolutely jammed. Even after taking it out it simply will not open. It pulls out maybe an inch and get hung up on something.
Exact same problem here.
He says something about belts by being able to break a magnetic force made inside the console. Check from 23:23. Week belts cannot separate the magnets that keep the disk tight and stable when tray closed.
Does the DVD magnets ever become weaker? I feel like if I were move the Xbox from horizontal to vertical...which, I did. The disc became loose and scratched things up. It may or may not be related to why my system reads some games and others only after repeatedly tapping the system as it reads a disc!? Idk .. It's something, not related to the leader itself I feel...
If you turn the Xbox while the game is on the gyroscopic action will over power the magnet
thank you so much!
Hi i copy exact what you do but now dont want to rear the disc what do i do
thax you i had to clean the rubber circle so the disc can eject.
my dvd tray seems "locked" in place. even with the drive wide open i cant budge it. feels latched from the back corner
So does mine! Have you found a solution?
@@shutup.2046 A plastic nub is probably out of alignment on the tray mechanism m8. Make sure it is lined up with the guide slot.
If you look at the top of the disc tray after it is taken apart, there is a guide nub that can come out of the track if you have forced open the disc drive.
gently push down on the nub from behind the slide tray, and push up on the lever on the opposite side. You should be able to now push the nub all the way to the right and slide the tray back in to make sure that the nub is in the guide rail.
Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't
@@shutup.2046 even though i was 100% certain it wouldn't, a new belt fixed it, and literally every other drive tray issue i've had since
I remember the original microsoft xbox 360 there was four versions of the motherboard xenon zephyr falcon opus jasper and vejle
Hey i don't expect a reply, but the motor on section with the belt won't even spin now. Did i break it?
Make sure that the wires are still attached to the tray motor.
That's a easy fix for the Xbox 360 just remove the four Philips screws clean the gears and drive belt also put a new drive belt on its how I fixed my original Microsoft Xbox 360
OK I did all this, but the eject button doesn't open my disk tray now, I can only open it when I am in the interface with a controller. With the faceplate off I can use a screwdriver to push a portion of the attached colored plastic in so then it opens. IDK, I am glad it I can open it now but it is not fully functional.
eject button is broken or check if it is placed properly, open your xbox 360 and check it. check some youtube video.
My 360 was submerged in water years ago and I’m just now getting around to testing it. All the game data seems to be there but the disc drive just won’t budge at all. I’ve taken it apart and I’m at the stage of replacing the belt. But when water becomes a factor, who knows what’s going on. What I’m wondering is, what signs of damage should I look for in a disc drive that’s been in water, and what should I do about it? Should I just start by trying a new belt?
It really could be anything having been submerged! Some suggestions from a fellow layman:
- Corrosion is the obvious first thing to look for. Look for signs of metal oxides like rusty powder in the boards. You can try cleaning it off, but any corroded boards will probably just need replacement.
- Open and close the tray mechanism, feeling for major resistance. I'm not sure how well the gears disassemble but resistance would imply they need taking out and cleaning with isopropanol.
- The original grease might have degraded on the sliding components. Apply an appropriate grease to the laser module sliding bars and maybe the plastic sliding piece that plays a part in tilting the laser module out of the way before the tray opens.
- Replace the drive belt if cracked, tight enough to slow the motor, or loose enough to slip.
- Clean the laser lense with isopropanol and cotton bud. Failing this, replace the laser module. Replacements going for £9 one still these days. Just check what kind of disc drive you have as there were several used over time.
- Failing all that, but the bullet and buy a whole replacement drive of the correct make.
@@MUSTASCH1O I ended up asking Reddit and they told me to order a new laser. Turns out that’s all that was wrong with it lol. Thanks for the reply :)
@@Naytone I'm amazed your machine survived. Glad to hear it was a simple fix!
My friend' you stated that the disc player is not a straight swop this is true because of microsoft DRM built into the player as it syncs with the motherboard' however there is a get round you get your replacement discdrive open it up you will see a small pc board that has 1 black 1 red 2 white & 2 yellow , desolder & remove open up your defective drive desolder the same pc board resolder original pc board into replacement drive , the reason for this is the sync codeing is on that board all you have done is replace the hardware not the sync software hope this helps .............
You're right, but the replacement drive mechanism has to be identical to the original.
@@artifactelectronics My 360 won't read discs anymore, and I was wondering if I have to swap the drive itself. Will try cleaning first after seeing this outstanding walk through, but if that fails there's no easy to find replacement drive anywhere? Thanks for the video, good stuff. :)
I had this issue and i was able to heat up the belt with a hot air station and it fixed my issue and didn't have to buy a belt. My thought process is that the heat would shrink it down a bit. So 480 celsius for like 10 secs or so did the trick
Maybe this will help someone
i got 2 xbox 360 and i replace lasers because they don't work, now i have problem with opening tray - i hope changing the belt help... thank you sir!
Don't forget to clean the drive rails while your at it.
I couldn't get past 12:00 the tabs just won't open. I can't separate the shell no matter how hard I try.
There is a really small hole hidden behind the label, you will have to poke it with a clip and push.
Thanks
The black disk gets stuck, it doesn’t come out, I took it apart but the black case doesn’t slide out it’s stuck and when I do force it out it doesn’t want to come back out
Don't force the tray, but rather turn the motor hubs by hand. If you still can't get it to move you might have some gears with broken teeth.
Artifact Electronics thanks for the help bro, I did step by step and it just didn’t want to slide out, ended up taking out the memory and just threw it away, bought the Xbox one x
12:50 did anyone else have trouble removing this cover? Cause' I'm not hearing any clicks and I'm pretty sure it broke... and the clamp on the very end doesn't want to budge. These videos make it seem so easy
You really need to get the front apart first and wedge it up so there is already force pushing the halves apart. Took me forever but I got it. I used a thumb tack/push pin and pushed in at an angle and they all clicked. Do the side with more tabs first.
The actual tray on mine won’t come out more than about an inch, is there a fix for this?
You have to take it apart and check for obstruction in the tray path or the dvd hub catching on something.
@@artifactelectronics how do I do that? I have the same problem.
I had this same model before the tray became silver
Had my ps2 longer than my xbox and thankfully the ps2 still works fine but this doesn't
That tv tho 😂😂❤
