Let's Repair! - Xbox 360 Open Tray Error

  • For this episode of Let's Repair! we take a look at a Xbox 360 plagued with the annoying Open Tray error. For anyone who is unaware, this is when the DVD drive for whatever reason will not read any discs and will just say "Open Tray" as opposed to saying there is an error with the media used or showing what game has been loaded. For the most part this error is normally quite easy to fix, and I've had a 100% success rate so far by simply replacing the disc drive's laser and having it up and running again. So why is this episode so long?! Well... See for yourself!

    I'm so thankful that you and so many other people made videos for this. Watching multiple techniques helped a lot. The hardest part truly is getting the dang case open. It turned out 3 of the back tabs had snapped off making it near impossible to get the back open. After wresting with it for actual hours I finally got it almost there and then just gave it a hard yank and it separated. I hope I never have to open it again :D. Good news is, even with my lack of solder skills, it's not hard to just heat that ball off it pretty much just rolled into my trash can and then I kept applying more heat to make sure it was completely off the contacts and I was nervous after putting it back together (I tested before putting the case back on) but it worked!! Thanks so much!

    I've seen like 10 movies now where guys adjust the DVD lazer or replace it but no one has mentioned how the bars that the lazer slides back and forth should be adjusted. After a few tries it would work but half the time after that it would say the disc is undreadable, no matter the condition of the disc. Hey MrMario, nice video, glad to see you got the drive working! Bit of a random question, I remember one of your old 360 videos of you being gifted an RGH1.2 (this video: czcams.com/video/wnvYmOIk884/video.html) and I loved the colour changing LED in the centre of the Ring of Light.
    I've been looking around and cannot for the life of me find any of those LEDs that I'd like to add for my console. I don't know if you still have that system, but would you be able to take a look at the ROL board? I'm not sure if the LED itself is a standard 0603 SMD LED, but as I can't find any of those, I'm willing to bet the one used is of a different size/package which I'd be interested in finding out so I could purchase some myself. Could you take a look? I've messaged around with other sellers who do similar mods but they don't seem to be responding which sucks, hence why I'm asking here :P

    • @MrMario2011

      If it just displays "Play Game" that means your DVD key on the drive board isn't matching to what the motherboard is expecting. If you don't have access to the original drive board to swap in, or you don't have the original drive, or key on hand you'll have to RGH the console to get it back and reflash the drive. Although again, that's assuming you're getting a "Play Game" message and the game doesn't boot. Not enough information was provided in your comment.

    You can sometimes save the original laser by using a multimeter on the soldering points on the potentiometer on the left side of the back of the laser. You can use a small flat head screwdriver to move the potentiometer slightly to the left I believe to force the laser to work slightly harder and that can fix read errors in many cases on the 360. You don't want to turn the screw literally more then a hair because you can quickly burn out the laser. With my multimeter set to 20k I have my 360 drive set to 3.2, I've read that going lower the 3 you can burn out your laser quickly because you are forcing the laser to work to hard. For most people you will want it set to 4 or higher but I believe my drive is dieing so it lets me get a little more time out of it before it does die. Just an FYI for anyone reading this in 2022. You can Google search adjust Xbox 360 pot for detailed instructions.
    Many people attempt to do this without a multimeter but I wouldn't. Turning the potentiometer even the slightest turn can result in huge over swings resulting in a burnt out laser. I would estimate a good amount of lasers can be saved this way, at least for a while. Sometimes there is nothing even wrong with your laser. Sometimes they come set wrong from the factory. If it's used the bumping around to have it shipped to you can cause the pot to move, even just the opening and closing of the tray can cause the pot to move over time.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh yeah, I'm familiar with that method, although as you said it can work for some time. It isn't as much of a fix however as a full replacement, and in my experience I've gotten disappointing results doing a POT tweak.
      I did a few and wasn't happy with the results, and with lasers being so affordable, it's just better in my opinion to replace the whole laser with a new one.

    • @masamasa1815
      @masamasa1815 Před 2 lety

      @@MrMario2011 Yeah swapping the laser is definitely a permanent fix and I'm going to do that myself for my 360. But the pot tweak lets me play with the broken 360 I got on ebay until the new laser gets here.
      I am curious though what we're the results of your pot tweak? Did the laser die? Or was it just unreliable at reading disks after the tweak? My first adjustment on 3.5 would read the disk but it sounded like it was going to launch to the moon and then would shut off, I had to slowly lower it while testing to eventually get it to work. Who knows how long it will last, who knows how long anything will last on a 360 haha.

    @DeclanCrane Před 5 lety

    That screw coming out of the white slider in your DVD drive always happens to me. It's super annoying and has nothing to do with the replacement. It's actually just the crappy made slider, and the thread breaks. You can buy replacements on eBay but I put super glue on the screw and screw it into the slider. That holds it down

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  Před 5 lety

      It isn't an issue with threading, it is an issue that aftermarket lasers could possibly have. A few in here have confirmed the previous screw would not fit snug in a replacement laser and I was also recommended by the seller to use a bigger screw from a hardware store. Not really surprised at the inaccuracy now with it since the Xbox 360 isn't a current generation console anymore.

    • @DeclanCrane
      @DeclanCrane Před 5 lety +1

      Ah okay, it could be possible the aftermarket sellers are fixing the original issue, I'm not sure. I've swapped multiple OEM lasers to get different consoles working and it's an issue that has popped up a fair bit. Glad you got your system working!

    the backup disc looks cheap, non verbatim. i also use low priced ones but i usually have high pi pif values sometimes read error. can you redo a video on liteon ihas and imageburn for cheap discs?
    BTW i also got 141x laser from ali. i checked the resistance it was 1.5kohm and as per tutorials it should not be below 3. usually it is 5 to 6. anyway its still running dont know for how long.

      No need to redo the videos for them as the process is the same. Cheap media is cheap media.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  Před 4 lety

      Gotta use some tricks! Maybe use a flathead to slowly loosen it, or put a rubber band between the screw and your screwdriver to add some tension. Just try a few common methods for removing a stripped screw.

    9:00... I replaced the laser on a friend's XBOX360 this morning... didn't know about that solder blob. I've repaired 6 360's overseas by replacing the laser and they all worked. Is the solder blob a new thing?! His 360 has the 'open tray' fault, guess I will have to get with him and see about removing the solder blob on the laser I installed... huh... ALSO, I thought you couldn't change the disk drive itself. I read, some time ago, that the CDROM & the motherboard are linked so you couldn't change out the drive.

    • @MrMario2011
      @MrMario2011  Před 4 lety

      The solder blob has always been a thing, at least on properly packaged lasers. You can swap disc drives as long as you either swap the drive board as well, or you use software to transfer the DVD key.

      @@MrMario2011 That's interesting about the blob and thank you for the information on the disk drive. Now to just find one, my buddies XBOX360 has this issue. We're going to try removing the solder, but in the event that doesn't repair the drive I'll have to replace it. Thanks for the information.

      Jerry, just bite the bullet and try a few repairs. As you mentioned, this happens a lot with all retro consoles, so if you want to keep them for years to come, might as well learn. It gets easier and soon you will be a pro.

      I'm asking the same question as you here LOL That sounds like an unfortunate circumstance if anything, because formatting a hard drive alone wouldn't break your DVD drive.

    When I replace xbox 360 lasers. I always have to put a fatter screw to hold the worm gear to the laser. The black screw on the x-clamp works good for this. That happens alot with 3rd party lasers.

    FYI, your laser died very quickly because you are using very cheap DVD+R DL media. Windata is notorious for killing lasers. Buy a good brand like Verbatim.
