    ⭐ About Travel Beans:
Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
    What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. If you enjoy this kind of content we'd recommend checking out our Italy Road Trip series, USA vanlife series and our Japan in a Tiny Van series as well as our UK vanlife content.
Our time spent overcoming depression has influenced our outlook on life dramatically! We are now traveling the world in search of what makes us happy. We love sharing the highs and lows of our trips through our videos and hope to spread a little positivity and light to all of the beautiful people who take the time to tune in and watch each week!

I’m amazed that your friends still manage to travel because someone has to take care of the animals, garden and property while they’re gone. If you are serious about this, it would be a good idea to watch a few videos on the difficulties of buying property in Portugal. The red tape for everything is quite prolonged and requires a new level of patience. I learnt a few useful things. Do not borrow money in Portugal or use an agent. Learn the language and always take a Portugese speaker to appointments, preferably a lawyer. It sounds too hard for me. I shall enjoy watching you do it though. Love from Australia. 🌈🦜🐨🇦🇺

i'm from Portugal. I have friends living all over the country. Trust me when i say this - consider Madeira. Great island, special prices for Madeira residents to fly to mainland Portugal, awesome infrastructure, but perhaps more importantly, great health system (much better than mainland), good schools, cheaper lifestyle and overall more quality.
I'm from Porto, i love my city, but definitely recommend you take a serious look at Madeira.

    • @Alex-bu6xi
      @Alex-bu6xi Před rokem +13

Let me bring other perspective to this. I'm from Açores, the other portuguese archipel (born and raised there, living in Lisbon for the past 14 years). Madeira might be appealing, but it is still an island, and even though the weather is much better than in Açores, sometimes is bad as well, and the skies won't let you arrive, or leave. There is no other airport, there is no train or boat, you just cant do anything, it is completely out of your control (is the price you pay to live in a piece of heaven). Madeira have one of the most challenging airports in the entire world. It is something you get use to, specially if you have family there, but would not be my choice. It is something that happen in the mainland as well, but not with the same "intensity". If you guys were a retired couple, or looking to a place to spend the majority of your time, I would totally agree with this! But if I was someone chosing a place to plant my roots, while still exploring the world and moving from the UK and the USA (maybe with some cheap and non refundable tickets) I would never ever chose an island. Although I hope, if you pursue with the plan, that you take the time to explore both archipels!! Nice and safe travels for you three! 😊❤

I did a small loan which is all paid up now and also - nary a grandparents birth certificate or other random thing was required. I have lived here now for over 15 years. Don't let folks scare you off from your dream. My best comment on my big moving adventure was not to fight stuff; if doors are opening then walk through! and if the process is continuously difficult at every turn then maybe rethink steps and be willing to be flexible and adjust. I am a new follower from watching you with the Newby’s loved it. So I started looking at your other travels.
I just found where you stayed at the park with the lions. What an adventure. It was amazing. Other experience and what you learned was so good .
The one question was did they ever look at you straight on to your face.? Thank you for sharing this information and experience I would go there for sure if I was much younger and healthier. But blessings to you two soon three on your journeys ❤️🙏🏻❤️

What a beautiful place to live, and home to make! I will follow The Newby's to see more.
I expect you already know this, but there are lots of CZcams chanels who have bought or are buying land in Portugal. I reckon they'd have loads of info which would be relevant.
The Wildlanders, The Indie Projects, Mr & Mrs Adventure, Project Amber, The Expawers (Looked into it, decided against it). I'm sure there are more too!

  • @myvillagelifeintheupperhar607

The property is lovely. That looks like a lot of work. We purchased our home in the Upper Harz in Northern Germany three years ago. We have a large yard, and I spend a good amount of each week mowing, weeding, and landscaping. I love it, but at 53, I firmly believe that retirement will be a low-maintenance apartment. 😅

Hi, I just nipped over from the Newby channel to watch this. It was great to see the other side of that episode.
I've got to subscribe haven't I? It'll be fascinating to see a new variation of Portugese homesteading.

What a great video! 🥰 And what a lovely family the Newbys are and what a beautiful and interesting homestead they have set up for themselves! 😍 I can definitely see the appeal of doing something like this. Having a holiday home (or permanent home) in unique place like this has interested me greatly over the years and we have considered doing it a number of times. The challenges and realities of such an undertaking have always stopped us though. The biggest draw-back for me is that there is a reason some of these countries are so much more affordable. There is often economic and socio-political instabilities present. If not directly in the particular country you are considering, often in the surrounding region/s. There may be logistical challenges in sourcing items that are needed, there may be limited health, hospital and diagnostic systems in place (especially in more regional areas). Then there's the language barriers, learning new social norms & customs and ESPECIALLY the legal system. A fair amount of leeway is granted to travellers but not always to residents who are held to a different standard and expected to acclimate and learn the ropes quickly. The consequences of not doing so can sometimes be harsh and drastic. Then of course there's the reality of being separated from your families and friends. In your case Portugal is not too far from the UK and you both travel extensively so are away from home a lot anyway. But, in my case (living in Australia) returning home for a visit or having others visit us would be rare due to the time, cost and distance needed to be travelled. So there's a lot to consider for sure. I think the risks/costs are high but so too are the benefits/rewards. We know two people who have done international moves and, in both cases, it has gone very much along the lines of what I am saying above (ie- a great experience but it presented immense challenges). They have both returned home now. I think they needed to do it just to satisfy their own curiosity and to see for themselves what it was like / have that experience. Now that they've done it I think they are content to be back home and don't feel the same "pull" that was drawing them away before. So I guess, if you are going to do it, now would be the time; while you are both still young & healthy (and while you still have the urge to do it). Plus your YT Channel affords you the flexibility to work from anywhere ^_^ Do your tour of the US in your camper like you had planned and then, by the time you finish that, Noah will be 1 year old and you can tackle the next big project of setting up a home overseas ;-) I'm sure a huge reno project like that in an interesting new country with a toddler under-foot would make for some hilarious & brilliant content to upload for us all to consume 😅❤ I'd certainly be along for that journey for sure! How fun x

Great video! "You'll never run out of things to do" never a truer word, though more like "You'll never run out of things you had to do yesterday, otherwise..." Still, hard work never killed anyone, after all, and there's the satisfaction of building and growing stuff with your own hands - go for it - otherwise it'll end up being an 'if only we had done...' So, as long as you have a good hospital nearby you'll be fine.

One of your fellow Brits, also van life traveling, made the move to a Spain (nice villages close to coast, in the mountains) some years ago. They also explorered Portugal for land, but found the summers and some other things were less appealing than España. Their channel is the “ExPAWers”, might find those video blogs insightful also.

I would recommend comparing things like quality of healthcare and education. Sometimes a low cost of property/cost of living hides other downsides. Also, it's fun collecting eggs but not so much cleaning out the coop.
