    Fun fact if you line up the character names, it spells Octopath, but if you line them up with their moonshade order counterpart, it spells it backwards.

    Trousseau was the one I really felt sorry for. So young and such a kind, gentle person but so full of doubt and self-hatred after failing to save his sister. I think he was as much of a victim as anyone else. If he'd never been shown the Book of Night and stayed under Castii's wing, he might have never gone off the deep end.

      As someone who's survived a lifetime of severe trauma--born into it, in fact--and whose development was drastically and irreversibly altered as a result, I have a personal stake in this convo. It's also why I felt pretty validated by a lot of the antagonists in Octopath 2.
      Long comment incoming:
      Trousseau, Kaldena, and the Darkling are characters who were manipulated, and ultimately corrupted, by the Moonshade Order and their accomplices. They harnessed the trauma of these people (and animal) for their own ends, to a point where there was no path to redemption for any of them. As for Harvey, he too was someone who was swayed by the Moonshade Order--but rather than being manipulated directly, it was his own weakness and inferiority complex toward Osvald that compelled him to join them willingly, because he believed they could compensate his own weakness. After tasting the power they gave him, minuscule as it was, he became intoxicated. These are all things I have struggled with personally, and it is a constant, lifelong battle. I will never be free of these things, and it means I will always have to face them down--and to fend off the influence of unsavory groups on this side of the fourth wall, who actively seek out people like me to use their trauma for selfish and malevolent purposes.
      Believe me when I say, it would've been the easiest thing for me to fall into bad company as well; the likes of ISIS and other terrorist organizations, criminal groups, extremists, and the like, with their "promises" of a glorious afterlife or to 'be part of something great." But I wanted to be stronger than that, and yeah, that means being stronger than the people who basically killed who I was and would've been, forcing me to re-create myself as an individual--but more importantly, it means rising above the greed, hatred, and other aspects of human nature that drove these people to do what they did to me. No, it's not easy. Not even with support from others--something I've never really had, honestly. All of these characters, who fell to corruption, have that support--from colleagues and subordinates, and even from the Travelers who tried and failed to reach them. And in real life, I've seen people who do have support networks, yet were unable to find the strength to overcome their own demons; in fact, I've personally known a few of them myself. It's why useless advice like "You need to get over it" is just that: completely and utterly useless. It's unhelpful at best, and often makes things even worse.
      ...But as painful as it is, it's helped me a lot to see others who went down paths I've chosen not to follow. Whether it's the Moonshade Order or similar fictional groups, or real-life terrorist/extremist/criminal organizations, what these groups ultimately do is create more traumatized, damaged people, and perpetuate a virulent and vicious cycle.
      Much as I've screwed up, I've never wanted to contribute to that. The only way to help end cycles of abuse and suffering is face oneself, first and foremost.
      Should also mention that I work with animals as a volunteer (no-kill shelters) and my specialization involves cats who come from traumatic households, are taken in as feral, or otherwise have behavior issues that make it hard for people to interact with them, let alone adopt them. Having lived experience makes it easy to connect and relate to them, but working with them is also a way to turn my own hellish past into something positive--poison into medicine, if you will. And, due to my developmental circumstances, I'm much closer to animals in the wild, and the natural world, than I will ever be to humans and civilization. It's not simply a matter of preference, either--it involves my behaviorisms and psyche, and some physical aspects as well. A lot of this comes from basically being a psychiatric lab-rat for most of my life, and being subjected to literal mindfuckery. It's honestly a miracle that I can even type stuff like this after all that's happen, if that says anything.
      So it's probably the Darkling I relate to most personally. I survived 20 years of medical experimentation and had to come to terms with this alone,, along with the fact that it's 100% legal and not considered a transgression of life itself--not even when children are the subjects. Animals are regarded even less. I don't know...maybe it's different outside the United States. But this country is one that worships at the altar of the almighty dollar. Even life itself is second to money here.

      @@seanobrien276 I'd say the game is split pretty even on the tragic vs. monstrous villains for the character stories. Trousseau, Kaldena, the Darkling and Roque are all more tragic figures (and although Roque's fall isn't as bad as the other three, there was still a driving point of tragedy for him that warped his perceptions) despite the terrible actions. Conversely, Harvey, Mugen and Claude are all true and proper scumbags for different reasons. Dolcinaea is the odd one out as she's not really a villain as she is just kind of a bitch, and even then she gets over that.

    I like how this plays even for Partitio and Agnea's final chapter bosses, even though neither of them had any links to the game's actual villains and all their covert scheming. Rather than just being a sort-of final boss theme, For the Dawn is evocative of each Traveler's growth and their efforts in facing and overcoming their inner struggles in order to reach the end of their respective path--which usually involved fighting someone who took a very dark turn and ultimately stood at the end of a path they chose not to follow.
    The Dawn is what comes when, amid all your inner struggles and staving off temptations to follow a dark path, you realize your own true power. Whatever form it takes, it always comes from within--and that kind of power is what all the Travelers needed in the Final Chapter to dispel the Wicked Night.
    I feel like this theme transitioning into Agnea's Song of Hope really drives that home. Rather than Dolcinaea just being a villain, the "battle" was basically a performance of a lifetime--a dance-off to the death between the reigning star and the up-and-comer. Agnea had to overcome not her opponent, but her own insecurities and limitations--and she had to do this by actively embracing them and making them her strength, instead of just ignoring or running from them, or covering them up with some fake act. One might say she was fighting herself as the final boss--only by making _all_ of who she is her power could she shine atop the grand stage as the new star. It's a lifelong battle for any artist, no matter their background; the truest, purest, and most powerful expression of originality is individuality--In being yourself in everything you do as a creative. It's probably one of the hardest things one can do as a human being, in all honesty, especially when people and society around you keep forcing outside opinions of what a "good artist" or "good person" is.
    Signed, a self-taught writer, artist, and photographer.

      @@xcenex479 Not to mention that Ori turns away from the Moonshade Order at the last moment (though offscreen, and it's unclear whether that saved her life, or only her soul), and Tanzy was just an innocent person who got manipulated by Mindt/ Arcanette, the true mastermind of the Moonshade Order. (Also, prior to reaching the final chapter, how many of us though that Tanzy was simply an extremely devoted follower of the Lady of Grace (goddess of the dancer profession), rather than any non-members of the pantheon?)

    • @valjamin8456
      @valjamin8456 Před 3 měsíci +1

      In actuality, both of them discovered two sides to True Magic, fueled by intense emotion alone. Harvey's hatred for Osvald is the real source of his half of the True Magic, the Shadow, whilst Osvald's love for his daughter Elana is his source for Celestial Light. (Osvald's version of True Magic isn't directly named, but I imagine that since Vide is the god of the shadows, the other eight gods of that pantheon utilize the opposite kind of power to that form of True Magic. (13 if you count the five others introduced in Octopath 1) Thus, I gave it a name that's somewhat fitting considering who is likely to have used it before Osvald.)
