  • Classic Film by Alfred Hitchcock: Young and Innocent - A man on the run from a murder charge enlists a beautiful stranger who must put herself at risk for his cause.
    Young and Innocent (1937)
    Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Writers: Josephine Tey (novel "A Shilling for Candles"), Charles Bennett (screen play), Edwin Greenwood (screen play)
Stars: Nova Pilbeam, Derrick De Marney, Percy Marmont
    Genre: Crime, Mystery, Romance, Thriller
    Country: United Kingdom
    Language: English
    Release Date: November 1937 (UK)
    Filming Location: Cornwall, England, UK
    Storyline:
An actress is murdered by her estranged husband, who is jealous of all of her young boyfriends. The next day, writer Robert Tisdall (who happens to be one such boyfriend) discovers her body on the beach. He runs to call the police, however, two witnesses think that he is the escaping murderer. Robert is arrested, but owing to a mix-up at the courthouse, he escapes and goes on the run with a Police Constable's daughter Erica, determined to prove his innocence.
    Reviews:
""Young and Innocent" is one of the best of Alfred Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood movies. It contains all of the features that characterized the finest of his British movies, and is (as many others have commented) a film often undeservedly overlooked amongst Hitchcock's large collection of classics.
The actors would all be unfamiliar to most contemporary American viewers, but it is a fine cast that does full justice to a good story, and that responds well to Hitchcock's expert direction. Derrick de Marney is engaging as the unjustly accused hero Robert Tisdall, and his character is balanced nicely by good performances from the rest of the cast (several of whom appeared in more than one of Hitchcock's British movies).
Despite the film's short length, it is filled with classic Hitchcock touches of detail, artistry, and humor, many of which are more low-key than those in his more familiar Hollywood films. It is worth watching several times in order to catch and appreciate all of the details. Three sequences are especially worth noting: (i) the renowned tracking shot at the climax of the film, which is not only a fine technical achievement but also an ideal way to set up the suspenseful conclusion; (ii) the birthday party in the middle, which encapsulates in very subtle ways most of the themes and contrasts of the movie, and (iii) the sequence towards the beginning involving the hero's conference with his lawyer, his court appearance, and his escape, a sequence which is filled with comic details too numerous to catch all at once (including one of the director's most humorous cameos).
Any Hitchcock fan should thoroughly enjoy "Young and Innocent". Beyond that, any fan of thrillers who can look past an unfamiliar cast, and who is willing to look for the subtle touches that characterized the great director's British work, will also find the film a satisfying experience."

    • @squarepeg4435

@@andreeniem8780 You are very obviously not a person of color. I don’t even know where to start in responding to this. You “don’t think they were offending anyone”? Because minstrel shows were so standard? Because there were few people of color? If you truly believe this, I don’t even know where to begin.
When a group is systematically oppressed, regardless of who they are, and they are surrounded by daily reminders of it and grow accustomed to it, that doesn’t mean it isn’t incredibly damaging and painful. Blackface uses exaggerated features of African-Americans as the butt of a joke. Your contention that there were few people of color is precisely the issue. These minstrel shows & blackface are for WHITE audiences to mock black people. For some, these are the only encounters they had-these representations of black life that mocked and exaggerated a whole race. That is not “being something different”. That is the subjugation of other people for laughs. The harms from this are innumerable. And I do believe racism and the evils it produces are a “real life” horror.

    • @andreeniem8780
      @andreeniem8780 Před rokem +19

Your reply hasn't come up in full here but it did on my email funnily enough.
I don't know how to reply to you either if you believe honestly that black people were SYSTEMATICALLY oppressed in 1940s and 50s Britain. Treated poorly or unfairly? Probably. But systematically, really? Not that there were many black people around in the Uk at this time, not just me saying it but that IS our history. What about the lower classes at the time? Do you think that they weren't oppressed or do you think it was totally a racist thing?
Racism is just one ism, classism, bigotry, sexism are others. People were (and are) unpleasant to others because of 'being foreign' but that could also be true for many other reasons, such as their background, their looks, their religion, their accent!,their behaviour whatever. To say that a specific group was systematically oppressed and not address all the other sections of the community that could also be considered as being systematically oppressed is at best disingenuous and at worst a outright insult to other people who don't fit in this particular category of racism but nevertheless also experienced ostracization from society. You think you are defending one group out of some sense of righteousness but at the expense of all the others.
You need to start looking at people more like individuals, that's my advice to you

Very good early Hitchcock film from 1937 which I hadn't seen before. Nova Pilbeam had been in The Man Who Knew Too Much in 1934. Some lovely humour in this film and Hitchcock's usual cameo, as a man with a camera outside the court house. I like the actor Edward Rigby (1879-1951) who plays Will the kind-hearted tramp who repairs china, nice humour with him when they go to the tea dance and he is unsure what to do or what type of tea to order. Good laughs too with the bumbling policemen and the useless lawyer. Hitchcock was afraid of policemen, dating back to an incident during his east London childhood when a bobby put him in a cell briefly even though he had done nothing wrong. The suspense builds nicely and the cinematography is spot-on, great scene where the camera zooms in on the drummer revealing his twitching eyes and the collapsing mine shaft scene is also well done. Great old cars too. Well worth watching.

Lots of similarities to The 39 Steps
Basil Radford, playing Erica's Uncle Basil in this, is best known, perhaps, for his roles in The Lady Vanishes (1938) and Jamaica Inn (1939), both directed by Hitchcock.

A Candle For Sixpence is the title of the book byJosephine Tay is what Young And Innocent is based on. Love them both. Wish Hitchcok had filmed Brat Ferrar and especially To Love And Be Wise also by Josephine Tay. Hitchcock would have fun for him. Wen I first read the book I immedia toy thought of Hilda Swan in the film Orlando, she had the face for the camera to play with.

An innocent person accused - one of Hitchcock's favorite themes - i.e. Cary Grant in North by Northwest, Robert Cummings in Saboteur, Gregory Peck in Spellbound, and Grace Kelly in Dial M for Murder. An intelligent film without Hollywood's current Woke nonsense.
Notice a very fat Hitchcock standing in the crowd by the outside door just after the prisoner escapes the courtroom. A delight to see him so young.
They probably couldn't find ten black men in all of Britain in 1937 hence the need for the blackface band members.

I think he needs water to drink instead of food to eat. A person is able to survive for a very long time without food but only a day or two without water. He will die of dehydration with out any water to drink. So according to that he would have already been dead for at least a day. 🤔🤔🤔😳😳😖😖😖
