I agree with you about both versions being "executed magnificently." I had not seen this version until a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoy watching it. I love the original version with Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. Right now I don't have a DVD player and am not able to watch that one unless I were to buy it online or rent it and I won't do that so getting to watch this version is a lot of fun. Anthony Quayle who plays the detective in this one played a detective in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much starring Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day and I love his performance in both. Christopher Plummer, the Captain in The Sound of Music, was the perfect choice for the husband in this remake given his dramatic performance from The Sound of Music. When I initially found this I was surprised to see Angie Dickinson playing the role but think she does a good job and honestly feel like she enhances Christopher Plummer's performance and makes him the star whereas in the original version Grace Kelly is the focus. Nothing against Ms Dickinson, but perhaps she was cast for that reason. Nonetheless, she is outstanding in her own right and contributes to the high quality of the movie. And everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I met Canadian actor Christopher Plummer about 10 years ago while he was having dinner at the Ritz Carlton Hotel (Montreal). What a fantastic guy !!! I was with a group of friends and he invited us to join him at his table. We all began to sing "Edelweiss" when suddenly a waiter shows up and asks if we wanted to see a Menu? Mr. Plummer told him "No, let these fine people GUESS what your Hotel is serving tonight" :>)

He was one of the first people I ever had a crush on after seeing the Sound of Music when I was about 8. I remember telling my mom that I was going to marry him someday. She said, “Then what will happen to Maria and all those children?” I think I cried.

Agreed. These actors here are amazing (especially Plummer, he was perfectly cast), but this version completely removed the reason the planning scene by Hitchcock was one of the most effective scenes ever.
That scene could have been boring on film, but you can't take your eyes off it. How the actors delivered it and even how it was shot makes it my favorite scene in the 1954 version.

No one’s performance in this remake rivals the Hitchcock version. They are not bad, but Milland and Williams were just superb. Hitchcock’s way of navigating the viewer around the apartment is far more intriguing. This version is still entertaining. They did not tamper with an excellent play/screenplay.
