Can I Make My Own 'Special Effect' Film to Shoot in My Yashica 35mm Camera?

I don't want to pay silly prices to buy pre-exposed film, so can I take the cheapest film I can find (Kentmere 400 on this occasion) and pre-expose it in the studio with a funky background so it will make fun double images when I shoot the roll again out-and-about?
