This video is about Fomapan Retro Limited Edition ISO 100 Classic film. In honour of the 100th anniversary of Czech Foma in 2021, the Fomapan 120 roll films (100, 200 and 400) were re-released in the packaging that was used for the then roll fims in 1930. A real collector's item! Note that only the packaging is different, the film emulsion has not been changed.
Previously seen with the Rollop, the FOMAPAN 100 Classic is a panchromatically sensitized, black-and-white negative film designed for taking photographs. FOMAPAN 100 has a low nominal film speed but is characterized by high resolution. The film meets high requirements for low granularity, high resolving power, contour sharpness and a wide range of halftones.
The camera I used to test this film was a 6x6 Medium Format 1957 Yashica A. A simple camera, but with an excellent construction and a lens with spectacular image quality.
The film was developed with Cinestill DF 96, but I believe there was a problem with the agitation as waves appeared on the film. However, I wasn't the only person to have anomalies with this film.
The result of the images was as expected. The defining quality of Fomapan 100 is its “feel.” As we alluded to in our introduction, this film won’t dazzle you with its resume of accomplishments, but rather draw you in with its rough-hewn charm. This look and feel are a combination of individual bits and pieces. So let’s unravel this tapestry a bit and give you a rundown of some of its elements.
This is a cubic grain film, in the same vein as other classic film emulsions like Tri-X or HP5 or Rollei RPX. Cubic grain is a bit coarser in its pattern, but it is also a look we are very familiar with, as the history of photography is full of such films.
If you want an image with more texture, more grain, with more of the look of an old-school black and white film photo, then the Fomapan 100 has no problem giving you exactly that.
There is its charm and charisma to be taken into account and to be courted. And so we will conclude by repeating that, despite the graininess of Fomapan 100, despite its unique tonality, regardless of its cliff-like failure of reciprocity, this is a film that won us over with its personality.
    Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a classic emulsion that looks like a film you would have shot in the mid-20th century, then Fomapan 100 is for you. While you’ll need to buy the stock from more specialized film stores like Freestyle, Argentix, Maco Direct, B&H, it’s worth the effort because it’s a bit cheaper than traditional films from Kodak, Fuji, and Ilford. But for the best results for your film, use classic developers like HC-110, Rodinal, and D-23. While I haven’t tested the film with D-76 yet, I’m sure it would do just as good a job.
