  • Kayaking waterfalls is one of the most feared, respected, and oddly underestimated feats you can do in whitewater kayaking. It blows my mind how many people step up to their first waterfalls with little more than a roll and some courage. The purpose of this video series is to get you started on the right track. (Please keep reading below)
In addition to the tips described in this video, I strongly recommend sticking to known waterfalls and checking out waterfalls without water before you consider running them with water. Kayaking first descent waterfalls is a skill that takes years of practice and tons of homework, so don't assume this is all inclusive information for making sure a waterfall is safe. Gradually practice on waterfalls before stepping up to bigger ones, and always be conservative when assessing your own skills. Never run waterfalls without proper equipment, safety, access, or practice and please huck responsibly!
This is an introduction to waterfalls.

Awesome content. I would like to see more waterfalls explained by you. The drawings made it easier to understand. Different waterfalls, different levels,

I took your first waterfall class back in 2016. Learned a lot! Got behind the curtain at baby falls earlier this year. SUCKED! Blew my line and I knew it probably was not going to end well.

Great intro vid! Just what I needed to see! (With two low back surgeries already, this was good reminder that just because something went fine one day doesn’t mean it’s gonna go the same the next 😬). So while for me, the risk/reward equation doesn’t equate to long term enjoyment/participation in running falls, i still freaking love to watch and learn and will encourage others to check out this series!). Good job and thank you for putting in the work to create and share this series with us!

Great video with wonderful examples and explanations. I especially like the "micro-scale" examples because that gives me ideas for how to test myself on whether I know what I'm looking at in the future. Thanks!

😂 right?! 🤷🏻‍♂️ of all the drops… It’s the green landing and late, unfinished stomp that really got me, but it got me good

I’ve run it a bunch and never even considered it as a possibility until it happened. I laid around the campground a few days and ended up still doing a couple hike up Vallecito laps. I didn’t learn that I had broken it for sure until much later… it was brutal though. They had to help me out of the gorge that day. I could barely walk.. thought it was a worthy lesson to include 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

I’ve got lots more coming. Editing quality, well-organized videos just takes a lot of work and time and I essentially do it for free. I’ve got about 20 different videos already filmed and just need to finish editing. I was going to redo some of the audio for edging and holes, but may just leave it. All that to say, more are coming but I’ve been busy with paid projects.
The other thing I’m about to do is video coaching where people can pay for video analysis and virtual coaching to help their kayaking… I may set that up on something like patreon or I may do a subscription service here, but I couldn’t put that kind of time in for free… just isn’t enough of me to go around. What do you think would help people the most?
