Jetboating up the Tauherenikau River in New Zealand
Unfortunately we snapped our steering nozzle off, backing down a rapid, resulting in us trying to raft the boat home. We ended up sinking it, resulting in us swimming home, to call on our helicopter to retrieve it before the rain came. - Sport
If I sunk a boat I wish I could call a guy with a helicopter
The shallow water made it possible to retrieve.

Those look like Class 3, maybe even class 4 rapids! As for nozzle breakage, have you thought of extending the jet unit tunnel so that the entire jet unit is shrouded? That would protect the thin cast aluminum nozzle from rock strikes and breakage.
You seem like a pretty technical pilot...remember, when in doubt, throttle out! Cheers mate!

You may want to look into a Swiftwater Rescue Technician course - A well placed Z-drag might have saved you a swim home.

I am confused...how do you steer down river in a tricky section since there is no steering on jet boats unless under lots of power? Just say the hell with it and give lots of power?

When I watched the first video I was thinking to myself, Id put some foam in there... but I dont have a helicopter.

How about using Kevlar to make the hull & jet nozzle & steering cables. My steering cable broke in a very heavy surf line 12ft continuous sets. I got pounded trying to save my jet ski but eventually made it back to the harbor.

totally killer! sounds lile a good/normal day, play past the limits, brake parts in a bad spot, then gets worse and your getting wet :-) now your just lucky to have the heli, i have my own back to carrie parts. glad your safe, keep it up!

Why aren't these (very cool) boats decked, like a white water dory? Then they couldn't fill up with water. The deck could lever-clamp down onto a 2" inch (5cm?) thick foam gasket.

helicopters are used alot in NZ for farming and hunting ect chances are they own the helicopter, they say they had to "call our helicopter" if not a mate may well own it.
Goes by the hour. Maybe $300-500 an hour.
I've always wanted to learn to fly a helicopter, but the funds for hours after schooling was never there.

hi there, no fuel and oil can make the river, fuel tanks have non return valves on them, just the same way jetskis work :-)

The aluminum isnt going cut it . And welds make it even worse. You need to overlap the bottom with a special spray paint made to with stand bomb explosions. And coat it like 20x

You should install a hidden winch on it during the initial build phase in the bow..tie it off on the trees and winch it out next time (way easier than tha choppa...not quite as cool though)
