    Good video Randy, my graphs have never looked like that good with arcs...I've seen other videos where guys say you have to be at speed (20+mph) to get arcs, anything slower and you get long spaghetti looking lines not arcs but you was at idle speed, I'm sure your electronics is a lot better than mine. I think another good video to do would be to expand on this one, show the same thing but drop way points on fish and structure and show how to circle back and cast to them along with different type presentations.

  • @richardj6593
    @richardj6593 Před 2 lety +2

    You are right about 2d working. The only difference is the forward facing allows you to move on if no fish are seen. Your 13th finish may have been a top 5 if you could have eliminated fishless spots faster and, therefore, get more total cast in for the day where forward facing sonar is showing fish.

    Randy first of all I love your channel! Keep up the good work! Having said that I must disagree with you. Side imaging is the best for finding cover , mapping creek channel and overall finding places where bass would hang out. Mega 360 is absolutely awesome for fishing those places! Last two trips out I’ve caught 55.66 pounds off shore using these tools in a month that’s arguably the hardest month to catch fish.

  • @jamescaspersamanthalintner4767

    Good stuff I really enjoyed this video can't wait to get some more information on this. One of the guys in our club just got forward facing sonar and I thought that this was a good time to bring this up never used it before he's had it for a few weeks and him and I are good friends and I have beat him to our last three times on the water out of my boat with 2D and down imaging and his comment was c forward facing sonar doesn't magically put bass in the boat there is a learning curve to it. And before any of the Karen's on here start whacking me over the head I didn't say that livescope doesn't catch fish what I'm saying is that they're definitely it's not magic it takes time and dedication to using it and understanding how to use it before it puts fish in the boat. Good stuff Randy

      Depending on the cone angle of the transducer, you may only see a very small portion of the bottom in shallow water. I used to have the (cone angles vs. depth vs. how much of the bottom is scanned) memorized, but no more. so I'm just going to suggest an estimate With a 16 degree angle in 5 ft water the transducer may only scan a 1.5 foot circle of the bottom that would double at 10 foot and so on and so forth. A 22 degree or a 60-degree transducer cone angle would see more of the bottom. This applies to 2D sonar and to some extent down Imaging. I would recommend Side Imaging, and I find Mega 360 to be awesome in water 20 feet or less. You can see stumps, dead falls, rocks, fish in great detail. Even if I had a kayak, if I could put a 360 on it I would do it. It'll probably work in deeper water but I "usually" don't fish that deep. There were some older H Bird control heads called Wide Optics that supported a transducer with three heads, one shooting left, 1 center, 1 right that gave a wider picture of the bottom and showed what side of the boat fish were you on. But Mega Side Imaging is sooooo much better than that older technology. I hope this helps answer some of your question.

    • @dhjhawk
      @dhjhawk Před 3 lety +2

      @@guyb5333 It does. Lots of shallow water here in FL. I mainly use side imaging, but generally turn it off while fishing. I think the ping spooks the fish sometimes and as you say you only get a small spot anyway. I won't be getting the active target or anything. I dont think I'd enjoy video game fishing. I'm kind of old school.

I always thought that if you could see bait fish and had decent sized arches and those arches were more horizontal with a little bit of space it would be a good idea to fish. If it is true that fish get conditioned to the sound and vibrations of forward facing sonar and stop biting over time, then individual manufacturers have a chance to take the lead by simply building a sound distorter on the transducer that mixes up or masks the sound and frequency to keep fish from getting conditioned. Wait and see, this is be a huge selling point for the first company to do it.

    While I certainly agree that you don’t NEED anything but 2D, it’s been my experience that unless you have a lot of experience or a technical background, 2D is more difficult for anglers to understand what they are seeing. With down imaging you get more of an actual image of what’s on the bottom and it’s much easier to understand what you’re seeing. You even say in your videos at one point that it’s difficult to discern sometimes and you might want to switch to down imaging. That being said if money is an issue then 2 D is sufficient you just need to spend time with it

      Gerald, when using 2D sonar, what shows up on your screen can be anywhere within the sonar cone. However, a rule of thumb that I use is the width of the cone is about 1/3 of your water depth. For example at 30 feet of water, you are only seeing a 10 foot swath under the boat. 5 feet to each side. The only way to know which side of the boat your target is, is by using sidescan. There are many videos out there explaining this. Hope this helps.
