- Fussner was shot and killed while wielding a gun and making threats during an altercation with multiple rangers.
My brother was a Sheriff's deputy in Wyoming for 30 years. He then went to work as a State Parks law enforcement ranger for the state of Wyoming for 5 years. He said that he dealt with more criminal and crazy types in those 5 years than he did in the whole 30 years with the Sheriff's dept. Criminals and crazies like the parks.
Sheriffs departments generally have the least amount of work.

Here’s the thing, I’ve been there before (and in other parks) and I can’t legally carry my firearm into the federally owned buildings like the canyon market.

you CAN legally carry a gun in National Parks, and that includes the buildings in the national parks. you just cannot legally discharge your firearm.
@@orion7741 No, federal buildings are off limits. Things like porta potties and gazebo’s don’t count, but stores, and visitor centers, and others that are federal property are most definitely illegal to carry into, and most I have seen have signage.
The rest of the national park simply mirrors the carry laws of the state you are in, and you are correct you cannot discharge a weapon in the park (but I think you can in national forests, but I live in Texas and there is very very little federal land).

If I’m in a gun free zone, like a national park building, then I am defenseless and must rely on the cops (local PD, county sheriff, state police, or Feds) who for all I know may not even protect me……assuming they even arrive in time to help.

It appears local cops had plenty of info on this subject the day before to locate, detain, possibly even arrest him for crimes. Yellowstone is a big place but with only a few roads in and out. The nearby communities are likewise small. We aren't searching LA or Vegas here. Few reporters are following up on this info which is SOP. There are too many incidents that go very bad days and weeks after cops first get intell that there could be a problem. the incident in Maine is a classic example-with no follow-up on cop response. Maine's Governor and Senator are asking for more gun control though. As far as motive you can forget ever figuring that out now that he's DO, and even if taken alive you may never learn his motive. Motive isn't a requirement to arrest or a court conviction either incidentally. But you can learn what steps were put into place to find this guy before shots were ever fired, or not taken. Some brave reporter should ask what those were?

Law-enforcement the only job in the world where someone can tell them how to do it without any experience at all.
