      I do mostly plein air landscapes of buildings (indoor and outdoor scenes) and machinery. Some of the sketches I color with water colors. I’ve had people come up to me while I am sketching or painting and comment on my work. Eventually, some state they’d like to learn how to do what I am doing, or they ask could they buy that particular sketch or see my sketches to see if there is one that has more meaning to them and then purchase it. I tell them to seek out an art instructor for classes or I tell them I do not sell my work, at least the originals. I have been asked if I give classes in sketching and/or watercolor painting. I tell them I do not. I do not see the monetary value to me to hold a class with a few people. Their costs would not cover mine. It has been suggested to me to show what I do on CZcams and hope to eventually get enough followers and likes to start earning some money that way. One person even went so far as to say I could attach my email address on each video I make and let people see my art prints/giclees that are for sale. In this way I can start making some extra money. Another person suggested I show people how I actually go to the field, select my subject, sketch it and finally add watercolor. While doing that I could relate the history of the object being sketched, say the history of an old building that has meaning to the local community. In this way I might be able to sell that video to local school systems, museums, or similar groups. Thoughts? Comments?

      @@OkieSketcher1949 This sounds like it would make for really fun videos! It really seems like you're kind of falling into this CZcams thing so you have a lot of research to do. It is very complicated time-consuming and costly to start a CZcams channel, and it takes a very solid strategy to monetize it. It's not that you could "go as far" as include an email address in your videos, it's more like that's the very minimum you should do and in fact, most people aren't comfortable with making purchases by email so setting up a proper e-commerce website for your prints (and including the link in all your videos as well as mentioning your shop in the video itself) is a much better way to go. This is all high effort stuff so you should make sure that YOU really want to do it, and you're not just starting it because others suggested it. If you do really, personally want to do this, then I would suggest starting by establishing your online print shop (that will take a lot of research and work on its own). Once that's done, you could see if you're interested in starting a CZcams channel to send traffic to that website. Note that the CZcams and online website routes aren't your only possibilities. If you only want to sell your work, it's much easier to have some local shops and galleries sell your prints, or even attend some fairs and farmers' markets. As I said, do your research and look at all the possibilities. Choose what works best for YOU, not what others are pushing you to do. You're the one that'll have to do the work after all.

    Greetings Ness!
    Thank you for sharing your knowledge and insight with the world. I have been an illustrator for as long as I can remember. Only in the last 6 months have I started trying to make money doing it. I did illustrate 4 childrens books in 2020, all self publishing authors with no budget. It was a learning experience and I great way to build my knowledge and understanding.
    As many have mentioned in the comments, I am interested in the Etsy shop and selling digital download artwork. I tried doing a print on demand with stickers on Etsy but felt it was not really worth the time or cost.
    I look forward to watching the additional videos in this series and more content as you publish it.

      Hi Jeremy, thanks for stopping by! :)
      Congrats on your books!! 4 in a year is no small feat! And I hope you reach all your career goals in 2021 💗
      Etsy can be tricky... I tried a lot of things before really finding my stride. In you look at my stats in the video, there's a point in there were the revenue just EXPLODED! That's when I first introduced digital planners :) The reason is, my stickers were $4 for mini kits, and $5.50 for full kits. Had to sell a LOT of those to be worth it. But the planners are $30 each. Introducing a higher ticket item really changed everything for me. So one of my best Etsy advice would be: introduce a premium item, or a big bundle or something! Maybe for the stickers, you could have had a bundle of 10 sticker sheets or something. Makes more money in one go, saves on the shipping. I've often heard from print shops that their most successful products are print sets (often 3, or 6, matching prints).

  • @richardbornemann806
    @richardbornemann806 Před 2 lety +4

    I love this revenue stream idea, very very smart. And the Etsy store, wow, who knew??? Brilliant. I'm a CGI illustrator and have only one main income stream from illustration contracts. I'm working on a long term project right now that has been going on since the beginning of the year and will continue quite a ways into the future. I will say one thing, I've had one primary client for over 10 years, and I know that has it's risks, but they usually supply me with a pretty constant stream of projects. To fill in during breaks with them, I have a number of smaller clients that fill things out. Really liked this video and would like to hear more about the course idea. I would kinda like to do a course on marketing for illustration.

I am apprehensive about which avenue to go down. I have avoided online shop using Etsy because I don't want the stress of packaging and shipping because I work traditionally. Printables are very interesting -could traditional work for this area? I also like personal commissions but I am not fond of portraits and not sure what other areas are available. Licensing is interesting also in terms of greeting cards -though I haven't made any cards I don't have a agent and not sure how I'd go about it. Thanks again for another informative video. I'm curious, do you do contracts for all your work - specifically commissions? With those, do you require any money up front? On the same subject, how do you handle 'friends' that want free work or commissions that back out after the work is done?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 3 lety +3

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video, David! For my pet portrait commissions, I always ask $20 upfront before I ever put stylus to tablet haha.. Even if it's a small amount, having "skin in the game" really dissuades people from running off. For professional book contracts, they're typically paid half after the delivery of the sketches, half after delivery of the final art. This is quite a lot of work before ever seeing the money, but it's easier to trust when it's a professional publishers :) And lastly, after a couple bad experiences with free work a solid decade ago, I've stopped taking any request from friends and family for any kind of free work. I let everyone know that I'm not doing them anymore ever. I still do occasionally some art for gifts, but only when I want to and always as a surprise. From the way you phrased it I know you're aware of how much these "gigs" with friends can suck 😂 So I just refuse to do it anymore!

Once you know that, you'll be able to formulate a plan of action and when that time comes if you have any questions about any specific parts of that plan, I'd be happy to help answer those for you.
      Best of luck in your journey!

    Hi Ness I’m very intrigued in greeting a Etsy shop to sell products for a long time now.I'm a children’s book illustrator as well, not making nearly enough. How can I learn to design stickers and characters for a Etsy site.? And also wanted to ask how do I even go about getting in with publishers.
    Love your video thanks so much

      Hi Lizette, thanks for stopping by! 💗 For digital planners and stickers, there are some great resources on CZcams! If you type something like "how to create digital stickers" you will find many videos on the subject. There are also some courses on Skillshare about that and one sold by a website called The Pink Ink :) As for publishers, I give some tips about that in my "find clients"' video: czcams.com/video/ta5skdKkhSM/video.html
      It's really tough to get started, but try local publishers, publishers that accept submissions, and also try to submit to agents that might help you find work. Good luck Lizette! 💗

      A lot of people have expressed an interest about Etsy, so I will definitely make videos about this soon :D You do need marketing skills to sell on Etsy (or anywhere), but marketing isn't as mysterious as most people think :) It merely means figuring out who needs your product, finding out where they hang out, and going there to present them with an offer that solves their problems!

    Thank you again for this very informative and helpful video!! You mentioned about Etsy, I wanted to try it before! But I am a traditional artist/illustrator. It might be so stressful packing and shipping the physical product.
    However, I heard you make digital planner stickers or the like... So I became very excited to ask you a question. So is it possible for me to make my artworks in digital products and sell them on Etsy??

      Hi Nash! You know, I don't do physical products for that very reason haha... Packing and shipping is not my jam! But absoluetly you can create instant download products even if you have traditional art!! Traditional printable wall art are very popular on Etsy, and many other types of products (stickers, clipart, printable invites, etc) I myself made a set of digital stickers entirely in real watercolor, and they're one of my most popular products :) www.etsy.com/ca/listing/823202919/watercolor-nature-digital-stickers-full

    Hi Ness, great video! Starting an Etsy store is a tempting idea, but I'm wondering. What do you think are the requirements to find any success on such a marketplace? Is it necessary to already have an audience to advertise to, be it through friends and family or social media, or do you find that it can attract sales from complete strangers sufficiently?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 3 lety

      Etsy can bring in some sales through search, but only listings that sell are going to show up high in search. You need to bring in your own traffic in order to even start tapping into Etsy's built-in audience. It's necessary to have an audience, but you don't have to already have one: you can build it for your shop! Research is important: figure out who is your ideal customer, and where they hang out online. For instance in my case, digital planners are in Facebook groups dedicated to digital planning, on Pinterest and CZcams. I'm using a mailing list and a private Facebook group I create to take these people and bring them into my circle where I can keep in contact with them easily in the future. I'm using freebies to attract them to my mailing list and Facebook group, then hold special launches and promotions to incite them to buy. You do need a marketing strategy to succeed on Etsy, it's very hard to sell products! I will make videos about Etsy and marketing strategies!

I've been looking here and there trying to figure out in what format I would be preparing my stickers. Is that an information you could share? Do I just prepare a zipped folder with the png files or is there more to it? I am currently researching this market.

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Naomi, thanks for stopping by! Most people do digital planning with the app Goodnotes, so what they like best is a Goodnotes files with all the stickers in there, on one or multiple sheets. This way they're all in the same place and people can lasso several of them at the same time, instead of having to import them one by one. It's more convenient! However it's good to also include individual PNG for those who use other apps. Goodnotes is not yet available on Android, so that would cut off all those people! Many have asked about Etsy and digital products, so I will definitely do some videos about that very soon!

After I launched and made a few hundred dollars the first month, I reinvested it by buying my own ipad :)

      Hi Dani :) After watching this video many people have been telling me they want to hear about Etsy! So I will definitely make some videos very soon about that 😊 Etsy Ads work for some, and for others not so much. It used to be better when we could customize how much we were willing to pay per click. Now we can't, and cost per click can be quite high. Because of that it's best to only turn on Etsy ads for products at least $20-30 and then, only your bestsellers. I've played with the ads myself a little bit before but ultimately, I don't use them anymore. The most important thing is to find where your clients are and reach them there :)

    How do you deal with the possibility of your work being stolen from your etsy shop? I've seen etsy shops that have clearly just bought printables/ downloadables from other shops and then listed those files as their own. Idk if etsy does anything to stop that but it was really discouraging to see when I was considering selling printables of my own.

      In the beginning it's hard because we only seem to find the bad client and bad companies that what the cheapest art possible. Fortunately, these bad deals that we attract at the beginning are not representative of the average pay in the industry. Once you get some experience and a really good portfolio, you can apply for medium or large publishers that much better rates. You can also try getting an agent, they can usually find better paying jobs than we can especially in the beginning!

I was born in a poor region from a poor country and after 30 years of life I have left my country in the hope to pursuit as illustrator abroad. I'm sorry to hear you're so discouraged, Stefan! But think of it this way: the fact that these high paying gigs exist (8000 to 12000 is actually the industry average) is an encouraging thing, isn't it? If these contracts exist and artists are getting them, then it could be you. You just have to figure out what you're doing wrong and how to adjust your strategy to go after these high paying gigs. Stop doing the 200 euro books, they're just a waste of your time. Use that time instead to nail your portfolio and reach out to publisher with a renewed strategy. I have a free portfolio guide and free "getting clients" guide that may help you. If you'd like custom 1-1 help you can also book a portfolio review with me.
