    Have you tried some of those methods yourself, and did they work for you?

    You are totally absolutely and completely correct! Figure out who you want to work for and target them specifically exactly as you point out. Believe or not, I cold called an ad agency 25 years ago (not a typo) and they brought me in on a client I am still working with. And I do a ton of work for this client!!! All because of a random cold call. Actually the ad agency I called is long out of business strangely enough. I do find that passive (not social media) portfolio sites DO work for me and have brought some really great clients as well, with good budgets and multiple projects. But reaching out directly is THE WAY TO GO!!! Super vidéo, Ness.

      Wow, a 25 year long professional relationship form a cold call! Amazing! You are absolutely right, a mix of passive and active methods ultimately works the best :) Passive methods leave you less control, but they also don't need our direct action to create a result. When we're very busy, having a passive method running in the background can be awesome. But waiting on a passive method is not consistent - to create a stable business, we need the ability to create out own forward momentum :)

      It really depends on the type of work you're trying to get! There are literally millions of companies out there. The first step for us illustrators is to narrow that down by choosing a single market to focus on: it could be picture books, editorial, pattern design, concept art, etc. Then a research of that market will bring up industry leaders, as well as smaller businesses. Sometimes small businesses are better clients than huge companies! I detail how to do research and contact companies in my course: www.artbusinesswithness.com/level2

    thank you for the info ...but if you are not experienced dont those director and company ask for experience worker in the field what would you do then ?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 2 lety +1

      Experience is not crucial! All that matters is having a great portfolio that shows all the skills needed to do the job in the company's specific market. Even if you don't have professional experience, you still have experience with drawing. You can demonstrate that by showing your personal projects in your portfolio. It's also a lot about how you present yourself!

    I want to be a freelance illustrator when I'm old enough but I don't wan't to reach out to companies because they might not respond since they probably receive lots of Emails.
    Can I go to an art gallery or community and ask people there to be my clients instead so I can get clients quicker?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před měsícem

      I know that reaching out to clients is both tedious and scary, because we open ourselves up to rejection (or just being ignored). But that's a normal and inevitable part of working as a professional artist... It would be like saying I want to be an actor but can I do it without auditions because that seems stressful and is frequently unsuccessful! That's just part of the gig unfortunately. We do get used to it the more we reach out, and then it becomes not that bad anymore. Art galleries are a strategy for fine artists or visual artists, but is not used at all in the freelance world. If you want contracts, you have to reach to companies.

    I definitely agree that too many artists settle for less than they deserve. In your opinion, what creates that insultingly low standard that exists in many social media circles?

    • @ArtBusinesswithNess
      @ArtBusinesswithNess  Před 2 lety +2

      A combination of society undervaluing the arts, high competition and low self-esteem :/
