In this video, I build and review two kit sheds. The first is made by Backyard Discoveries and it's a fairly new product in the market. The second is made by Handy Home Products and has been around for a while. My goal is to help you know what to expect when you order and build a pre-cut shed. As you will see in this video, after building both, the differences are obvious.
Some people wonder how long it takes to build. It's hard to say because everybody is at a different skill level but I would guess the average consumer could build the Backyard Discovery shed in a day. The Handy Home shed in a minimum of 2-1/2 to 4 days. Depending on experience.
If you are wondering about the price you need to check your local Home Depot or Lowe's stores and also online at sites like Amazon (linked above) With the Backyard Discovery shed, the price you see it. Nothing extra to plan for. With the Handy Home sheds, you will have to calculate for the extra materials and possibly tools.
The last major comparison is the skill level required and potential frustrations. Backyard Discovery requires minimum skill and rarely would you be frustrated. Handy Home Products requires a lot more skill and has the potential for heavy frustrations.
If there is something I missed, please let me know in the comments.
Best of luck on the shed project!

"I gotta thank Backyard Discovery for making this video possible".
Good to know this comparison wasn't biased in any way.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I’ve been struggling to find clear and honest videos like this on CZcams. Too many building videos are overly glamorized or skip past the crucial details/steps that I need to know. I was leaning towards one shed before watching but this video helped me pick a much better option. So, thank you - you just saved me a lot of money and time! 😅
So I was totally sold on the Backyard Discovery Shed Kit only to find out in 2023 they no longer sell sheds :( ... Any suggestions on other companies who sell kits the same as this, and I mean kits that have everything included, preassembled panels, included pre cut shingles, I mean this was the perfect kit, wish they still made them.
LOL, I just did that also.
Best and most informative video I have ever seen on youtube, and without any rambling. Very well done.
Thank you for this video. My fiance and I just purchased our first home in November and I'm planning on building a shed and this helped me make my final decision. Great job with the video.
Thanks for the review! Definitley going with the Backyard Discovery shed now.
I have a shed already that someone built for me for a good price. But if I didn't, I'd definitely look into the Backyard Discovery shed. You can tell they really do care about the quality and making it easy to build. Great Job!
It was clear at the beginning of the second shed which was better, couldn't bear to watch the rest. Appreciate channel.
Cool. This is exactly the size I'm going to build. Glad I found this video.
Excellent work Sir! Thank You Sir
Very informative and thorough. Thank you!
Nice video. good insight. unfortunately Backyard Discovery doesn't make sheds anymore well that I was able to find. but good heads up for Handy Home that Home Depot carries
this video is awesome!! Thanks for making this video!
Saludos desde Argentina, Excelente trabajo.
Very nice. Great info on the comparison.
Very good! Thank you.
Excellent video!
That first shed awesome quality
I like the fact that you are using cedar wood instead of pine. Very interesting video.
Very nice video! Thanks
I Love those video 😍🙏🏼thanks I think I’m going to buy this for my house “You have my like and my Fallow”
Great job!
Wow! Well done!!!!!
any ideas on where to find a shed like the backyard discovery one since they don't sell them anymore?
Tnx so much for this
Wish the first shed was still available, would definitely get one.
agreed
Wow I'm so glad i viewed video so helpful
Great video, I just finished my floor,...I don't know whether to go 2x4 or 2x3 walls,...I know you stated 2x4s have more strength,...against what ?, are you talking snow?,...I live in Texas!,...
Bought a backyard products llc shed that was very similar to the handy home. Had to build wall and floor frames and it was a lot of work, however the package I purchased from Menards came with all materials I needed and I did find warped and twisted 2 X 3's the retailer exchanged for me for free. Started Saturday May 26th working mostly alone and finished today May 30th. If I had help, this would have been done in 2 days. I am a novice and this was my first big build. I would not want to do it again, though.
Looks like backyard discovery doesn’t sell the sheds anymore? Nice video btw
Are there any videos you can recommend to help me step by step to put my handy home 8 x12 shed together? Also, I was very skeptical from the beginning about buying it, but it was on sale at Home Depot. Any help going forward would be nice and thanks in advance.
The Backyard Sheds are really nice but I wish they made an add-on extension kit you could buy to make it deeper or wider version also available like 10' by 12' or 10' by 14' would be really nice. I really like these kits
How long do the 8x10 sheds usually take for the shed part only 1 or 2 days
Glad I saw this, cross it off my possible shed supplier. Looks kinda cheap, like it won't hold up well.
사랑함니다 감사합니다 늘사랑함니다 Thank you
The BD shed looks like exactly what I need =)…..and I just checked Home D and it is no longer available =((
great video thanks was really focus then saw you got a screw on one hand and nailgun on other
😄😄😄😄 usully happens to me
I do like this video. I seem to have a hard time when selecting the backyard Discovery link.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m in search of a shed and was considering the handyman shed... after watching your video I THINK NOT! Lol
As the backyard Discovery shed their no longer available, I'm wondering what the price was on this shed?
I recently got a shed like the Handy Home in 10x12, but there was a major price difference than say a Tuff Shed from HD. I paid for the install and actually brought my own 3/4 PT decking. Looks like it should get the job done. I notice the design shortcuts, but I’m sure the price reflects it.
nice review, very well configuration of how to put together junk lmao,
I haven't priced either one of these sheds yet I'm in the market and it's the exact size I'm looking for and I've been watching all the videos on CZcams but one thing I do need to point out which I really think was a big No-No the discovery the better shed yes but it did not come with pre-cut pieces of tar paper for the roof you can't just lay shingles on would like that it's never going to last and it's certainly not going to water is going to get underneath there and ruin the wood. Didn't need it needs tar paper other than that it looks like a pretty pretty well made kit thank you for the video
looking at shed options. Very informative. Backyard Discovery seems like a great deal
Can't get over that antique dinosaur of a drill .
It's a DeWalt. A quality drill.
Very informative video on the backyard discovery shed.a very well put together kit.a much easier and quicker kit that I have seen. Thanks
Well done... I'm not buying the second one, for sure. God bless you.
I prefer to scratch build but if I was going to buy a kit, to me the whole point is that everything is included and I don't have to cut or measure anything. So I definitely would go for the first one. If you go for the 2nd you may as well just scratch build really.
I can not find any Backyard discovery sheds... do they still make sheds?
Hi Adam where you brought the discovery shed.
I checked their website using your link, but can't find sheds at Backyard Discovery. Perhaps they have stopped selling them.
Bummer, I went to the backyard discovery wanting to buy the shed and it's no longer available :(
I noticed that too. I love how prefab it was. did you find anything comparable?
The 8x8 ft. Ready shed from backyard discovery is shown with a price of $1699.00 which is more than twice the cost of the other shed. Not sure if shipping is included in that price or if it's even still available. They say they are having problems with delivering their products. Again for that price I can build a 12x12 or bigger shed from scratch.
I would like to have a shed similar to this, but would like to use it for a possible garage in the wintertime / workshop. Wouldn't I need a cement foundation? I live in the Midwest. Any suggestions? Thanks!
Pour a cement slab
I'm a professional builder. For a garage I recommend a 3-4 inch slab with re-bar set in a grid pattern spaced at least 2 ft by 2 ft.
You will also want the perimeter of the slab to be about 10 inches deep by about 6 inches wide to act as a footing to support the walls of your shed. Also add an extra row of re-bar around the edges.
Where can I buy the one the prefab shed that I can put together where do I buy it how much does it cost 👍
I'd go with the "Backyard Discovery" any day... it's a no brainer!! I can't stand being
inconvenienced when trying to build something and you find you have to invest in
more stuff!! Thanks for the video!! Although $1200 + tax is a lot of money, in the
end it's all worth it I think !!
Just hit the link, 1699.00, nice shed but I'll keep looking.
sthwestb me to 🤗
Too pricey. Home depot sells the same 8x12 john deere shed for the same price fully assembled and delivered as this site sells for one you have to put together.
I've been researching into constructing sheds and found a fantastic resource at Wilfs Shed Formula (check it out on google)
I just came across your video , I looked up the backyard discovery shed and could not find it, it looks like it is discontinued. That would be a perfect shed to build. I was looking for something like that.
WoodBlueprints. Com
I think if this video wasn’t sponsored it would be informative. However I had this perception that this was just one big infomercial.
Hi, do you know where we can find the shed?
How much for a 8x12..and were can i get one delivered,,??
This is the only guy in the world without a cordless drill.
Ha ha! Yes. I was a real holdout because the early battery tools sucked. Took me a while to get one again.
I would have bought the shed from Backyard Discovery but they don't sell them anymore i guess.
whats with the huge gap under the rafter at 3:21, otherwise nice shed
Nice review.
How long did it take you 1 or 2 days start to finish
mmmm, I didn't buy one. I think your question may be for someone else.
I didn't see any drip edge flashing included in the Backyard Discovery Shed. Is there something special in the roof design that does not require flashing?
drip edge is very rare on a budget shed, these are budget sheds all day long
Is it me or does Backyard Discovery not sell sheds anymore?
Awesome work! Are you going to do more videos like this soon?
How long will that wood floor last?
Terrific Video... I'm a roofing contractor and a customer paid me to assemble a 8 x 12 kit shed for him. He had started and very quickly realized him and his neighbor buddy were over there heads.
I figured "how hard can it be? I'm no farmer, but I'm in constructions, and after all... It's a kit!" I don't remember the brand but it was from Home Depot or Lowe's. Me and one other guy (a skilled I should add) took TWO FULL DAYS (we're talking 8 hr days) and we had a framing nail-er and other pro-tools. On day three the shed was fully assembled, but I brought one of my Mexican roof techs to do the roof. It was a very very difficult task. Unless you have real construction experience and have tools, don't even dream of it. If I had to buy a shed, I'd get the one this dude showed in this video.
yea I had to get a white American tech to do the studs and side walls of my shed it was difficult... for him but i fired him and did it myself in a few hours.
How wide are the door openings
Do Backyard Discovery deliver to U.K?
Where did you buy them
backyard shed link "product no longer available"
yup not available
\
Is their anywhere else we can get it
Great video content! Apologies for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you thought about - *WoodBlueprints. Com* It is an awesome exclusive guide for building better sheds and woodworking without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my mate at very last got astronomical success with it.?
Yes looks like they dont even do sheds anymore. Too bad. Seemed like a great product
Yep. Not Available. That sucks. Looked like a great shed, at a great price. To bad.
Apparently Back Yard Discovery doesn't sell sheds anymore?
I've been thinking about buying a shed kit for my father, who is a retired carpenter. He keeps all his tools, power tools, supplies, etc. either in an exposed carport or in his minivan. I wanted to give him a shed that could be his workshop; it would probably have to be larger than 8x8. Do any of these kits have large opening doors on both ends? Or both sides? Do any offer any roof overhang? (We get rain and snow here). We know a commerical contractor that works on school roofs, and has used us in the past to get rid of roofing rubber. (We use it to cover outbuildings and equipment; it's heavy sheets of rubber) Could shed-kits like this allow for sheets of rubber on the roof before adding shingles/metal/corrugated roofing?
Sounds like you have some great ideas. The bigger the better when it comes to a workshop shed and I love the door idea on front and back but I can't recall a shed with one. I don't see why the rubber underlay would not work! Sounds like another great idea. You may just have to search around online for a shed that is as close to your requirements as possible and then modify it per your specifications. I wish you luck!
awesome video. but you did not have to say that it was sponsored by the backyard discovery hahaha it was pretty obsvious! loved the video
Backyard folks are not making any sheds. Do you know which other firm provides similar quality? Thank you. Atleast I came to know my limitations with building shed.
Adam - Where ya been?
Why no felt under the shingles, or drip edge around the roof decking on the Backyard Discovery version. Other than that it looks solid.
drip edge is very rare on a budget shed, these are budget sheds all day long
How do you frame a shed?
What was cost of each package?
Why did they discontinue this shed kit?
How much one of does cost?
No link backyard discovery????
Anyone know what the prices are on these sheds?
The biggest complaint I have about most of these kits (both of these brands included) is that they use OSB. I would much rather see them use plywood, which is a lot stronger and will last much longer as well. I do realize the price difference between OSB and plywood, but quality usually commands a higher price.
They sure sell them at a plywood price!
PaganWizard it’s actually smart board. It’s an osb based product with an exterior primer/paint on the outside. It stays flatter than plywood and lasts for years as long as you don’t leave exposed edges. Nothing wrong with osb anyways as long as it’s used properly
Wrong, osb is better. Obviously you know nothing about good construction.
I dont see sheds on their website
Is there pre-assembled parts for garage?

Backyard Discovery no longer has any sheds. Evidently, they haven't bothered to take down their web site.
Still, I enjoyed the video.
Hmmm, I knew you have to get a foundation down yourself before shed parts are delivered but did not know it doesn't come with roofing materials.
Are the price the same?
Do you know of any similar products? Backyard discovery has discontinued their ready sheds.
I assume the first shed is more expensive but definitely seems to be the better shed.
No price comparison?
Too bad I just went to their site to see how much for a 8x12 or 10x12 and are no longer available on their website
Okay I need the complete price comparison $$$
4,500 to 6,000 average complete with labor
YOUR DRUNK -THESE SHEDS START UNDER $1400
COYOTE I call bullshit. I’ve seen bigger sheds for under 500
COYOTE lol.
would to have seen how you install the front vent!
Yep. March 2019: Still, "Product no longer available." What a Shame.
Thank you Ryan for releasing a great product as this [ Check Details Here?> *WoodBlueprints. Com* ]. Most of the plans I have imagined in my mind are put down on your woodworking plans. This is more like a genius job. I love it!?
An outfit markets a shed you can slam together hassle free on a weekend, and it puts them out of business. Sounds about right, eh.
Daivi Celt You can always buy firewood elsewhere...
Crap I was going to buy one but no longer available what happen?
Strange. I don't know. If I get some info I will post it.

why no tar paper on the roof first before the shingles???
I was wondering about this also. Seems like a recipe for a leaking roof.
i agree it should be mandatory, but its a vapor barrier mostly, and some climates dont need that
@@BeyondBiochar Where I live, I'd toss some metal or composite over that - then run a gutter and spout.
