    Welded a long bar onto the struts of a bolt on fender kit. Vibrations loosened the bolts causing play in the fender. Which then caught on the tire, rolling the fender like a burrito. Coming to a complete stop. It was on a surface street though. Thank God.

    He is 100% right. Ended making a custom sissy bar for my live swing arm and after about 2 months the weld on the wing arm cracked. (Thank god I didn’t have a passenger in at the time) Hard tail is the way to go if you want a sissy bar

    I bought a sissy bar (Chinese made-poor chrome job) off eBay. It came with stepped mounts that went over the fender side rails. I was fortunate to work at a company that had a plasma cutting table. I made a drawing with the outline, the center points and radius measurements for the rounded corners. I gave the drawing to a guy that wrote the programming for cutting parts on the plasma table, He later gave me the two side plates that went in between the side rail and the fender on my VLX 600. I drilled the holes and painted them gloss black and replaced the stepped mounting plates with the ones I had made. They look better than the original poorly chromed ones. As you pointed out, I wouldn't mount a sissy bar to a swing arm that was still spring and shock loaded. I need to have a rear seat for my wife and a sissy bar connected to a moving swing arm would beat her to death!

    There are ways to have a sissy bar/fender combo with a swing arm/live suspension; your fender must pivot in the manner as the swing arm and have enough room to not be drug down into your tire

    Newbie here, used to working on cars, restored a 72 Chevelle and started riding a year ago. I ride a 2000 750 ACE and am trying to figure out where to mount a sissy bar, such as one of yours. Where is the safest place to mount it? Would love to mount it under the trim where the bolts are near the pillion seat, but unfortunately EVERY sissy bar with that setup is super ugly or doesn't fit my ride.

    Is it safety to weld a frame to hard tail? What about vibrations? Will not break a junction?

  • @againstthegrain9843
    @againstthegrain9843 Před rokem

    So if I want a sissy bar and keep my swing arm, my best bet would be to weld the fender to the frame and weld the sissy bar to the frame as well? But then won’t my tire keep hitting my fender when I hit bumps?

    I would think a rigid would vibrate just as much or more than a swing arm?

    • @jamesalba5732
      @jamesalba5732 Před 5 lety +1

      @@TJBRUTALCUSTOMS what's different about it? If the fender is mounted at the front of the swingarm, and mounted to the axle plates via struts, how will it see any more vibration than a rigid?
      It could probably be argued that since a swingarm has suspension, the bumps would be much smoother.
      I mean, rigid bikes still hit bumps, right?
      A swingarm can basically be thought of as a tiny rigid frame connected to something else. Unless I'm missing something.

    • @iiscd5970
      @iiscd5970 Před 4 lety

      @@jamesalba5732 the fender mounted to a swingarm will vibrate worse than the hardtail frame because it is allowed to move independent from the rest of the frame.
      Force = mass * acceleration. A swingarm (ideally the only part of the bike moving due to the force generated by hitting a bump) weighs a lot less than a rigid frame with an engine mounted in it (since the whole bike will frame will move as a single mass on the hardtail). This means assuming you hit the same hole and generated the same upward force the swingarm would be accelerated in the upward direction quicker than a rigid frame. The affect would be vibration of higher amplitude and frequency as you travel down the road for anything mounted to the swingarm vs rigid frame.
      Edit: Just to be clear the rest of the frame which is isolated from the vibration of the swingarm (via shocks) will experience A LOT less vibration than a rigid frame which is why almost every land vehicle uses some sort of acceleration to isolate you from road vibration.
