- This is how to perform basic maintenance on a Navien NPE, NPN or other series tankless water heaters. While models numbers may vary, the basic steps for most tankless water heater service are the same. Please contact your local Manufacturer's Rep or Navien Distributor to set up a training class for your company or for more information. Feel free to leave questions in the comments.

Is the service port on the recirc to flush out the recirc pump? If so, how do you do that? I think that was left out of the video.
And how do you flush the recirc system?
We had a Navien NPE-240A tankless water heater installed last year. The system includes a Navien “Condensate Neutralization Capsule” similar to the one shown in the system on the far right in this video. The “pearls” in the capsule now have a tan/brownish color. When does this capsule need to be replaced and/or how is it maintained?
When the media disintegrates new media should be added. Color changing from organic matter will not effect it. New media added can be any limestone based acid neutralizing media available to you. This can be done by the Homeowner easily.
If you have a contractor performing annual maintenance (Highly recommended but not required) this would be part of that service. Any media like this will work fine: amzn.to/3Haa1TP
What is the thin black valve with the yellow stripe on it (in the center of the unit at 2:06) ? Is that something that needs to be removed and cleaned?
Hi I did evrything like you did on video but when I connect pump to flush it water doesn't come out from hot side hose back to bucket. Any idea what to check?

Hey are you familiar with circulator pumps? I am putting a new one in and i have the part but only one shut off valve. From what I see on YT if you only have 1 shutoff valve you need to "bleed it" I guess of the air. Are you familiar with that? I have pictures as well.

I had replaced a flow sensor ( it showed 0 flow rate and unit didn't fire up ) and in a month another sensor is dead.
What is the procedure to flush the recirculation tank.

This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. czcams.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).
Im having an issue with my on-demand water heater. Ever 5 or 6 weeks the condensation line will dump around 2 gallons of water into the floor pump tank i have setup and it runs over. The pump works fine but for some reason every 5 or 6 weeks it runs over. Do the on demand water heaters have a timed system purge? Any help is greatly appreciated.
What unit is it that you have? Naviens to not purge condensate. They are gravity drained as are most other MFG'ers units.
@@eklof6510 its a "Rinnai" RUC80. it just seems like a lot of water to be just condensation. Maybe its normal.
@@eklof6510 after looking into it further, part of the problem was the float in the condensation pump was sticking causing it to run over. But even after getting a new pump w/tank, im noticing its filling up excessively. The line coming out of the unit marked "drain" is where its coming from. Its putting out 1-2 gallons a day. The new pump is running once every hour or two. Should i be seeing this much water?
Does the unit have to be shut off first?

How do I clean that little thing connected underneath with the balls in it. Mine looks slightly different but looks gross now
Take it lose, unscrew the ends and clean it and replace the media. Being nasty won't really hurt it, but the media is sacrificial and needs to be replaced when it gets used up.
@@eklof6510 I have no idea what the media is. Thank you for the reply though! I was told initially a couple years ago to just pour something into it. Are you familiar with that?
Routine annual maintenance voids the warranty?

CommonSenseAndReason Navien does not want untrained people inside the cabinet. While some of this is certainly not difficult, even flushing the unit, if done improperly with the wrong equipment or chemicals could damage the unit. This is why Navien recommends a trained qualified service person do that work. If something is damaged due to improper maintenance, that would not be a warranty claim.

There aren't any. you are referring to the BS videos produced by one contractor in particular or rumors he's caused. That guy is mad because from what I hear, he tried to get Navien to pay him for videos and they said no thanks. I guess Bosch does now. Just about every video that guy has about Navien he clearly says that units are installed wrong that he is there to fix, before he calls them junk. The units ALL are CSA certified and operating within their design. Navien units have the best warranty in the industry and the best technical support. (Even though hold times are crazy as of this date) He is slandering a good company that goes out of tis way to support the trade. It's very sad that he continues to do that.

Voiding the warranty because of self-clean-up does not make any sense! I bet any homeowner who does self-service to their water heaters will be much more careful and thorough than any contractor.
It doesn’t matter. If you pay a service plumber to maintain this unit every year, over the life of this unit you will spend enough to by TWO replacement units! You are better off doing the service yourself and setting aside the service fee each year to buy a new unit.

Basic yearly maintenance: get a new heat exchanger, 3 way valve and a new pcb board.
You obviously don't know anything about them. These are the most durable of all tankless. Yearly maintenance is not required, but it is recommended. The only real problem tankless water heaters have is people installing them wrong and them blaming the unit when it fails prematurely. Perhaps you should sign up for a training class near you and learn how to install them correctly.
@@eklof6510 I service them all the time. I’ve read the book countless times. Don’t try to take the argument from authority. All the time I see a navien with a beautiful install, hydronic side is piped perfectly, but the unit looks like complete crap. Don’t try to blame the techs. You’re obviously a contractor for navien so of course you’re gonna defend them, they literally pay you 😂
My heart exchanger failed after 7 years on the Navien. Truth told I was more angry at the contractor than I was at Navien even though it was leaking trace carbon monoxide into the house. At first the contractor tried to get me to spend 15K for a new model but I got lucky and one of the installation guys realized I wasn't rich. That gentleman fought with Navien to get it covered under a warranty and get the exact same unit shipped to us. However I still had to pay out of pocket $3,500 to get a new one literally swapped in. No changes to the vent, plumbing, valves, pumps or anything. It took them a little over an hour. The reason was because that was their flat rate for a boiler installation. My advice to anyone who has a boiler or any sort of heating system is to find a contractor who charges by the hour and not flat rate. I've had 4 flat rate jobs on the house now and every one of them I've been screwed compared to when I hired someone hourly by a solid 300 to 400%. This is why I try to do most things myself.

I don't trust the companies listed on Navien's web site. We hired one of them a few years ago to install one of the units and it was a total train wreck. Turns out that Navien only certifies a COMPANY, not their individual technicians - so you may get someone who has never laid eyes on one of these units. I think that's what we got. We finally had to just hire someone else who came out and COMPLETELY REDID the install. Nothing was done according to Navien's standards. So now I'm looking for someone to come and flush the system for our regular maintenance. The guy we used before has retired. How do we find someone who is actually QUALIFIED to work on Navien equipment? Seriously.
I'm 69 and never service a ware heater. these new units need lots of maintenance and are very expensive. 90 percent of home owners will not do the maintenance and will be replacing it with a conventional unit in 3 to 4 years!
