I'm not accusing your uncle of being punished, obviously; just letting you know so you could research his achievement again if desired. My personal history of the Hornet is short but sweet. While docked in Alameda as a museum ship, I was promoted to Staff Sergeant on the flight deck. Reason 1: I was born in San Francisco, and the Hornet faces SF in her current position. Reason 2: I deployed to combat zones twice on the USS Wasp, so the Hornet was a great replacement once I was back stationed on the west coast (Wasp is an east coast ship).

I was privileged to know a WWII vet who served on the hornet and, being an artist, his commander assigned him to do the painting of insignia on the fighter aircraft.
He also created decorative designs on the planes like Hollywood stars, girlfriends, and and nicknames for individual planes and their pilots.
Additionally, he was asked to paint a mural on the mess hall wall of all the enemy ships and planes the hornet and its air crews were responsible for shooting down or sinking.
In later years, at the time I knew him, he was asked by his son if he wanted to travel to California and visit the docked ship.
He did visit and, while there, amazed his son by threading his way through the maze of passageways to get to his birthing room.
Then, when the two of them traveled to the mess hall, they were standing next to the mural when their guide stated that they had been searching for years to discover the artist.
He disclosed that he was the man and, " bells rang and shouts went out that they had finally discovered the artist ! "
He was given an honorary membership in their veterans organization and free passes for life to the memorial facility.
It was a high point in my life to have met and known such a gentle and interesting man.
God bless him and all of his WWII veteran friends and comrades.

The USS Enterprise 'Big E' was scrapped because not enough funds were raised to preserve her as a museum ship.

People have to pay for all of that, if they donÂŽt pay they go to jail, a military that uses its resources efficiently is a military that is considerate to their own citizens and nation, it is not supose to keep ships around for the sake of keeping them at the expense of what is suppose to protect thats the freedom of their citizens

Then your going to need to seal the deck so the lines dont fade off and deteriorate in the sun . Then your going to need people to keep it up while its on display. U cant just expect people to do all that work for free. People need a living and have families to take care of.

The Hornet and the Iowa are my favorite two ships of all time. I've been to the Hornet museum many times with my family and have seen every part of it.

My Tax preparer was a Marine who landed at Iwo Jima at the age of 17 years. A very humble man who never spoke of his service until our Son-a Marine, was involved in both the initial military actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. After surviving the war he graduated as an engineer from Harvard. He became a Naval engineer and was intimately involved in the âstretchingâ and reorienting of the (2nd) USS Hornets flight deck-the cutting in two of the vessel and addition of flight decking for jets. An amazing and successful project, and an amazing, humble man to have known.
I live in Alameda. So I got to take a tour of the USS Hornet. I even got to sleep in the barracks of the Hornet. So cool!!! Go USS Hornet!!
My Dad crewed on Hornet (CV-8) from a few months before the Pearl Harbor attack, through the Doolittle Raid Launch, and all the battles, right to the day she was sunk by the US Navy, after kamikaze attacks disabled her in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. I know a lot of people served longer, and risked their lives on the Hornet (CV-12)
People just need to remember the second carrier Hornet was renamed while under construction, to prevent the Japanese from confirming the loss of the first Hornet. And of course, the survivors of the battle continued to serve for the Duration of US participation in WWII.
Microsoft undersea explorers just found the original USS Hornet, it's in much deeper and darker waters than the Titanic which is why pictures are limited but scanning images show the silhouette of a carrier with major damage, when the number 8 was spotted on the bridge they instantly knew it was Hornet
So even fewer hopes in getting it up or just diving conventionally to it. Sad

My dad served on the Hornet until she was sunk and was transferred to the Wasp where he stayed until he was sent home from injuries during a fighter attack. He spent the rest of his life disabled and suffered much pain. But without any doubt the proudest days of his life was spent on those carriers.

I had the pleasure of spending time on this ship several times. once in 6th grade and spent the night on it twice as a Boy Scout. fun ship would recommend that if you have the time and money go on board.
It was kind of neat, when it showed all the ships turning around. All those ships turning around, like synchronized swimming, very cool picture!
I haven't been to this particular museum ship but I went to the Midway in San Diego and it was really fantastic. The ship and the aircraft are obviously amazing to get to see in person but I think the highlight is that the museum staff are former members of the military who are super familiar with all the navy in and outs.
It is a great shame that we have a great ship like that in such disrepair and lack of paint. God bless you all and I hope that something will be done soon to get it done before it gets too late.
She is not in disrepair which tells me you haven't been on the ship. Lacking paint on the exterior is true. Stripping all that paint off, while sitting there, isn't an easy task if at all. I suggest you come down and volunteer where I can put you to work on the Island which I have been taking care of, inside and out, by myself for 22 years.
I love the USS Hornet. She is an amazing aircraft carrier with a rich history. Also I got to sleep overnight in the barracks of the carrier which is pretty cool and scary cause I think I heard and saw the ghosts of dead sailors.

The war footage made me realize that if we have a conventional war today, there'd be people with phones or go-pros recording everything, maybe not livestreaming cuz military secrecy, but definitely a lot of actual HD footage afterwards. We might even have multiple angles of the same battle to construct VR experiences so normal people can be in the battle without the actual danger.
That is, if we do go into conventional war, instead of just nuking each other off the face of the earth...

Hornet was sunk in the Pacific. That was CV 8 the sister ship to the Enterprise CV 6. This is the next Hornet CV 12.
No video has ever shown what it is like in a CV'S CIC during real world ops. No words I know of can express the sensation of just what that's like.

Usually they talk about how the ships were used and modified after WW2 but not here. This is particularly unfortunate because the ship was modified so completely, men who served on her in WW2 wouldn't recognize the ship as it is today. And talking about the bow, angled deck, and other changes would be helpful for viewers unfamiliar with U.S. aircraft carriers.
Fun fact thereâs a stain on one of the mattresses there because I threw up on it when I was on a scout overnight trip

She sits at the pier her predecessor sailed from to conduct the Dolittle Raid. It's a Public Shore (& historical landmark) so there's no restrictions on walking her side of the pier.
I had the pleasure of visiting this lovely ship when I was younger quite a few times. It didnt really hit me till now but the absolute scale of this thing is amazing. I'll go back sometime soon.

Was glad you mentioned Hornet CV-8 and the heroic battles she was in. She gave her all along with many men when she was sunk in battle. Its great they recently found her wreck. Along comes her reberth with Hornet CV-12. My father (Commander John W Ramsey) was supposed to have been on Hornet CV-8 in fall of 42 with VF-11 Sundowners, but she had been sunk. In 1944-45 he was with VF-11 (2nd tour) on Hornet CV-12 in various battles as a fighter pilot. Great video thank you!

The Big E is the only Aircraft Carrier to smack down Hornet's record. At one point the Enterprise was the only US Carrier in the war til the new Essex class was built. So think of the Hornet (CV-12) as second place or runner up to the title of Great Aircraft Carrier. But remember this is the second Hornet the first one was sunk so you have to add that history to this Hornet. The Enterprise still lives on in parts that are mounted to the current Enterprise as goodluck

Thank you for another video WG. As a Navy veteran it is sad to see any ship in the kind of condition Hornet is in. She was a great warship. Hope the city she is berthed in will correct this and get her looking ship shape again. Her crew deserves it and she deserves it.
CV-12 is in port at Alameda, California. She is not owned by the city but by a museum foundation and is not visited as much as the Midway or other popular carriers. we need to promote it to get more money to repair the old girl.

I remember, it was mid day one part, and we were exploring mid deck and I was of course in the back of the group. Every corner we made, I saw something move.
I remember going through a phase where i was obsessed with the hornet and the pacific theatre, yeah, i memorized so much that it got to the point where there was basically nothing left to learn.
I love this series, I would love to see if you could.do one for the USS Enterprise CV-6. Though it is no longer with us, I think y'all can do it since you could for the Yomato.

The one thing that really bothered me while watching this video, was the amount of work needed to the ship and aircraft.
From what I could tell, it badly needs some repairs and some new paint.

The ships they makes vids about were comissioned and served in ww2 or at least 10 yrs after. USS Nautilus didn't serve close enough to ww2 so it can't be added

Enterprise was the best carrier in world war 2 performance wise even though it was outdated later in the war

She was named after the second US carrier, the CV-2 Lexington Class: Lexington that was converted from a unfinished battlecruiser (supposed to be better then the battleship) class of the same name along with her sister ship the Saratoga, the original sunk in the battle of the coral sea after being damaged beyond repair and was scuttled by the Yorktowns bombers.
When she was sunk the Essex class CV-16 Cabot was being built by the same harbor who built the CV-2 Lexington 21 years prior, they requested from Frank Knox if they could rename the Cabot to the Lexington, he allowed it.

She shot down the most planes down in the whole war, and a highly decorated Carrier. She received the PUC award, and 11 battle stars and was the flag ship of Admiral Marc Mitscher who led the Fast Carrier Task Force.
A added fact was that she inherited the nickname of her predecessor, Lady Lex.
Also Japanese pilots and sailors nicknamed her the Blue ghost due to her Navy blue camouflage paint and that she bearded the name of a destroyed carrier.

She was decommissioned in 1991, she served longer then any of the other Essex Carriers in the navy and because she was built before of their other surviving Essex carriers, she is the oldest carrier in the world and designated as a National Historic Landmark.
After her decommissioning, she was donated to Corpus Christi, Texas.
I've been dying to see some love to either of the Lady Lex and the Blue Ghost be on naval legends, she by far my favorite carrier because of her unique history and the fact I've see her only a few times in person and been only once to her museum even though I live in the city.

When I was in high school, I went to a âBoat Danceâ that just so happen to be on this beautiful ol gal. I was more interested in the ship and aircraft in the hanger bay than the dance or my date. Plus, we were told itâs haunted so that gave me more incentive to look around.
