The Booth is unscripted and (mostly) unplanned. It's just a musician doing their thing. Best listened to with headphones on! - This time it's @chrisonpiano playing the Yamaha CLP785 Clavinova digital piano. He covers the two main piano sounds which are the core of this model and some of the string and choir combinations. generally speaking, he just has fun, and frankly gets a bit carried away with it. Mesmerized by a piano review? Yup. In preparation for my next piano purchase, I'm been a compulsive watcher of CZcams piano reviews. I've seen hundreds -- some pretty good. This review, however, is in a league of its own. It's not so much about playing the piano as it is about listening -- which is, I believe, what your playing is all about. You are to the piano as a colorist is to painting. You may not have the very highest skill level overall (thouugh I'd give 18 months of my life for 18 months of being to play 75% as well as you), but nobody is so attuned to the sounds (the colors) of the instrument. You've sold me on the 785. I can finally stop listening compusively to piano reviews. If I can't coax such beauty out of the CLP 785 myself (I'm sure I can not), I'll know for sure that the fault is not in the instrument but entirely in my musical limitations. That's good to have clarity about. I'll never be tempted to trade up again.
I will, however, be on the lookout for your promised next video. You've done a masterful job of passing on what you're listening for. Loved it. Thanks. (Simon-Pierre Belanger is spot on in his preference for your kind of video review. Your relatively sparse commentary is jam-packed with precious distinctions.) This video is a gift.
Thanks so much Tom. I'm actually really pleased and relieved to hear this from you as I was a little concerned people would be bored stiff watching me 'noodle' for 25 minutes (Perhaps many are!). Although we have many regular review/comparison videos, the concept of 'The Booth' is to give viewers a longer, more listening orientated demonstration which features more of the piano than the (often overly talkative) presenter. As a musician, I also find this prolonged format quite freeing as it allows a genuine emotional connection with the instrument. I love the equating of painting with playing the piano. I've used it quite a lot over the years and can't think of a better way to communicate the importance of buying a capable digital piano. More videos coming soon Tom. Take care now. @chrisonpiano P.S. I write a bit more about this on our website blog here: www.epianos.co.uk/the-booth-6-yamaha-clp-785-digital-piano/
@@ePianoscouk Not only am I not bored, but I keep re-listening to it. :) It's nice background music while I am working. If I had just one piece of feedback, it would be nice to hear a recording over the external speakers, because I get the impression that the resonance of the speaker system/cabinet of the CLP 785 is a significant part of its final sound color. Am I wrong? Haven't tried it yet in person. Thanks again for a great video!
Thank you for being kind BaeGee258. You're quite right about the speaker/cabinet/amplifiers being a significant part of the CLP785. Indeed, the system it has is probably one of the main things that lifts it above the other ones in the range. Have been receiving feedback in other comments about this and speaking with colleagues. We're going to try and produce a video which offers every way of hearing it: External speaker performace, headphones and binuaral sampling (as much as we can!), direct line out etc. We know that getting into a physical showroom is hard at the moment due to COVID, so we're making it our mission to bring the showroom to people with ePianosTV here: www.epianos.co.uk/tv/ - Stay in touch BaeGee258, I appreciate your feedback!
Thanks Tom. On a side note, I put a deposit on the CLP-785 this very day. It was over my budget but I have no regret. This video was the turning point for me in my purchase decision. I can't wait to explore the possibilities and attune to the touch and sound of this instrument. I'm so convinced it will give me joy and help me keep the motivation to continue my journey as a piano enthousiast.
@@ePianoscouk thanks for this. Will you be showcasing the kawai ca99?
The best way to sell a piano is to hear it's sound. Love this ! Would listen to this for hours. Really inspiring ! Thanks !
Thank you Sylvie. I totally agree about letting the piano speak for itself. They'll be more videos like this coming soon. Take care now.
Impressive & beautiful all three:
- The piano sound quality
- The tracks you have performed
- The playing skills you have shown
When I was young, at the school I went to, we had several rooms with pianos so you could practice. In free periods I liked to go to these rooms and although I couldn't really play (my main instrument is guitar), from the beginning I loved the sound so much. I later learned piano and got a grand piano, which I had to leave behind with a heavy heart when I moved because of space limitations. Since then I've been looking for a way to make up for that loss. I have watched so many videos, there are really good ones among them, but your video really touched me. You make the soul of the instrument audible. I think that videos like these must of course be about promoting the instrument, but your demonstration goes far beyond that and impressed me very much, especially with its subtle musical approach. Thank you very much - and yes, I will buy the CLP 785.
Probably the best Piano review I found on CZcams, very sincere review and the sound is in the center of intention. Thank you very much, please continue such format !
Thank you Jeremie. I'm glad this format is liked. I'm working on more of the same. Take care.
Excellent presentation. Thanks for posting!
Thank you so much for this amazing review!
Thank you sir for your time and effort to demonstrate such a beautiful instrument like this one, it's really appreciate it.
Both of these sound incredible, but I just can't get over how beautiful and melodic the Bosendorfer comes through. I'm personally fine sacrificing a bit of the gorgeous brightness and clarity from the Yamaha in favour of the inspiring, gentle, and warmth that eludes from the Bosendorfer. But of course for certain songs, the Yahama will be my preferred choice. What an instrument the CLP-785 is. Ordered mine yesterday and can't wait for it to arrive (in 4-6 months). Thank you for this demonstration...beautifully done.
Thanks, Colin. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I have to say, the first thing I do when powering up the CLP785 is switch to the Bosendorfer. It's like chocolate sound.
Really beautifully done review.
Beautiful, thoughtful demo. Thanks so much!
I think I'm sold. For the longest time I was pondering between the 745 and 785. I could get a 745 for christmass but I'll wait until 2021 for a 785. It is worth the wait. I particularly love that you demonstrated both main samples and that you played at variable attacks on the keys. It sounded amazing. I think I prefer this kind of videos to any full reviews.
Thanks Simon. It's so, SO worth it. I really enjoyed my 20 minutes playing the CLP785. It's quite a transcendent experience which you only really get from the top-spec pianos.
I’ve had my 785 for a couple of months now and have absolutely no regrets. If you can afford it, it’s definitely a step above the 745
What about the 775 in-between?
@@grahamatter 775 has heavier action from what I’ve read (80+ grams keys). Meanwhile 785 has a linear graded keys.
Lovely touch Chris, thanks
Thanks Bally 1 - It was a nice way to spend half and hour.
Thanks for lovely demo .
You're most welcome Duncan. The pleasure was all mine! - More coming soon so subscribe yourself up.
Woow, first time seeing you playing a piano!!! and of course you did more than High Advance, thank you so much for this video 😍😍🙏🏼.
Thank you! 😃
I’m going to look at a 785 tomorrow morning. I’ve watched this video a dozen times! You play beautifully! Thank you for the inspiration. You need to record an album! 😀
did you get the 785?
Very nice Chris, beautifully demonstrated. I just wish i had enough room to put it, along with my Genos and SX900.
I'll bring my sledgehammer round Mick and we'll make room!
Well you sold me on the 785. Simply heavenly sound. Also, where can I get that arrangement/transcription of "The Snowman/Walking in the Air"? One of my favorite songs of all time, and your arrangement makes mine look so basic.
Lastly, have you tried the 775? I prefer that form factor and music stand, but I suspect the sound quality of those spruce speaker cones in the 785 takes it to another level.
Amazing play and really focusing on the sound! My partner and me both listened to this in awe. Thanks for this perfect presentation!
Thank you Danielaismusic - I'm so glad this format is liked by so many people. More coming soon, so make sure you subscribe. I also go into more depth about this piano and its benefits on our blog here: www.epianos.co.uk/the-booth-6-yamaha-clp-785-digital-piano/

I just got the CVP 809GP. This CLP 785 sounds incredible too. Maybe I’ll add that to my collection. Thx Chris! Don
The Bösendorfer combined with the strings is amazing.
It sure is. I could literally sit and play that combo all night.
That's my favorite too. Can't wait to also try it with the chorus.
One of the best, if not the best, review on the CLP785, thank you. I played the CLP775 and the key touch is heavier than it's contenders generally, but still loved how it played. I guess the CLP785 would be a step up because of the counterweights.. What I couldn't understand is how such a high end digital piano didn't have key off noise setting, that's one of my favorite effects to hear while playing.. Also, I think you can't fully deactivate the hammer sound, can you? Thanks anyway and keep the nice work up
If you do another video on the CLP 785 and 795gp, I would like to hear more of the upright piano and for future CLPs they should include the P22 and the YUS5. For the middle pedal they should add a muffle sound so it feels like a real upright and a unachorda for the grands. If you can mic the piano speakers that would be nice
Refreshing to see a review where it also focus on the keyboard dynamics rather than the virtuosity of the performer. Great review and just how you would want to try it out for yourself. Thanks
Thanks for those comments Andrew. I'm glad this format seems to be popular. I'll be doing more soon. If there's any particular function/feature/voice that you'd like to see me play just say so. We're making it our mission to 'bring the showroom' out to people as COVID has made visiting a shop so difficult. We've started here: www.epianos.co.uk/tv/
@@ePianoscouk most reviews gloss over piano dynamics and focus more on quality of sound but both equally important. Yours is the first review that’s given any consideration to dynamics and the feel/connection. As you say without the opportunity to try them out your review is priceless. Would like to see one on Dexibell H10
I normaly never react on youtube. But this was Just simply lovely, one of the best reviews/showcase i have seen. Where the instrument is the point of interest, and how it plays, how it sounds and not the salesman or selling it’s fancy gadgets. Thank you for this experience. I would really love to see a booth episode about the Kawai CA99, as i am torn between these two.
Thank you, Nyusha.
Hi Chris. One other question. I like the mellow, deep music you are playing in this video. Are you playing a specific style or musician? I’d like to play this kind of contemplative music and am curious what it is. Thx! Don
Is the sound generation and layering the same in the lower (38-voice) CLP 700 series, or is this kind of expressiveness unique to the 785?
I really love the way you play the piano. Is there a chance to get the music notes of Shenandoah and the long and winding road in your style?
Thank you, Guenter. That's really kind of you. I'm afraid I don't have the music for what I played in this video. I almost always play from memory without music. Sorry!
How do you compare CLP-785 to Kawai CA79 in regards to action and build quality?
Hello from California. Just gorgeous! Thank you so much for your wonderfully heartfelt piano playing. I’m in the market for a digital piano and I will definitely consider the 785.
Thanks jazzlegend - CLP785 is a beauty. Really worth checking out Yamaha AvandGrand NU1x, N1, N2 & N3 too. Careful though, it's easy to fall in love and it gets expensive.

What after using 785 for a long time? Is it worth buying? Is the sound cover strong?
Thank you for this wonderful review. Could you please give me your opinion on the clp-775? Does the action feel much different than the 785? I read a lot of reviews saying the clp-775 action way too heavy. I don’t have an opportunity to try either model where I live. I have had a 775 on order for months now and have no idea when it will be in and I wonder if I mad the right choice. I have played 40+ years but I lost my Yamaha U1 when my house burnt down last summer and need something to play on until I can get another acoustic piano. I would really appreciate your opinion on the 775 if you have the time. Thanks so much!
Theres an online article detailing their experiences on the differences between the 785 and 775. 775 has a heavier action.
Totally astound review. Will you be posting a review of the 795gp soon? Is it worth the extra? Thank you
Thanks. I certainly intent to do a similar video on Yamaha CLP795GP once we're able to. You'll see it first on our ePianosTV website here: www.epianos.co.uk/tv/
@@ePianoscouk greatness!!
Hi, Chris! Thanks for this wonderful review. A question, though: you're obviously wearing headphones, so when you speak of "the sound swirling around the cabinet", aren't you describing the effect of Yamaha's binaural sampling for headphone use? Do you experience the same aural sensation when playing without headphones? TIA!
Good question SeaDrive300. I've been really listening to the video since you've asked this, and I can't hear the distinct effect of the dampners being lifted from the strings and the ghostly echos from the cabinet. This comes over very well when wearing headphones, and is all part of the immersive experience. I will try and capture it in another video for you (so subscribe up). I wonder if using the headphone output will capture it? - I'll report back. What you can hear nicely in the audio is the very rich and textured piano sample which is very representative of the sound I was hearing. I suggest wearing headphones when listening for maximum pleasure! - Take care and thanks for being nice x
@@ePianoscouk Thanks, Chris, more vids on this topic are always greatly appreciated! Here's another way of thinking about this: since (I think) many people are trying to decide between the 745 and the 785 (large price difference between the two), it would be worth knowing what the relative difference is when playing with headphones. The binaural sampling (found in both models) might mitigate the 785's sonic advantages, which mostly stem from its greater power and the spruce cones in the speakers. What do you think?
That's a really good idea SeaDrive300. I've been chatting about this on another comment to this video too. I'm going to take what you've both said and see what I can produce. Thanks for the feedback and giving me some ideas to mull over. Sometimes it's hard to know exactly what people want to hear, so thanks! - Just shout if you can think of anything else that would be helpful. I've got the CLP785 in our video studio right now.
I find the headphone experience is really impressive. Without the headphones, the sound may vary based on the room your are playing in. I may slightly prefer the sound with the headphones, but he playing experience without headphones is still very pleasing.

Two questions: What method or equipment did you use to capture the sound of the piano for this video? (microphone, MIDI, wave audio file recording to USB, or Aux Out?) And has the audio been enhanced or processed in any way using Audacity or some other software?
Hi, Mason. What you hear is the genuine sound of the piano. I simply used a direct audio output from the piano (AUX OUT). Once the audio was in the video editor, it was not enhanced in any way. I hope that helps!
Excellent presentation. Can you tell us the name of the music piece that you start out with?
Thanks Barry. The first pieces I played were improvisations. I probably couldn’t ever play them again, sorry!
Always nice to see when people play the piano with so much soul and passion like you.
But as a proud and very happy owner of an AvantGrand N1X, I suppose that the touch and the feel of the 785 (as good as it may be) is not really comparable with a grand piano hybrid keyboard, is it?
But the sound is really, really marvelllous and I'm very interested what are the main differences between the old and the new CFX-Sample. Is it just the dynamics?
I bet the speaker system on the 785 is far superior to the N1X which is very important. You're not getting the real grand action but then again you're only getting a basic baby grand action on the N1X anyway.
@@markfowlermusic You really think that the speaker system on the 785 is way much better than on the N1x? I can't imagine that.
@@Schmidthorst69 yes it is, the speaker system on the N1X is poor quality I've played it, the higher price you're paying for on the N1X is just for the real grand action, that's where all your money is going, the speaker system is just second to that, you have to pay alot more to get a decent sounding hybrid that's not using a bad speaker system, such as the N2 or N3X.
@@markfowlermusic OK, I took a look on the booklet. You are right: the N1X has 6 x 30 W speaker amplifiers, the 785 has 6 + 50 W speaker amplifiers.
I own the N1X for six months now and I'm very happy with it. I tested a lot hybids before - all the AGs from Yamaha and all the Novus pianos from Kawai.
Actually, my decision was already made for the N2 because it had the best keyboard action and feeling and the best sound. But during the last testing I heard some strange and annoying overtones on some notes. They were so annoying for me that I changed my decision and went for the N1X.
So, I'm very happy with it now (I came from a CLP 545), especially the grand piano action, but I'm still hoping for an N2x coming up in the next years! :)
@@Schmidthorst69 I'm going for the clp785 not N1X as i dont want the future hassle of regulation to the action, as its a real action, also i found it difficult to hear the piano sound details through those speakers, they were muffled and too distant sounding (i know they're meant to be) but they deliberately made the N1X with an ok speaker system... This is because otherwise there would be no reason to buy the higher models - N2 and N3X as they all share the exact same action.
Cute, but there is a problem: strong dynamics were not used here and it could not be demonstrated how the Bösendorfer sound is really bad outside the mp-pp range, and little expressive, even with IAC off, setting which improves the dynamic range.
You guys wouldn't happen to have a CLP-795GP, would you? I would LOVE to hear a comparison between that and the 785! :-)
Totes
The way you play I can tell you played the piano for atleast 30 years. Oh and I have a question, does the piano become boring overtime? Im seeking for a piano that amazes me enough to play it for years. I had the problem with the yamaha ydp 164 wich is incredible for only 1.000 dollars. But 2×20 watt upside-down speakers are pretty quiet and lack of a big round sound. I want to have fun with the piano therefore making practicing easier and more enjoyable. I'm only 3,5 years into playing the piano and already have full control of the piano and being able to improvise or compose something small to just play around and I even got my own pieces wich aren't anything special, but it's a start . I just hope the clp 785 is the one for me because it looks beautiful and sounds like that on the video.
Waiting for a response:)
Dawid
Hi Dawid. Thanks for that very interesting question. I'd say that yes, the piano does become a little boring after playing for years and years, however, the role it has played in my life has become far more important than the simple gratification of improving my standard or learning a new piece of music. The piano has become a kind of therapy. A perfectly mindful activity, if you will, especially when playing nostalgic songs. Even though I'm a player of 30 years plus, as you guessed correctly, I'm mostly _not_ playing my piano, I'm doing other things. Being swept up in the flurry of everyday life. My piano lives alongside me as a constant and very patient companion who is always there for me in difficult times, even though I ignore it and call it 'boring' on CZcams comments! Sometimes, I wish I could make non-players understand the magic of forming such a relationship with a piano or any musical instrument.
I hope that helps.
@chrisonpiano
@@ePianoscouk yes it helped, thanks for the nice response. I think I am going to a nearby piano shop and test out the clp 785. My piano is also there for me at hard times and in the first year of playing I was actually addicted to it, I even got worse at school because all I did was playing piano for atleast 9 hours a day. My first 1,5 years I was self-thaught, i was good but there was a lot lack of technique. Now I have piano lessons with a teacher that really suits me and my playing style.
And I also wish that non-musicians would know what playing piano means to me. Many think i want to impress girls but that's not really my goal. i just want a fun time, and as my teacher said "rather having fun while practicing than trying to practice as hard as possible to get good even faster".
Dawid :)
Tori Amos plays Bösendorfer...awesome device apparently.👍
Tori Amos can sure tickle those keys. What a performer.
one issue the a lot of reviews have when reviewing Yamaha digital pianos , not sure if it is intentional, but when you record, you want to have separate recordings, one for Binaural Samples and one with binaural turned off as if it sounds from the speakers, and PLEASE INDICATE EACH DURING THE VIDEO, since binaural is not an effect available though the speakers. Huge oversight.
You're totally right Jitin. I was discussing this in another comment on here. I'm going to try and capture the full glory of Binaural Sampling for you to hear in a future video, although I suspect that unless you're actually sat at the piano it might not have the same effect. What you hear in the video is still very representative of the quality of the piano though. We are often debating amoungst ourselves here whether it's better to record a direct output for a clean sound, or to use a microphone to pick up the performance of the piano's speakers. After all the speakers and amplifiers are a major feature of the design. In future I think I'll do a seperate video which showcases both - what do you think?
@@ePianoscouk I think it is better to record direct output from Left /right output jacks, to represent the sound of the piano, that is the sound that comes from the speakers, then do recording from headphone jack to indicate binaural samples, then if you want to go the extra mile, include speaker sound via microphone, but the latter is least priority. Only because the speaker quality depends on so many factors, including, room ambience that the piano is, the microphone quality, people/traffic in or out of the building, just too many variables.
Okay. Thanks Jitin. I'm going to do some experiements and see what I can come up with. It sounds quite an interesting video to produce the way you describe. Stay in touch and take care.
@@JitinMisra but the line out recording audio is not what the piano sounds like through the speakers. That's why he mentions using set of mics. These capture the true sound of what it sounds like live. The speakers alter the line out sound massively on many pianos.
The Bosendorfer sound is much improved compared to the clp 685
I have been missing any technical explanations in this review
so much emotional expression, pushing and pulling thru the story telling key strokes. 🙏
