- What is the true origin story for Miles "Tails" Prower? Sonic the Hedgehog games have a vast cast of characters used for high-speed platforming, but what exactly are their origins. After covering Sonic the Hedgehog's many origin stories in Sonic games, comics, and TV shows, I've decided to cover Sonic's best friend: Miles "Tails" Prower. Tails is known for being smart and Sonic's sidekick but where did Tails really come from and how did he meet Sonic!? Let's deep dive into Tails' origin story before Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie comes out next year. Of course, the origin story may change by the time that movie's out so I'll probably have to revisit this video.

In my opinion I think Tails used to be Sonic's Partner not Sonic's Sidekick but it seems like Sega now a days Sega is trying to force Tails into being Sonic's sidekick.
Hoping the movie takes a different stance on this. Tails is the brains behind the operation and the games up to this point have done a great job highlighting that until Sonic Forces. So hopefully the fans feedback on that make Tails a better character in the future! He is indeed a partner
@@TheMentok If, hypothetically, we get adventure 3, I hope it follows the adventure series where Tails is actually powerful.
Adventure 1 is about him learning he can face threats alone, adventure 2, he takes a much more commanding position and is kinda cool, so I hope adventure 3, which will probably not happen, will expand on that.
But I'm pretty sure we won't be getting a continuation to what's pretty much the best 3d sonic games.

Tail's character development in Sonic X is great. I like how Eggman comes to acknowledge Tail's as a worthy adversary on his own.

Technically, Tails didn't independently LEARN how to use his tails to fly. Tail's taught Sonic the spindash (Which could be proven because Sonic didn't spindash in CD [Which, in cannon, happened before Sonic 2] like he does in later games) and in return, Sonic gave him the idea of using his twin-tails to fly
But Sonic _can_ spindash in CD. Hell, I forgot the peel-out existed until your comment made me look up his CD moveset.

Tail's arc in Sonic X left a huge impact on me. It was the first time I cried during a cartoon as a kid.
One of the most underrated things about Sonic Adventure 1 is the alternate dialogue that plays out in shared scenes between stories.
Sonic and Tails share a lot of scenes in their stories with Eggman, and it's really great how in Sonic's story, Eggman's lines make him seem like a joke. But in Tails' story, the dialogue and tone used is much more threatening. It highlights each character's perspective of the same situation. To Sonic, Eggman is not a threat. But to Tails? Eggman is a scary villain. Which was perfect for Tails' story about overcoming his dependence on Sonic and facing Eggman by himself.
My man finally digging into the Archie comic. Honestly I could do a video in the future just saying 50% true things that happened and 50% making shit up on the fly and it wouldn’t matter because everyone except die hard Archie Sonic fans wouldn’t be able to tell if any of it was real or not. Actually, feel free to steal that idea lmao

I love these character origin deep dives. Because I get to look at all the old Japanese flavor text in the manual that Sega never thought would amount to much 😂 And the comics are just wild so that’s a plus too. Good to see you still around man!

I think I figured out why Tails breaks down in fear when attacked by Chaos, unprepared in the one cutscene in Sonic Forces.
Ever since Sonic 2, Tails and Sonic have been friends for decades, with Tails’ courage and bravery coming from Sonic’s emotional support. When Sonic gets knocked out cold by Infinite and co., Tails of course assumes Sonic died from all the blows he took. This of course caused Tails’ bravery to completely shatter, as his best friend and partner in heroism is no longer there to give Tails the emotional support he needs to put on a brave face, this being the the reason why Tails ducks down like a coward when attacked by Chaos, unprepared. Of course, when Classic Sonic saves Modern Tails from the water-and-chaos-energy-composed being the Classic Sonic hasn’t even met before, Tails regains most of that bravery. And when Tails found out that [Modern] Sonic was alive and well, he finally regains the rest of his bravery.
Except this ignores adventure 2s story where tails takes command once he thinks sonic dies. Tails can take care of himself without sonic.
@@Lord_Drogothag ngl, I’m not really a Sonic fan, and it was on Christmas 2021 when I started playing Sonic games. And I don’t have the vast majority of consoles needed to be able to play ALL of the games, so I didn’t play SA2.
Btw do you think Sega intended character development for Tails in Forces? I found it odd how it seemed like Classic Sonic felt like a little brother figure to Tails. Even if Tails isn't on the front lines he still gave him most of the orders and even seem to say he had trust in him here and there, through out the game. My theory gets even more possible when Tails cries when he leaves and when modern Sonic says "Cheer Up Tails, I'm sure we'll see him again!" I feel like Classic Sonic was supposed to develop his character and he honestly felt like a sidekick to modern Tails to a degree in my opinion at least, though I could be wrong this being a theory and all. What do you think about this?
Am I the only one who is noticing this? The bad writing makes it hard to spot and most people think Tails is just being the voice to Classic but I think it's deeper then just that.
This makes sense because Tails is supposed to be coping with depression through out the game and he even starts doing things more without Sonic later in the game.
I never grew on the sonic series, but I immediately saw Tails as my favourite.
The Sonic X ending is just perfect, even though it would be nice to have a 4th season maybe telling the events of Sonic 06 or Unleashed, it was good that it ended like that, making all characters evolve until the best versions of themselves

According to the new first episode of "Tails Tube" (found on the official Sonic The Hedgehog CZcams channel), Tails is confirmed to be from west side island (stated by Tails themselves).

I personally thought that in Forces Tails kinda regressed when sonic was thought to be dead. Not only that but he was caught by a copy of chaos and was totally unprepared for such an encounter to occur
And he never faced Chaos alone, remember.
Yes, you fought him alone if you played as Tails in Sonic Adventure --- but that was only because they didn't want to program Sonic to follow Tails for a single boss fight. Going by the full story we see, it seems Sonic, Tails and Knuckles together took on Chaos-4.
What's more, that was Tails's only fight with him! His other two boss fights were against Dr. Eggman.

@@Harkz0r presumably because Prower doesn’t look like it’s pronounced ‘per hour’, it looks like it’s pronounced ‘prow-er’; you wouldn’t say the front of a ship is called the ‘per ow’, so it’s not unreasonable to think the same with Prower. If you’re not expecting his name to be a pun in the first place you wouldn’t make the leap of logic to work it out. 🤷🏻♂️
I grew up in the UK watching "The adventures of sonic the hedgehog" VHS tapes, so for me I like the origin story you talk about at 4:59 haha :)
If you read the book Console Wars by J Blake Harris they actually talk about Tails` back story. Although not cannon, the back story is actually the reason he goes by Miles "Tails" Prower. SEGA of Japan and SEGA of America clashed A LOT in the 90s, and SEGA of Japan insisted that the new character be named Miles Prower. SEGA of America hated it, thinking it was a terrible pun and wanted to call him tails. They settled this dispute by writing an origin story. The story was read to the heads of SEGA, and they reached a compromise. The characters real name was to be Miles Prower and would go by the nickname Tails. It made both parties happy and made the pun less noticeable. This is all confirmable!
I've always wondered if the whole tails hating his real name in the 90s cartoon was a nod to this.

Aww man, this was great! I was really looking for a nice foundation to get a good idea of the little floof’s origins and this was definitely it. Imo, he’s always going to be my favourite because something about his character seems to align more with emotional and mental maturing, than physical. It makes the series more complex to have this little oddball so close to the main. Especially with his brains and intellect- being the right hand man so young is an amazing feat.

As one of the only fans of sonic forces I know there are quite a few flaws with the game but you also have to keep in mind that tails has done almost everything with sonic and only had like one adventure on his own and he basically went insane during that time where sonic was being tortured

Except you forgot one MAJOR FACTOID: Miles was originally designed and drawn to be "female" and sonics eventual love interest, this idea however was redacted LITERALLY DAYS before the first issue of archie comics which meant the artists had to go back and de-feminise the fox PLUS rewrite all his lines in a VERY SHORT period of time.

Okay, here's the scoop. Tails was originally designed as the very male Miles Prower the Tanuki by Yasushi "Judy" Yamaguchi in a company-wide "create Sonic's sidekick" contest (at the moment, the only other known entry was a turtle named Boomer, but that's neither here nor there). The character won the contest, but Sega realized a flying one-tailed tanuki would be considered ripping off Super Mario Bros. 3, so they asked Yamaguchi-san to change his species.
Miss Yamaguchi decided to go for the rival species of tanuki, Kitsune, and designed an orange fox with two tails, but kept his facial features the same, thus Miles Prower as we saw him in Sonic 2 was born.
However, this isn't the end! Sega had wanted to name the fox with the more marketable name "Tails the Fox", but Yamaguchi-san was insistant - so Sega came up with a comprimise. His legal name would be Miles Prower, but his nickname would be Tails, thus creating the character we know today.
TL;DR Tails was never meant to be female, this was a rumor created either based on the Love Song for an ending theme (ALl of Dreams Come True's songs were love songs, however) and/or from the Spanish Translation of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog referring to Tails as a female several times.

I feel you on the Sonic comics, I wanted to get into them but like, no way in hell would I be able to catch up with over 300 issues like, nah man I have other things to do in my lifetime.
