This video is going into my ”favorite videos of all time” folder! Such a wholesome retrospective! Looking forward to that digimon video and some more yugioh content
Hopefully Discotek Media will release Yu-gi-oh season 0 on blu-ray standard definition with English subtitle for the first time as well as the rest Yu-gi-oh series.
I agree with all your points regarding how the characters were back in the beginning of the story which wasn’t about card games. If I’m completely honest, it was way better when it was more into the horror aspect of the games, Takahashi-sensei wanted this series to be a horror story at the beginning but had to change the story to fit the card game theme because it was more popular than the rest of the chapters and his manga was close to being cancelled if he didn’t. P/S: Kaiba’s name is supposed to be pronounced “Ka-ee-ba” not “Ka-yaa-ba” 👀.
The ending of GX, which was never localized, actually gets pretty dark. But yeah season 0 and the manga had such a unique tone, it's a shame we didn't get more of that in the anime.
I should have been more specific lol. By kids I just meant anyone under 18, which is the target audience. I'm an adult though and I still love both series
Wow a video about the first 7 volumes about the manga rather than just Toie's louse adaptation of them. And good to see someone point out what the actual themes of Yugioh are (its especially always interesting to think about how YuGiOh unlike so many other big licenses that have a highly popular after it titled game/toy series that this one become one as response to its popularity rather than started as one to sell it) Also to be fair towards Yugi in his duel against Imori he wasn't given the full rules as such didn't he know about 2 of each of the element relationships.
Yeah I love the Toei anime, but it's definitely not manga accurate. Yugi is actually pretty good at games, it's just often overshadowed by the fact his opponents are always cheating so he needs Yami's help
@@CoreVizion I also don't have an issue with the Toei anime but it is kinda weird to me how people so often sight it rather than the actual manga given that that one actually has an official localization. Yes Yugi is really good. Actually this brings me to one of the reasons why I'm not a fan of the split between the first 7 volumes and the rest of the series a lot of people due as it usually leads to the Dungeon Dice Monsters chapter being entirely overlooked when this was Yugi's first own high stakes win.
@@rynobehnke8289 It's specifically because of the common misconception that the Toei anime is somehow manga accurate.(When that's nonsense when most of it is either heavily altered or straight up made up.) Like, the fanterm "Season 0"(Standing for "The season before what is considered the official start, because we need to give it a qualifier due to the "Duel Monsters"-name not being particularly ingrained in western fanculture yet") is specifically a series-centric term that somehow managed to crawl its way back to the source material even though that does not make sense. It should also be noted that the official localization is kind of a curse. These first few chapters are presumably pretty well localized, but it is eclipsed by reports of how the vast majority of the manga is really inconsistent and for some reason dubnamed Pegasus. A portion of people wanting to read the manga would possibly be scared off with the thought "I'll probably wait until there is a better translation"...and then there just never was a better translation because most people gave up scanlating because of the pressure of (illegally) competing with the official release and the fact that it's not a particularly short manga either.
@@lpfan4491 Yes way to many people do seem to think that the Toei anime is manga accurate (at most do they know that Miho's role was enlarged but even than do not many realized just by how much) I mean I get why is often refereed to as season 0 as it does technically adapt the parts of the manga that the Second anime skipped. But yes very different still especially as the second anime made its own nano-adaptions of Shadi's introduction, Monster World RPG with Bakura and Death-T finally. Never knew that the English localization is apparently so weird. I did use the German localization and that one seem fine (minus card names as Konami enforced the use of there actual TCG names which them self are based on the censored/altered names from America)
While I do agree with your video for the most part, you got one thing wrong. The straw hats are not terrorists they're anarchists. they rebel directly against the government that is not the same as terrorism where you insight panic and fear.
I think terrorism is one of those words where it depends on perspective. From the perspective of the government, any rebel group is terrorist. But I agree that isn't actually their goal. Probably more nuanced than I could have gotten into with a quick throwaway line
@@CoreVizionthis was definitely decades ago I don’t remember any more of it just specifically that kid. Maybe it was in shonen jump or something and I only got to read a bit of it
Think Season 0 will finally be dubbed? It would be a fitting tribute to Kazuki Takahashi. And as a bonus, have Dan Green, Eric Stuart, Wayne Grayson, etc. in the dub.
I wish one day Yugioh as a whole got the Brotherhood treatment. And they should absolutely bring back the classic voice actors. Can't imagine it any other way
meh. I prefer the duelist kingdom version by quite a lot. season 0 is ok, but overrated because it's seen as this secret original version that isn't censored. it's honestly just as convoluted as yugioh, but in worse ways most of the time. not to mention the animation is way better in duelist kingdom.
The anime version of the first seven volumes/season 0 does change and make up stuff that wasn't in the original manga making it a bit of a messy adaption, but I wouldn't say its convoluted at all, it's very straightforward since it's a villain of the week show as opposed to the card battle series that came after. What people mean by calling this part of the franchise the "original version" is that it was what Kazuki Takahashi originally intended the series to be, a showcase/celebration of different games since that's what he was passionate about. You can actually still see that in Duelist Kingdom because there was no rules yet and the cards are played like a board game with terrain effects and stuff. I'd recommend the manga if you didn't like the anime version of Season 0 that much. Personally I enjoy Season 0's artstyle since I love old shows animated with cels as opposed to the digital stuff that came later.
@@sigiligus The only thing braindead is your ad hominem reply. Season 0 is not this widely beloved or cult following anime. You won’t find it on top of myanimelist or top 10s. It doesn’t have a trove of hidden gem music. You don’t know what contrarian even means. It is more of a psuedointellectual thing to pretend it’s this popular thing or cult hidden gem. Me and my friends grew up with yugioh and I had a conversation with them and we all found different issues with season 0. It’s a silly and edgy show that has more convoluted plot points than season 1 with poor animation and music. Most of the redeeming aspects of season 0 were incorporated into season 1 anyway.
Honestly, now that I've read the manga in its entirety, I feel like that's the definitive way to experience the story. When you read the first 7 volumes, and get all the build up and character intros, that makes it feel much more cohesive when duelist kingdom starts and the series switches gears to being centered around duel monsters. Like you can see how we got to this point and why it matters
4:54 love this "season 0" style angle. Yugi's hair looked cooler back then, before it got more standardized.
Season 0 Yugi rocks
Dark Yugi is like a Gaurdian of Shadow
All are not permanent, showing that the Pharoah can be forgiving, but only if they understand what they did wrong

I want that so bad
Until then, season 0 is on YT, and you can use close captions.
I've seen so many videos talking about this exact subject, but it's a more compelling argument each and every time i hear about how good it is. 👍
Miho (the blue-haired girl) gets a reference in Duel Links.
But she only appears in one chapter of the manga.
When and how is she referenced in duel links?
Other than the Duel Monsters card game I loved the Dragon Cards, Monster World and Game show games

this was an awesome video, you just gained a new sub. i'm looking forward to more videos and hope they gain a lot more views cause you deserve it.
This was very enjoyable, added a like 👍

Great video
Don't forget to mention Dark Yugi's voice is Megumi Ogata (Sailor Uranus)
She also voices Shinji in Evangelion
Bro ur gonna get attacked for saying one piece and demon slayer are targeted towards kids lol
I mean I think he uses the definition of kids that includes edgy teens that so desperately want to be seen as mature.

Last I checked was the entire Yugioh manga given a English release.
Yeah, it can be gotten through the Yu-Gi-Oh! 3-in-1s. They're frequently out of stock, so it can be hard to get ahold of sometimes.

kaiba is a perfect anti-hero. pegasus and marik are better villains than kaiba. imagine duel monsters without relinquished bruh
I can because after Pegasus, Relinquished is never seen again.
