    THANK YOU, SIR!!! - my wife's 2004 Explorer hadn't been started since February (CV-19, y'know); replaced battery but car stuck in limp home mode, codes P211/2112 (throttle actuator stuck open/closed). A thorough cleaning per your clear instructions and it runs like normal. Cost=$0.00; already had cleaners and scrubbier.

    The difference that doing a throttle body adaptation can make is amazing! In SA we have a lot of Mk3 Golfs/Jettas and "Citi Golfs" that use the Bosch MP9 EFI system. The TB's get gummed up and the stepper motor struggles more and more to stabilise idle- a good clean and adaptation (channel 098 on a Launch scan tool) and you're good to go! Even works on getting a car with a 268,272,276 degree cam to idle "properly".

    IMPORTANT! If your throttle body is an electric one, don't force open the butterfly as you may break the spring inside. Also the adaptation without vcds or vagcom might work, but always check on a forum of your car on how-to do it properly, as if you aren't prepared it's cost more than let a mechanic clean it for you

    • @final0222

    Some manufacturers don't want you spraying the cleaner directly in the TB because they have special grease on the shaft that can be washed out. Spraying on a rag and wiping it is the preferred method. Also a lot of them have special coatings that can be removed by some harsh cleaners. I'm not sure the scotch brite would be good to use on something like that so be sure and check your service data before cleaning. Lastly, some vehicles it is impossible to readapt the TB learn values without an expensive bidirectional scan tool (like VCDS.) You can end up with some wierd stuff going on with idle. Honda, for example, will not learn the idle without the bidirectional scan tool.

    • @sony12345111
      @sony12345111 Před 5 lety +2

      Actually a way around that with Honda is doing a ECM relearn by disconnecting the battery ends and touching then together for 15-30 mins. That forces the car to relearn everything.

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 Před 5 lety +4

      @@sony12345111 Nope. That does not reset the PCM, nor does it clear the TP data necessary to do an idle relearn. Been there done that and it doesn't work. I've tried it. I can say that definitively on an 08 Odyssey 3.5L V6. It clears all the stored codes and may clear some other data I'm not aware of but not the TP data.

    • @sony12345111
      @sony12345111 Před 5 lety +3

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 Před 5 lety +1

      @@sony12345111 Yeah, when I finally got the scan tool that would do the job it has a data PID that allows you to see the status of the idle relearn. Disconnecting the battery and holding the terminals together would not put that PID into "learning." It stayed at complete. Only a "PCM Reset" or "Clear TP data" would change it from "complete" to "learning," followed by "complete" after about 10-15 mins of idle with no loads on.

    • @johnaclark1
      @johnaclark1 Před 5 lety +1

      @@TheRobertChannel It's not false information. I have an 08 Odyssey that would NOT relearn the idle until the TP data was cleared with the scan tool. The idle learn PID stayed at "complete" until I reset with the tool and it then changed to "Learning" and then 10 minutes or so of idling changed to "complete" and was fixed. I tried your method. It didn't work. Trust me, I tried everything and ended up having to buy a bidirectional scan tool. Once I cleared the TP data all worked well.

      Maybe use a plastic "brillo" pad version to do the scrubbing to avoid scratching off the coating. Let it soak for a bit longer and scrub a bit longer.
      Recommend this be done on cooking pots and pans, too. Keeps residual metal from being ingested and keeps the pans in better shape so they last longer.

      Use a plastic woven dish scrubber instead of the green scour pads. Let the chemical sit for a little longer and scrub a little longer. @sabercatpuck Před 2 lety +1

      If the engine load % falls off the PCM can command lower line pressure in the transmission, the 3.4 and 3.8 GM's are known to have issues with this, even had a TSB put out, especially talking about the MAF but I don't see why a throttle body problem couldn't cause a similar issue.

    Btw electrical contact cleaner works just as good. Probably safer on plastics too.

    • @GymChess
      @GymChess Před 2 lety +1

      Thats what I used. I didn't even remove the throttle body and just sprayed blindly all over it since I couldn't see what it looked like inside anyway. I noticed that there was a difference in how the car responded. One can also repeat the process at a later point though. Of course the best is to just remove it all together but if it involves reprogramming it and getting a new gasket if not available, it's better to avoid it.

    Always use tb cleaner and clean towels, qtips.
    Do not use straight carb cleaner as it can destroy certain plastics.
    You can spray the intake opening down too.

    Great video. Just got done on my Honda. Really easy maintenance. I disconnected the battery. Took it off completely so that I can do the backside. It was extremely dirty. I bought the car secondhand. Looks as if this has never been done. Lost a little coolant. But that was ok.
    Now how does the relearn process process goes on a Honda ?

    • @metzmatu8409
      @metzmatu8409 Před 3 lety +5

      Perform a Honda throttle body relearn
      Reinstall the Honda throttle body using a new gasket and torque to specifications. Now that the carbon buildup is gone, you must “teach” the computer where the fully closed position is. This is called a Honda throttle body relearn or Honda throttle body reset.
      Shops perform a Honda throttle body reset with a scan tool, but you can perform it manually by following this procedure:
      1) Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for 2-seconds. Do not start the engine.
      2) Start the engine and run it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fans come on.
      3) Then let the ending idle for five minutes with no loads (lights, heated seats, rear defogger, blower motor, radio, etc OFF)
      4) After five minutes, shut off the engine.

  • @tellyfuxnbeast
    @tellyfuxnbeast Před 5 lety +5

    Another method to re learn your idol..
    Start the car and let it get up to operating temperature
    Press your emergency brake in.
    Pressed the brake paddle And put your car and drive. Keep your foot on the brake..
    Let the car idle for atleast one minute and then turn on the AC and let idle for atleast 1 minute
    Final release the E brake and take it for a quick drive so it will re learn the way you drive
    Done!!!💪

      The Throttle Body Relearn Procedure for 5th Gen camaro is much simpler: Idle for 3 mins, then turn off car for 1 min, then idle again for 3 mins. If it's still not idling correctly, take it for a spin at 44+ mph and then let it idle again. Voila.

Sorry for my ignorance I know nothing about mechanic work. But mine is just wants to take off I cleaned the throttle body and know I try to come to a red light and all it wants to do is take off fast or jump like all accelerated it’s weird. Great video...You approach the technical side and the common sense side very well.. Now I won't go and spray dirt from the throttle body into the engine . I'll just spray some on a cloth or shop towel and clean by hand. I don't suspect this particular car has a very dirty throttle body. Looks like I'll soon find out.

    Toyotas just disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Itl forget everything. All the throttle and adjusted fuel mapping are reset, which is totally annoying cuz after disconnecting the battery its totally not uncommon for a vehicle to run rough or even stall for like a day as the computer relearns and adapts.

    • @carnage50x
      @carnage50x Před 5 lety +1

      trollaphobic most Toyotas have a capacitor in the computer to store power for a minute or so. if you change the battery quickly it'll still remember. I've done it a few times on multiple Toyotas.

    Our family car is a 2015 holden commodore sv6 wagon. Yesterday we took it to the mechanic because the RPM was quite low (around 500, should be 750-1000) and it stalled a few times. I did some research and it said a vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body were the two most common causes of this issue and I was right! the mechanic said it was the throttle body so he gave it a clean and the car is back to normal!
