Colin Powell introduces Best Picture nominee Saving Private Ryan at the 71st Academy Awards. Featuring Jack Valenti. Watch more of the 1999 Oscars: • 1999 Oscars
I watched saving private ryan, & I am a nam-era vet. My father was ww11. I am also from Hawaii. Remember December 7, 1941. We were fighting the axis power's. japan attacked us. America, wanted no war. America tried to avoid it. America, was fighting, 2 front's. One from the European theatre, and the pacific theatre. Their, are many war movie's, but, being that I served, can you, or any of you people, tell me different. Understand one thing, war/like battles are not nice. Loo, around you, like Iraq, afganistan, north korea, syria, a lot is going on. Even with Russia, & china. The shit, is hitting the fan, ladies & gentlemen. My son is a marine/constantly deployed on NATO missions.
Watching this video reminds me of when I was in the ARMY years ago that when on my 1st duty station I was stationed in South Korea, and I remember that when we were listening to a sergeant about what to do and what not to do, my name was called, and I responded, and was told to go to the back and wait, it was Staff sergeant WalterRhea,it was my 1st letter of recommendation from the commanding GENERAL RICHARD STILLWELL, then in GERMANY on a NATO exercise, I received my 2nd letter of recommendation from General Jones, from Fort hood 3rd Armour DIVISION, Texas, and I know that my father talked to my 2 brothers about me,how does a cook get 2 letters from 2 4 star commanding GENERALS, and to this day that I don't think about that, but I have learned just to accept it, to make the UNITED States, United States ARMY, The state of HAWAII, and my family, PROUD, proud to be an AMERICAN. 4TH GENERATION, COMING FROM CHINA, TO HAWAII ,AND TO THE 442,JAPANESE AMERICANS, look into history if you don't believe me, fact it's true.
The Thin Red Line was probably as great as Saving Private Ryan....but for different reasons. The Thin Red Line represents a much more psychological aspect of war...one which most Americans have no scale of measurement. Granted, Saving Private Ryan is far more visually compelling however, the aftermath of those battles is something that Saving Private Ryan does not even address but which The Thin Red Line nails precisely.
@Ron Lewenberg Well, she was wrong about that. He would have won the Democratic party nomination by acclimation. That he would have defeated Bush seems very likely.
Fuck Colin Powell!!! He’s a war criminal. Norman Schwarzkopf would’ve kicked his ass for lying to the UN Security Council in February 2003. Just so George Bush could have his war in Iraq. The bastard!!
Andrew Cogger no if you knew your history you would know that without British help (arctic convoys takong them supplies, planes and weapons) Russia would have been in trouble. Why don't you "fuck outta here".
Nobody ever said the US were the only ones that fought in the war u idiot. It isn’t a history lesson.. Both of these movies are American-made movies that portray Americans in an award show that takes place in America. Get your sensitive conscious ass out of here moron
No justice in the world when Saving Private Ryan lost to freakin' Shakespeare in Love. Gimme a break.
Points Exactly 😢
One of these two movies should have one best picture not freaking Shakespeare in Love
Sorry, but, no, they got it right. All very good, but "Shakespeare in Love" is pure genius.
Your fucking insane. Nor even close moron !
Larry Brown - Thanks for this funny comment this morning - I laughed out loud! :-)
SPR had some great music , and the Omaha beach scene is still unparalleled, but a mediocre film full of cliches, for all that.
Saving Private Ryan should have won. Period!
3:18 Spielberg is not happy
Lol I wonder what he was thinking
For an instant, I thought nominee was going to be presented by Darth Vader.....
Samuel Gaona Or Mufasa. XD
He did.
Dispense with the pleasantries, Commander…
Rip General .. To you and our troops lost Salute ✊🇺🇲
everytime I see that thumbnail I think it's James Earl Jones
I worked for him and he is a hero of mine.
🤣
What scenes did they show for saving private ryan?
Its 1999 and 2 nerds are about to launch something called Google....

Thin Red Line deserved an Oscar. Shame that it didn’t come out a year later so that it had a shot.
In this video many people don't know that GENERAL POWEL was from HARLEM and I just stumbled on that fact
For some reason, I find it funny that the real national army general and minister of defense is presenting a Hollywood movie.
And this invented war goes to...
❤️❤️❤️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Colin Powell would have made a good president .
He bailed out of that being remotely possible for him stating some personal reasons.
@@johnf.kennedy7339 Allegedly, his wife said no.
Yahul Wagoni Recall him saying no for his wife.
......And The Thin Red Line?
Wasn't as popular as SPV
That movie sucks

Why didn't Powell run for president?
@Ron Lewenberg why did she think that?
@Ron Lewenberg makes sense
@Ron Lewenberg This is what I have read.
@Ron Lewenberg Well, she was wrong about that. He would have won the Democratic party nomination by acclimation. That he would have defeated Bush seems very likely.

Valenti is still alive, wow he’s been around he was appointed by LBJ
He died in 2007.
Colin Powell should have been our first black president

No standing ovation for the General of the US Army. This shows you the respect Hollywood has for our troops.
Steven Koppell Well no kidding
At this point in his life Colin Powell was a businessman and not the General of the Army. Try again Stevie.
Steven Koppell , the troops are a waste !!!!!!
well consider the source on its ass! very few veterans in that crowd I think
Typical selfish Americans. Dont even salute to their own, imagine there was a oil barrel marching to the podium.
are we forgetting somrthing here.... britain stood alone for over 2 years and fought on to the end it wasnt just america that fought the war !!??
without america entering the war, britain would have lost
Not necessarily Andrew cogger, Russia was involved as well, it wasn't all about the USA, get over yourself.
russia wasnt sa ving britain, fuck outta here
Andrew Cogger no if you knew your history you would know that without British help (arctic convoys takong them supplies, planes and weapons) Russia would have been in trouble. Why don't you "fuck outta here".

After this, I stopped watching “The Academy Awards.”

They should have had Captain Dale Dye or Gunny R. Lee Ermey. Not this war monger.
Sorry, but Powell s 10 times the man you or I will ever be.
@@stevec.9713 perhaps but compared to Captain Dye and the Gunny he's a speck.
terrible... the moral low point of the show
War Criminal....
No. He killed alot of Muslim Arabs. That's good social hygiene.
God, I wish he had been our first black president. Not Barry the social orginizer.
Propaganda
A war criminal offering a prize at a propaganda show for a film about men who fought and died for a real cause. Can anyone else see the lunacy here?
