  • As Ireland prepares to vote in Saturday's general election, polls suggest a groundswell of support for Sinn Féin.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
The left-wing nationalist party is leading popularity polls for the first time ever - and its leader Mary Lou McDonald will now take part in tonight's leaders' election debate on TV. The party's signature demand is a United Ireland - but is that the issue that is shifting the country's political landscape? and what does it mean for the future of the UK?

The DUP have equal links to past Loyalist terrorism as Sinn Fein has to past Republican terrorism. Yet no one in the MSM on either side of the Irish Sea uttered even a whimper of outrage when the DUP was asked to form a coalition government with the Tories.

No where near as organised? The loyalist terrorist groups were backed by both the British army and the British government.. seems pretty organised to me.
You write "elected prime minister" as if that person being "elected" made them more important.. ever ask yourself why the IRA attacked the British? Do you know the history of Irish people fighting the British for Irish Independence? Do you know the history of the North of Ireland being annexed by Britain (exactly like the Russia - Ukraine annexation), do you know the history of Irish people being treated as second class citizens in the north of Ireland, a position back by the British government. Of course you don't know this history, you are British and all you learn about is how great the empire was and none of the misery the empire subjected the world to. Go ask India/ Pakistan how good the empire was.

Paul Quinn was beaten to death by a 12-strong IRA gang with iron bars and nail-studded cudgels in a border barn.
His mother Breege said last night: "I'm calling on Conor Murphy to withdraw his disgraceful slur against Paul. My son was not a criminal. The Irish Government, the SDLP, and everybody who knew him testified to that. We also want Conor to go to the police and tell them who he spoke to in the IRA about Paul's murder.parents of IRA murder victim Paul Quinn have called on another Sinn Fein minister to withdraw his "disgraceful slur" against their son. After the 2007 killing, Conor Murphy said he had spoken to the IRA and was satisfied it wasn't involved. He linked the killing to a feud among criminals.
Both the Quinns and the McCartneys urged the DUP to back their calls. They said the party had in recent times actively supported their campaigns for justice and they now expected it to exert pressure on Sinn Fein.
Robert McCartney's sister Catherine said: "Robert's murder is not a historic case where the people involved are dead and it's hard to obtain information.
"Except for Jock Davison, everybody central to events that night is alive. Deirdre Hargey needs to voluntarily go to police and make and sign a statement."
The Communities Minister has previously said she was never asked to make a statement to detectives. Ms McCartney said: "She shouldn't need to be asked. She should just automatically go herself. As a political representative, and especially now as Communities Minister, she should be bending over backwards to help victims' families. We expect Sinn Fein to treat us the same way as they would treat victims killed by loyalists or the state. Robert was a member of Deirdre's local community who went for a drink in a bar and was murdered. We want to sit down with Deirdre and ask her what exactly she saw and didn't see that night in Magennis' - where she sat, if she saw Robert, if she saw Jock Davison.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are both born from Sinn Fein and the IRA, one was pro treaty Sinn Fein/IRA and assisted by the British government defeated the anti treaty side of Sinn Fein/IRA so the hypocrisy is pretty laughable, the only difference being Fine Gael sold out the Irish living in 6 in of the 9 Ulster counties very quickly for power whilst Fianna Fail deserted them a decade longer and both gave themselves new names as both had given up the core belief of the Easter Proclamation, a 32 county United Ireland. When Southern politicians go on about atrocities they try to rewrite history, as what the IRA did in 1916 to 1922 was no different, it was more dated but it was still what is known today as Asymmetric Warfare. Finn Gael's military wing chained prisoners together attached to land mines and blew them up without trial. The war of independence is full of atrocities and the civil war was worse so its rich to hear bullshit. More time has passed since the PIRA killed anyone than when both major southern parties went into power. Hypocrisy perhaps.

Sinn Féin are driven by one goal - a united Ireland - and have no time for the fantasies that underpin Brexit. They have moved from being Eurosceptic to being 'Euro Questioning' (don't ask) since they backed the wrong horse during the Lisbon II referendum, and being in power on both sides of the border is their wet dream. In order to achieve this, they needed to tone down their rhetoric on the EU so they could be electable in the Republic. They have not run enough candidates to form a government on their own, so they may opt to go into opposition with a view sweeping into power in a future election.

I am not party political, I trust none of them, but surely Sinn Féin has its greatest ever opportunity to offer change since forming our first government.
Successive governments have enabled the banks to ruin a once proud nation, one of very few to have won their independence from the British empire and forge our own way as an independent state. But now there is an opportunity for us to follow Britain from the shark-infested waters of the EC, and make for the shores of self-determination with our former foes. Instead, we can live and let live, we can forge ahead with the power of forgiveness, and make a new future, a symbiotic partnership with Britain as our trade partners - a formidable economic force amidst a weakening EC.
Give the people a voice. Give the people a party to turn to - for those that want out of the EC and the Eurozone. The road to recovery is not a mystical one- to re-issue the Punt, pay off our debts, rebuild our country and shed the bank's shackles from the nation's limbs. You cannot control and build a nation unless you control its currency. Economics 101. It's a simple message but I do not see it being spread anywhere. No one is offering that option of self-determination ... Ourselves alone, where is it?
Instead of saying "We warned you about the Euro ...we told you so ..." put the words front and center in your manifesto, and let that manifesto be known - fill the rift in the national psyche with the words "Save Ireland. Bring back the Punt."
We must take back our waters, not to be content with our 20% fish quotas - waters we could protect with Britain by our side - and build processing plants to process the fish we harvest from our own waters. How is it we are not rich from the bounty provided to us by nature herself? The 20% of fish we do take, is immediately packed in ice and shipped out of the country, no value added.
Let people rally to the call, as all of these political parties that have sold us out to the banks fall to the wayside, one by one. Let Sinn Féin be the beacon for those who are lost and light the way forward for Ireland. They could take power in a landslide if they
just put options on the table to govern ourselves in tandem with a healthy trade atmosphere alongside Britain. And if she can do it, then Hello Mary Lou!
"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning."
    -Henry Ford

“If Americans ever allow banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children will wake up homeless”
    - Thomas Jefferson
"Give me control of a nation's money and I care not who makes her laws."
    - Mayer Amschel Rothschild
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. Already they have raised up a monied aristocracy that has set the government at defiance. The
issuing power (of money) should be taken away from the banks and restored to the people to whom it properly belongs."

There are also anniversaries from 1977 and 1988, and Reginald Williamson, a 46 year-old father of two who was killed in 1993. The girlfriend of the off-duty RUC member was driving behind him in a separate car after a night out together. She described the effects of the under-car bomb going off. A bang, a scream, and then, as she ran over to her boyfriend, the first fruit of the IRA’s labours: ‘I looked down and his legs were gone Aside from families, friends and this sombre account, few people remember these dead. Few joined the ranks of famous victims who emerged from larger, or state-caused, atrocities. The families rarely got any apology out of the IRA greater than Sorry our car bomb went off early, or in the wrong street. Sinn Fein the political party is to this day still overseen by the army council of the IRA. Meaning that the next Irish government could be led by the only party for miles or decades around that comes with all the advantages that can be accrued in a democracy from having your own armed assassination gang.Perhaps this is what history always feels like. Politicians lie to gain power. Memories fade. As the On This Day account reminds us people get away with murder. But Sinn Fein’s success is a reminder also of one of the great mysteries of Ireland, both North and South: how a people famous for remembering everything can have forgotten so much.

Sinn Fein's rise akin to that of Nazis in 1930s and is a threat to democracy on this Island. It was written after the Irish general election, the results of which, I said reminded many of us who know Sinn Fein as puppets of the IRA army council, of events in Germany in 1932 which led to Hitler becoming chancellor. There was lots of the usual Shinner abuse on Twitter and much self righteous posturing about my use of the word Nazi. slandering comparison with the Nazis was pure bigotry and had breached the code on discrimination and accuracy, as it insights I guess the complainant meant incites hatred and compounds fears towards a specific political party.

Linking Sinn Féin to its historical ties to the IRA, over 2 decades ago, is ridiculous. It’s like calling the Conservative Party Jacobites, the Labour Party Marxists or the SNP Tories. The DUP have both historical and ongoing links to terrorist and paramilitary groups, and you hear nothing about it.
Sinn Féin support a better healthcare system, education system, progressive tax, social liberalism and from what I can see as an outsider, appear to be holding up to their political promises and stances, unlike certain Liberal Democrat’s that we have over here. So as someone born after the GFA, personally, I think it’s time people appreciated what the party is doing now than worrying what it did in the past.

The bomb had been placed there some days earlier by the Continuity IRA in the expectation that the trailer would be loaded on to a ferry bound for Scotland. The PSNI believed the aim was to blow up the ferry on January 31st, Brexit day. The Continuity IRA denied this and said the bomb was intended to be smuggled to Britain: “It was timed for Britain’s exit from the EU and to bring attention to the sea border.
