    The problem with Tokusatsu is not the heavy promotion of toys. The true problem is that BANDAI DIDN'T MAKE A VISTAMP BASED OFF OF KAMEN RIDER SHIN.

    • @mattwo7
      @mattwo7 Před rokem +6

      And on the vpet/video game side of things, in spite of Bandai Japan owning a Pokemon toy license, they have yet to make a pokemon DiM card for Vital Bracelet like they did with Medabots. Both Kyurem and Necrozma could use the jogress (DNA Digivolve) mechanic too and they could make up an Omegamon style jogress with Armarouge and Ceruledge like they made Omedamon with Metabee and Rokusho (Violet Omedgemon?) . Its armor could be made of Registeel Digizoid like how Omedamon's is made of Cyplasium Digizoid.

      To be fair, fans can like shows whether or not the toys are implemented well. I appreciate when they are smart with toy use and use the entire cast, but not everyone notices that.
      I blame toys for pidgeonholding the lead as over accessorized, or being intrusive to mecha designs like that have during the 2010s.

    I've just gotten into Gundam and I think this is applicable to that franchise now. Sometimes the "selling toy" aspect can be obvious (when a suit gets replaced/upgraded too early, or the entire Build franchise), but I think it's great to have some attachment to the Mobile Suits and have the model kits displayed on my desk. Like the Witch From Mercury series for example. I wasn't sold on the Darilbalde at first, but episode 3 made me appreciate its cool points and want to purchase it.

  • @MAYOFORCE

    Tokusatsu is great in spite of it's toys. When I was watching Kamen Rider OOO with friends they made the observation that it was ironic that certain episodes have an anti-greed and anti-corporation message in a series made to sell you things. I like to think of it instead that the people working on the show care so much about making a show with good morals that they don't care if it runs contradictory to the supplemental material and merchandising.

    • @MAYOFORCE
      @MAYOFORCE Před rokem +1

      To counterpoint, some series do a better job at integrating their toys into the show than others, and I think that can be a fair reason why somebody would prefer one series over another. I think it's a delicate balance to have the show introduce the toys they want to sell at a scheduled time and write it in appropriately to keep immersion, and not everybody can do it consistently well every year.

    My only gripe with the overabundance of toys and merch regarding toku is that if you get into a show AFTER it's ended and wanna buy it's merch, you might be looking into some pretty big purchases especially if the show has a lot of merch and is popular like W.

    • @alfredgomez3128

      @qtsssim the limited amount of merchants make getting Toku toys harder. But yeah, fans should have prepped to spend a lot on old and new. A heap of merchandise are affordable, with W alone getting many rereleases.

    Thanks Marcos, this video was great and I for one enjoy collectable gimmicks from Sentai, Rider, and Ultra, they make the show more fun since the hero gets more power and thus EVOLVES the fighting (seriously compare Ultraman Z's fighting styles from all the way from Alpha Edge to Delta Rise Claw), and regardless of how gimmicky Toku can be, I still love it

    One of the 'problems' I have with toku is that starting with heisei phase 2, there has been a more heavy focus on the toy collectibles, with recent years having a boom in the amount of drivers in the show just to have more drivers. Although I do love that there has been support with missing items recently with Ex-Aid and Build, for as much flack as I give Bandai, they've also upped the quality in the drivers and I'll still keep buying it all (not the CSM though(yet)).

    Every media exists to sell you something, toys or otherwise. Tokusatsu is made to sell toys, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is made to sell toys, Transformers, He-Man; even the first Iron Man movie was picked to use Iron Man because that's the toy kids said they'd like to have most. There is nothing wrong with that; though it can get a bit annoying when a show introduces a new form for the first 17 episodes mostly to sell toys, or 9 different belts. I have a lot of merch of my favorite seasons of these shows and I don't regret it and I only buy them when I have the money for it. My worst problem is running out of space to display them.

    As someone(finishing) a degree in Marketing, I think Tokusatsu is a great example of how a franchise can be both wonderful story wise, yet also marketable enough for the suits to be appeased by profits. I have never really been bothered by this mindset, most likely because I've grown up liking shows such as justice league and samurai jack that sold toys but were also still great as stories.
    I do however hate hearing about shows getting cancelled because the "wrong demographic" bought the toys. I think the suits should focus on making money and let the creative run wild. I am arguably telling myself that, considering my career.

    This isn't just an issue with Tokusatsu. One of the rumored possible reason Young Justice was originally canceled after its second season was poor toy sales. Course on the other hand, as far as I am aware, Steven Universe initially struggled to find a toy company because it was a show that starred a boy yet toy companies felt it appealed more to girls, which probably confused the crap out of the backwards-thinking "blue toy isle, pink toy isle" morons.

    This was a great video. It's interesting Marcos made this video because it's related to me going through the Ultra Series. To be honest my plan was (still is) to go through Ultra Q to the introduction of Zero. I was going to hold off, mainly because I was going to take a break after watching that much Ultraman, but because of the New Gen Heroes shows starting to use the toy gimmicks. It's one of the reasons why I kind of stopped watching Kamen Rider after Fourze. And as Marcos and so many others have said, these shows are aimed to sell toys to kids, I get that. But when I look at toku from 2010 to now, it can be a little eye rolling and a little distracting how the toy gimmicks have increased. However, I still have a way to go before I get to the New Gen Heroes, so maybe my opinion will change. Again great video Marcos. Would love to see more videos on the Ultra Series in the future.

    I actually like the toycentric nature of Tokusatsu. It reminds me of Saturday Morning Cartoons from the 80s which ultimately raised some properties to the status of cultural icons. Eventually this style of show was killed in the West by activists and I would argue that generations of kids since then have had a lack of cultural touch stones to share amongst their cohort.
    Personally, I evaluate each new show based on the toys and story separately. KR Saber for instance had some really cool toys but the story was lacking so I stopped watching after the first arc. KR Geats IMO has lackluster toys but is easily the best story Reiwa has to date.

And even then, it annoys me when they have too many forms for one character and more annoying when the form they show in the series is used far few times before moving to the next form. One or 2 super modes is okay, but then when it goes to like 5 or more then I call BS. Instead of saving to get multiple characters, my budget goes to multiple versions of one and at times it feels like a ripoff. Which is honestly what my wallet loves about the Showa-era of Tokusatsu when characters only had one form as a representation.
