It is actually inflated tyres which make the vehicles float at least when the tyres are half submerged. Fully submerged tyres will be most dangerous.
It is the buoyancy of the vehicle that is bit problem, open the doors and get the water inside to weigh it down. Lower tyre pressures would provide more grip though

This was always a ridiculous endeavour. It would have been much better to have waited an hour or two to see if the flow slowed.

10psi in the tyres and good tyres as well.
Crack the doors to flood the passenger compartment to reduce the buoyancy.
Point the nose of the Land Cruiser slightly towards the flow.
Second gear low range and don't stop. (You can see the vehicle skew every time the brake lights come on.)
Even then you would have to have a top driver and a bucket full of luck. They had neither.
Oh yes, make sure your front hubs are locked as well.
