Erik Conover thanks Erik!! To be honest I'm so embarrassed after watching your video at how much I actually pay to live in NYC. I need to learn, no I MUST learn to budget so I can live with less stress and be able to travel more like I did when I lived in California. Great content as always! Thank you for always inspiring 💙

Yeah I don't understand that, when I lived in NYC I had what was similar to his breakfast and it cost me maybe around $4, and mine included avocado toast and almond milk in my coffee.... ($15-20 for coffee beans, $3 loaf of bread, $3 avocado, $4 carton of eggs, $3 carton of almond milk) and I shopped at whole foods so you could probably do even better than that if you just went to the smaller bodegas.

As a 20 year old, born and raised in Queens, I can say it costs way less if you live in another borough and commute into Manhattan for your work. Not only is rent cheaper, but the average costs for groceries and daily consumables is greatly reduced. Living and paying rent in Manhattan is a pocket drainer.

For example, i live in Slovakia, and this is how much it cost. You can buy 2 room apartment for about 60 000 euroes ( not capital city), or rent one for 350 a month. Car insurance is not expensive, for a nice sedan lets say 2018 Mazda 6 you will pay about 120 euroes a year. Petrol is 1.40 a liter. Grocieries cost pretty much the same as everywhere else. Taxi is about 5 euro for 3,5 miles yourney. Electricity is for an ordinary couple about 35 euro a month for 2 room apartment. Salaries are about 600 euroes a month after tax for low job to 1000 for ordinary job like firefighter, soldier, if you work IT than about 1400 to senior accountant or similar 3000 a month. Gym membership is about 25 euroes a month. Ordinary pension is about 450 a month, soldiers and policemen about 800 a month. If you go to restaurant, ordianry working day meal ( soup and main meal) is about 4 euroe, night out restaurant meal in nice restaurant about 15 to 20 euroe for a meal per person. All in all, new your has its beauty, but somehow you have to earn quite a lot to enjoy life there. Great vid btw

But I don't see the value in living in a shoebox with bed bugs and cockroaches, loud neighbors, even louder and dirtier/smellier streets, so many obnoxious people, brutal weather conditions, (hot and cold), all the while paying more for rent than nearly anywhere in the world. For what? Living in NY would be amazing if you were making an absolute KILLING with money and had a big house on the upper-east side - sign me up. But that's the 1%. Most people are living in squalor compared to other cities they could be in for the same cost of living. Not worth it at all.

But after watching "lifestyle" videos about people living in the big apple, I've realized that its actually quite hell if you don't earn at least 100K+ to at least have a comfortable lifestyle. It kinda changed my point of view but I still want to at least try.

Is so different here about south and north italy. i dont see the appeal of NYC anyway if you can't reap the benefits of the good aspects... sure you can work out on the street and make all your own meals and not do anything but guess what, you can do all of that in bfe oregon or wherever too. it depends what you care about and what you do. unless you work in some sort of industry that doesnt exist somewhere else...modeling, acting, fashion, yada yada theres no point. i would rather live in oregon and live good off of 96k a year than the way you lived for 96K+ in the first portion of the video. on another type of video, one could argue that you actually can live on a smaller income in many places if people didnt feel the need to constantly upgrade their phones, tvs, cars, buy mcmansions, etc. youtuber and social media fame is yet again leading this generation into feeling like they need all of this stuff to survive or be happy. just like the 90s did, etc. that is why the american dream is failing, because the american dream wasnt about all of that.

Caligula Longhbottom 100% on the money. I never understood the people who work at Low income jobs here in the city. You should be working somewhere lucrative or niche, like the examples you bought up. Also, definitely a lot of keeping up with the Jones and trying to impress people instead of being grateful for what you have. Much better to be in another place that's cheaper than keep struggling like a college student, living with a roommate or two.

My boyfriend is from Peru and I am from Louisiana. We met for the first time on Dec. 4th in Boston. On Dec 9th we spontaneously decided to catch a bus (4hr 30min ride) to NYC. It was just for the day and we got there early Saturday morning at 2:30 AM. It was both our first time there and first week we've ever spent together. It was an absolute dream. On foot we walked around that city for about 20 hours give or take. We didn't sleep the night before. Around 7am that morning was when it snowed for the first time in NY and we just happen to have been there. It was my boyfriends first time EVER seeing snow in his life too. In that 20 hour period we got NY pizza at 3:30Am, visited the Rockefeller Christmas tree (and was the first people to go up to it before they had just moved the gates to enter that morning). We visited the new World Trade Center (& memorial of the old one), Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and more!! All on foot. Towards the end of the day when the snow picked up and we were tired it got crazy. It was Saturday night and they had tons of people. We finally found a taxi and got back to the bus station to go back to Boston. We got back at 5Am Sunday morning and were complete zombies. Anyways we will never forget that time. It was absolute magic. Having my soulmate with me who lives so far away, was finally with me in the most magical city in the world. I had to share this because it makes a week today since we did it, and Erik has taught me so much about living your best life and going out and just LIVE. We did that. Thank you Erik for showing me anything is possible. I wish I could have seen you in the city!! All my love, Cylie + Franco. I work in manhattan and commute there 5 days a week - I’m living at home with my parents right now to save money and pay off my student loans. I don’t pay rent but I’ll chip in for things here and there, buy my own groceries, etc. I calculated my costs one day and I’m spending ~1200 a month while living rent free just on bills and necessities. NY is just so crazy expensive and student loans are ridiculous lol
But I like the comparisons you did. A lot of people at my job will buy lunch every single day. Even if you find a 10 dollar lunch deal, that comes to 50 a week and a month later that’s 200 dollars... I always make my food at home and meal prep for the work week. It’s incredible how much money you can save when you make slight changes like that.

If you make 100K in NYC, chances are you will earn at least 80K for doing same profession in Dallas, TX, where cost of living is way way less than 80% of NYC and you can save way more than you do in NYC.
