Also, to the gym membership & then also the “renting” with roommates. Over the years, I’ve known a lot of people that paid for the expensive gym membership so they could use the showers & bathrooms in the luxury gyms since it was an upgraded experience compared to their own apartment situation

Brett- I beg to differ. Nyc native, 53+ yrs. My rent for my real 1 bedroom in a very desirable part of Manhattan in an amenities bldg is ½ your rent. Remember the avg ny’er doesn’t have 2 terraces on a high floor, high rise bldg.
I agree, I just moved to the east village this month and I pay 2700 for a 1 bedroom that I’m sharing with my gf. When he made the comment that 5700 a month is average for late 20s, early 30s it made me realize this guy clearly came from a good family and doesn’t know what reality is. The average mid 20 year old does not make 100k a year.

It's expensive to live almost anywhere these days. It's getting crazy. So may as well live where you want and just adjust life best you can.

I get paid like 4000 a month... what the actual fuck?! 1500 a month for rent for a 5 bedroom house, 2 bathrooms full basement, full yard. New York sounds horrible considering the prices! That's fuuuck. I get paid 4000 a month and still have enough money to put away 1000$ every 2 weeks in savings

@@zacharystruble6439 I live in Vancouver. I hate the cost of living here. I'm definitely going to move back to my home city Edmonton one of these days. Prices aren't as good as smalltown/rural Saskatchewan or Alberta but it's better than this shit hole lol
This was interesting. I’ve been tabulating my costs for the last 2 years. Went to NYC a few times but Nov 2021 was the only entire uninterrupted month of being there and I spent $3375 - all in, stayed at a room in an Airbnb. Probably not doable anymore in 2023!

Thanks for keeping it real in this video. I’ve been a student in nyc for 5 years just graduated and am planning on living on a much lower monthly budget. He is right. It is possible. And he is right, his total is much more realistic. Guys nyc is crazy expensive until you move here I don’t wanna be hearing nothing about the prices he is mentioning. It is just plain expensive. The trade off is your personal life is likely to be amazing in nyc, the best people in the world are here. Peace and love always.

Great video. I know it may seem like a lot but when you factor in how much you're potentially making you're doing fine and within your means. Would be interesting if we saw a video that showcased what you make in a month. Maybe not exact numbers for privacy reasons but showing what a scheduled month of work looks like. Think it cold be great from your fans who are also up and comers to see. Appreciate the content.

How did you come to this conclusion? He never talks about how much money he makes. For all we know, he could have absolutely no savings and just make enough money to live month to month.
@@cephinisemodestin3348 he mentioned it a few times In previous videos. He definitely isn’t living paycheck to paycheck. My post wasn’t necessarily about his income but how his schedule is structured to facilitate his income.

Definitely e-bike was my best investment! I lived in another major world city for almost a decade before NY and the subway was way cheaper, nicer and more frequent, so $2.90 seems crazy to me if you're not commuting too far. You can pay off the bike/scooter in less than 2-years if you commute regularly.. and feel way better everyday. Just ride careful!

New Yorker here.. born n raised in North Jersey but live in midtown. This is very realistic. One of the things I tell everyone is that even making 100k (6 figures) isn't enough to comfortably live in New York. Brett just popped out a modest 5700 per month and 100k after taxes in New York City comes out to about 5500/month. I know people who easily spend 8-15k per month in New York.
No doubt NYC is very pricey! But, what other city in the world has so much to do for everyone? Plus, you really don't need a car! As long as you can get that $150K a year job you are all set! If you can't get that kind of money then I guess you will have roommates! Problem solved.
My monthly coffee expense was crazy too, especially after I started going into the office every day. But in the last month I got the Pret coffee subscription and it's been a game changer. Costs ~$40, and can get up to 5 coffees a day! I'm addicted!

Another thing I do is spring clean and make piles of like items. You’ll be surprised how much of everything you have. That you could have saved money on.

Don't forget what a wise person once said of food, "You can pay the farmer today or pay the doctor tomorrow." Paying more money for healthier food will serve you better in the long run. Medical bills will cost you far more than a grocery bill ever will. You can cure and even treat/prevent almost any chronic illness with a healthy diet. You make super awesome videos keep it up Brett!!

800 dollars in Shanghai is cheap for Americans, but expensive for someone who lives in Shanghai or any part of china.
I make my NYC coffee at home - if I am out I buy from a coffee cart only $2.00 coffee. Pack a lunch & eat in the park.

New York City isn't only Manhattan. There are many other boroughs optional if people want to save money.
I lived in shared apartments for lots of years. But now I want my peace, my privacy, my own space. When I get home from the office, especially in winter all I want is sit on my sofa for half an hour just wearing my underpants and relax..this is a banal example, but there’s quite a few things you can’t do when you have a roommate around. So it’s kinda sad that lots of people are like forced into getting roommates cos they can’t afford a decent studio in midtown 😢

The cheapest grocery options in Manhattan are Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and if you want to venture outside of the borough, there's a large Target with groceries in Brooklyn. Whole Foods may not seem like a bargain, but when you compare it to small mom and pop bodegas, it's actually quite reasonable, $12 eggs notwithstanding. The thing about Trader Joes is their universal pricing system. The price you pay in Manhattan is the same as what you would pay in any other city where they have outlets. The checkout lines can be long, especially for the stores in Union Square, Chelsea, or UWS, so it's best to shop in pairs. One person gets in line with the cart while the other person shops the store and brings items to the cart.
There is also an Aldi at 117 east side at the east river in the mail. Fabu prices
We usually do Amazon fresh. Delivers all to your doorstep at the time you want, and the total price is like 75% or so compared to whole foods.
His egg example is misleading, because he specifically took expensive eggs off the shelf. You can get the Whole Foods branded eggs for similar prices to Trader Joe’s eggs.

I live in the bronx and it’s literally a third world country here. It’s a bit cheaper but still. I live in a rented house with my family and our monthly rent is 3000. Since I’m in college, I only have to pay internet, phone, and gas and electric bill which is usually less than $500. I go to college in Manhattan and during my break, I walk around Manhattan and check out all the buildings. I’d love to live in a condo in Manhattan. But I’m fine paying only $500 a month in my tiny bedroom in a house with parking space.

Comparing prices in whole foods vs my country, the one thing that surprised me was Ben & Jerry ice cream being only 7$ while here it's 8Eur. Otherwise like milk or eggs are double or tripple the price there
Thanks for the breakdown, I always wondered how much it costs to live in NYC. So almost 6k for the basic necessities like shelter, transportation, food & drinks. I'd be curious to know how much that goes up when you include stuff like clothes, gadgets, haircuts, services, and other occasional purchases. Maybe 10k a month?
Although I don’t have an experience of living in New York but live in a different western city instead, I would still argue that this number is much higher than what it can be. Along with some of the suggestions from the video, having a roommate (or living in a cheaper area), eating out less frequently and tracking your expenses could bring it - I believe - 50% down, or even more. But this of course depends on the lifestyle and preferences, none of which are better or worse, just different for everyone 🙂
It looks like youre not heeding that Warren Buffett quote you put up at the beginning of the video. If you are a CZcamsr and work remotely, to heck with those crazy prices. Live in a small town, spend half of what you spend now and save the rest. You still get to travel all over for work, so you're not missing much in my book.

I kinda feel sorry for those who live in NYC. I pay 300 € for 2 two bedroom house, 4k for one bedroom house is simply insane. I live in Portugal so If I were to move to a new place I'd say currently I would have to pay atleast 600€ for the same type of house (I live close to the capital) but still, it's nowhere close to that price tag.

Theoretically, if you wanted to afford his rent and spend no more than 30% of your income (suggested) you would need to make 130k annually before taxes 😮

$4100 for a studio is ridiculous, I only pay a quarter of that for a new 3bdr house on 1/2 an acre . 7.50 for a coffee? Try .50 for a Keurig mug of Joe. Over $5600 a month to live in a crime ridden city, not good. Watch out for yourself on the subway it could be your last ride but at least it's the cheapest thing on your list. Be safe and hopefully you don't become a statistic.
