Claas Axion 960 TerraTrac Ploughing & Cultivating in the UK

  • Claas UK and Claas Eastern were kind enough to stop by with their new Claas Axion 960 TerraTrac to show us what it can do. After 4 days of rain (about 35mm overall), this new Claas did not disappoint.
    We started with our 10 furrow Kverneland plough before trying our Vaderstad Topdown. This new Claas Axion 960 TerraTrac did an excellent job pulling both and was surprisingly light on the wet headlands.
    We would love to see one of these beasts added to our fleet one day! Is this better than the Case Rowtrac we normally use? It would be great to put them head-to-head one day and find out!
    Warter Priory is a world class farming operation set in the heart of East Yorkshire amidst 12,000 acres. At Warter, we pride ourselves on our reputation for quality and efficient farming. The main crops we focus on growing are wheat, barley and oilseed rape. We also grow peas in partnership with Birds Eye and some of our land is used for growing potatoes.

    I like the half-track design on this tractor. It looks cool. This tractor nice looking. There's some benefits to these track design too. Most rigid frame tractors today use a triangular track and the drive sprockets is at the top, with this type of track the drive sprocket is making contact with the ground less chance of slippage. Plus you get more contactwith the track against the sprocket I guess you would call that drive wheel I don't know what they call it inside the track you guys get what I'm saying.

    They should really do a square frame plow so then the headland can be done at the same time saving time , fuel, trouble.. with the GPS guide system it still can allow for the angled field edges no problems! Why plows seem to be still long angled length designs when it far better to have the flat wide design of the frame plow based on a cultivator frame. Nice tractor there.

    it's nice to see this and i'm sure it has more traction in the rear becouse of the track it has though maybe it would slip a little more becouse of it doesn't go as deep as the tires it would have instead

    • @MFKR696
      @MFKR696 Před 4 lety +2

      Having the tires dig into the soil is not desirable at all in agriculture. There's a reason why many are switching over to flotation-type tires as of late. The less pressure a tractor exerts on the ground, the more mobile it will be, in addition to the fact that it won't damage the soil as much. Digging into the ground is how you get stuck. If tracks didn't offer superior traction, bulldozers wouldn't all have tracks on them, and neither would tanks.

    • @john34261
      @john34261 Před 4 lety

      alright and i'm sure a bit smarter as i didn't know what good could come with flotation tires though how much damage would compaction do? probably too much damage to the soil which you say is pretty undesireable in alot of places so what kind of flotation tires would be best? the one we see here or the other type tractors has?

    • @MFKR696
      @MFKR696 Před 4 lety

      @@john34261 I couldn't really tell you which ones are best. Just look up the big tire manufacturers (Mitas, Trelleborg, Michellin, Goodyear, etc.), see what LSW/LGP tires they have and then research them.

    • @john34261
      @john34261 Před 4 lety

      @@MFKR696 i would believe different manufactor has different qualities and i know or atleast guess the soil has different qualities too so maybe depending on the soil is what manufactor i would need to buy though it would be too expensive to try all of the manufactors

    • @MFKR696
      @MFKR696 Před 4 lety

      @@john34261 You are correct. You would have to figure out which model works best for the terrain you're operating in. Every manufacturer has its pros and cons, and every manufacturer has nifty little features of their own. Like Trelleborg, for instance. They clear mud quite a bit better than most, but due to their sharp, angular tread edges, they tear up the ground a bit, regardless of how wide they are. On the budget end of things, I would suggest starting your research with Mitas. They might have what you need. I'm not saying you have to go and buy a whole bunch of tires. Just look them up on their website and read the specs. Usually, they'll say specifically what a model or line is for, and there's usually ratings for load-capacity, compaction and such.

    Just when you thought tractors could not get any uglier and ridiculous looking along comes this bloody thing .

    • @MFKR696
      @MFKR696 Před 4 lety

      It does seem like Claas views being ugly as some sort of art form these days. The only model from their current lineup that doesn't look like it belongs on the Island of Lost Toys is the Xerion. The Axion is ugly enough as it is, and those poorly-executed tracks make it even worse. I have no problem with the track system itself, but how they're mounted and how the body-work was handled around them just looks half-baked. It looks like a lazy kit-bash rather than the world class tractor that a Claas is supposed to be. The way they look is just as disappointing and underwhelming as the first time I saw a Lamborghini tractor. For all I know, it might be a great rig, but it sure doesn't look the part. As far as looks go, these days Deutz-Fahr seems to have put alot of thought into its designs. Everything that's there looks like it belongs, in contrast to the tracked Axion, which just looks like a hodge-podge that was designed by a 5-year-old.
