Welcome to channel if you're new here, I'm Orbital Potato and play a bunch of strategy, simulation and sci-fi games here on CZcams. I usually cover these games in the Lets Play format, but also make videos analysing specific game mechanics and looking at new releases. If you feel so inclined, consider subscribing, I would love to have you along for the ride! - Hry
What I expect from games in 2020+ is to answer one simple question: why was it made? With so many better games already existing, what was the purpose of recreating something from 0 as if it was 1990? Because all these games are so damn shy to add anything concept it's actually pointless to even try them. Same living building, same forestry huts, same mines, same smelters, same churches. Warcraft 1 had it all. And it brought so much into gaming.
From the top of my head, you could add a strong archaeological element and build a city around digging. At different chances you'd find artifacts giving bonuses to various values like energy generation, food growth speed, reproduction speed, villager movement speed etc. Or you could have a 2D city building game, fusing Terraria and Diggles, going way deeper, building cities and outposts to reach even greater depths. Make a game around reaching extreme depths unseen in other games, mine ores and build better structures. Or adapt the idea of Raft and build a city on a asteroid flying through space, collecting junk and ores. Fight pirates, obviously. Trade with passing merchants. Fight dangers like other asteroids, passing near stars, entering magnetic anomaly zones, avoiding black holes and gas giants. Or it could be a classic village growth but with stages like Spore, reaching out into managing whole planet, them star system, then even other dimensions via portals. From hut to universe. Or an anthill. Build a real anthill. Absolutely different needs and aims.
There must be some idea. Something we didn't do before. Ixion and Wandering Village have a potential but something tells me they didn't go far. Scratched the surface and stopped at the safe familiar gameplay. I'm tired of clones.
Maybe cut down on the triple espresso's just a tad, but yeah u got some good points👍
Against the Storm is my GOTY since I first stumbled upon it a month or so after it started up. The developers are constantly updating it and patching anything that needs patching. A serious gem of all gems for someone who is constantly falling back into the "what game to play" loop as it has so many elements in one package in a way that just -works-.
Really Really love Urbek. In addition to being a good city builder, it scratches the puzzle-solving itch.
Thank you for your vids because I am always looking for something new to play.
where do you stream? find only this channel of yours. great content. As a absolut beginner in city builders I search a good one to start in the genre
Thank you for making a list of games I can actually play now and isnt upcoming or a demo! Very annoying when you are searching for something to play but all there is, is upcoming etc. So ty a lot
Glad I could help!
I'm waiting to see if Ixion will be balanced in a patch. Then I would consider buying it because I love the concept.
Ixion I'd like them to add a difficulty option. They are planning it but it's a long way out. Many players disliked the punishing difficulty.
Agree with that, not even just difficultly, just the questionable mechanics chanegs too
Blud is cooking well
I enjoyed the video
I was hoping Songs of Syx gets a mention, but only now do i realize only released titles were mentioned :P xD.
Is there any chance you'll do any more videos on Urbek? The concept seems interesting, but the lack of coverage seems somewhat concerning and I'm not sure how well it holds up in the long run.
Also, on the topic of fitting stories into strategy games, Endless Space 2 does a decent job of it, though their stories are relatively limited, compared to something like Ixion or Frost Punk.
Probably not, as my channel is geared towards covering new games, but I did play through it all on stream last year
@@orbitalpotato That makes sense. Are VODs of the stream available anywhere? (On twitch, it looks like there aren't any saved videos on your channel, but I could be missing something.)
Personally I really enjoyed Ixion. I'm currently doing a second play-through to get some of the achievements I missed the first time.
I do agree that accidents are very annoying though, especially since they still trigger and kill people if you're at Optimal working conditions. The upside is there's a bug where if you never let the worker count drop below Optimal outside of the Prologue then accident will never trigger so you can effectively play without accidents if you want.
hahaha thats a great fun fact!
You should check out the game 'Sapiens'. In Sapiens you create your own prehistoric civilization. Lead your tribe from the ground, immersed in the world while you shape it. Build towns and industry with complete freedom and control, from placing the tiniest pebble to constructing monumental structures. Start with nothing and advance through thousands of years of technological breakthroughs in this intimate yet expansive colony sim.

The Wandering Village is just right, the game is super fun + cute + relaxing 😆
Agree, it's great
Al on my wishlist or library but completely missed Ballads of Hongye. Downloading the demo right now because it looks epic and i think alot of meh reeviews are from people suspecting a different kind of game.
It's WILD but its cooL!
Timberborn should have been on this list tbh
I love anno 1800, any other recommendation?
SimCity?
11:56 Almost never works in a strategy game? I disagree. Ever heard of Warcraft RTS games? Starcraft? UFO / X-COM games? Homeworld series? Those game blend story and strategy in a fantastic way.
i tried XION twice and i failed on 2nd mission where u have to get 500 cryogen people on board.
if i don't collect them all in time i get removed from my leader place and its game over.
if i collect them all fast dont have space to hold them all and people get angry i dont unfreeze them.
if i unfreeze them i dont have space for them to live in and not enough food ......
Pioneers of Pagonia is masterpiece
I'll keep my eyes on it!
How would you know that? only a 25 second trailer out there, isnt released yet
i wihs these games were free 2 play i so want to play them all
I seriously wanted to buy against the storm and then I saw those fuckin cards. Thats what killed Kingdoms Reborn for me. Why the hell they put fuckin cards selector in building games...
If you mean the building selection, then just let me say that Against The Storm kinda isn't like a normal city builder, because a lot of things have many, many options to get to the same endpoints. It's actually a roguelite with small 'runs' in that regard. Since you keep building temporary cities all the time, it's actually quite fun to have varied options each time, because that keeps it from becoming just a single optimal strategy you simply execute on each time.
Imagine it being like random items in any roguelite game. Many builds lead to cool 'runs' so to speak.
Bad sound. Cant watch
