- A superb and very testing wild camp this one! Plenty going on, nearly eaten alive by midges but the most stunning location.

At least the drone (and you) made it off the hill in one piece. I’m 63 and like yourself, really grateful that I’m still able to get out and do the stuff. Now it’s all about playing the long game, keeping the weight down, looking after joints and making sure I don’t come a cropper falling down things, into things or off things. 👍🏻👍🏻
Very true!
Well Richard, to quote the Sir Davos character from “Game of Thrones”: “Nothing (expletive deleted) you harder than time”.
Thanks for taking us along again. I've been away from your channel a while. Sorry about that, no reason, just been busy. It just means I'll binge watch your vids for a couple days. Stay up man! You tackled that tree it sounds like, that's pretty rad for anyone. Lol
I once rescued a drone off a roof. Rescued a few cats out of trees though. Take welders gloves and a builders dumpy bag.
By the way Richard I'm going to be 62 in a few months and still go hiking and camping and exploring the rivers in my kayak. I just don't get in a hurry any more. Just take my time and enjoy being out.
Dwayne
PS… Double Deckers are a fave of mine, but it’s a toffee crisp for D 😊 🍫
You are so right. Time stands still for no one, and if we don't listen to our bodies telling us that, we get injured because of our own impatience with ourselves, and then we can't do any of it until we heal - and hope we heal well. Just like you are telling yourself, I'll also say - just enjoy the journey. It's not a race. It's a way to RELAX and take int he beauty of nature in our own time - because time waits for no one. So slow it down, enjoy, relax and be safe. As usual, enjoyed this episode. A nice secluded spot you found! Good thing the midges don't bite!! and thanks for sharing it with us.
Very wise words and thank you for the comment!
And that’s why you go to countryside to chill out. We will all be dead soon enough.
I'm 50 and while it usually doesn't bother me a bit, last week I was hiking with a 28-year-old woman, and when she ran up a hill and I trudged behind her, that's when I thought "I'm getting old"... and I hope you don't find it offensive, but I chuckled a bit when the drone hit a tree in a landscape essentially bereft of trees... good thing it (and you) survived with little damage done.
Funny, Richard, I'm a bloody idiot, too. Lots of us are.
Ha. I’m glad there’s 2 of us!
You need to enjoy it for yourself (our visual enjoyment is only a bonus). A little push on yourself is o.k. but if you do too much all you will do is exacerbate injuries you already have or make further injuries and then you won't be able to any activities or possibly work.
At 56 I was running my 100th marathon. Now 7 yrs later I am starting to venture into wild camping and looking forward to walking the Yorkshire Wolds Way next week. Like you I have slowed down to the point now where I don't care what position I come in the race, I've also had quite a few DNFs which can be soul destroying, but at least we are getting out, staying fit and enjoying life. Loving the channel BTW. Oh and I took a gossamer gear the one on the coast to coast walk 2 years ago, didn't like it! couldn't get on with the condensation.
Great pitch Richard but was bound to be a bit damp so close to the brook. Lucky find and wild rescue, climbing trees 🙈🙉🙊
Yes Richard, 9min 30sec also reminded me of "calendar girls" 😉
Great video again, inspirational, Thanks Richard
My pleasure!
Bet ur Doc is Happy with You Richard, rest the Leg lol .good news on the Drone
Speaking as a shocking perfectionist myself whose mind races at a 100 miles an hour, I had got to the stage where nothing I did was good enough, I had to push and push myself. I learned a lesson climbing Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon. I was walking with a friend who was a foot taller than me and making myself utterly miserable because I was trying to keep up. I sent my friend on to do what tall people do and I slowed right down, thought about the placement of every step, listened to the wind, the sound of my boots on the path, the birds and sheep. It was a fantastic walk. Stay in the moment, don't think about what's ahead and don't think about what has just passed. Turn off the timing devices, people have been walking for eons without them. Best of luck and happy walking.
Exactly. Thanks!
I love seeing the English countryside!
Stunning!
Great video mate. Be kind to yourself!
"It's not the age, it's the mileage." Another great video, keep at it, don't worry about how far, fast etc. Fun is first. 😀
Well said!
Could be your body saying we've peaked with the Ironman now let's not overdo it. Great news on the Drone recovery 👍😁👍
You got that right!
Poor lil drone spent the night out in the cold. Nice that it was able to free itself 😂
Ha. Thanks!!
Richard learn to enjoy the moment. Lovely video and good to see you out again
Absolutely
Great video Richard, the scenery where you live is stunning.
Love the heather being in full colour.
All the best John b😎
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video! Those stone walls in the beginning of the video are incredible.
Glad you like them!
Well done I'm so jealous. I watch quite a few videos as I'm a cancer survivor and still in remission. I so want to get back out and camp and walk and have fresh air again.
Fight the good fight, Alison. X
Listen to your inner self and enjoy every day without competing with yourself, love your videos xx
So true!
What a great spot. I'm not sure I could tolerate the midges. Glad you got your drone back and it is still in good working order.
You and me both!
Totally agree Richard stop beating yourself up and enjoy your pace, my wife and I are both 70 and just finished the West Highland Way with full packs in eight days, we both set a pace starting the days early and being caught up by younger walkers later in the day instead of enjoying the surroundings more and taking a slower pace.
Great video 👏🏻
Yep. Time to take it easier!
@@RichardOutdoors Not to easy we still need the videos.
I know just how you were feeling concerning the drone. My "smart" drone ended up in a tree as well . . . several times. lol. Sure glad you were able to get your drone back relatively undamaged. My drone does not look so great since I had to use hot glue to put it back together again.
Oh no!
Good to see you again.
Welcome back
I think it is more rewarding if your pushing yourself and are achieving, but no harm in slowing down a little , I’m a shepherdess few years older than you ,recovering from serious accident breaking 11 of my vertebrae but I’m back out the hills shepherding as my job and wild camping as my hobbie just all done bit slower now !
Keep going. Well done!
We felt for you with those Midges, they just love me... Glad the drone was safe in the end. Looked for the Pad Thai, looks like a US only option. Best to all, J&A&B&T
Drop me an email with your address. 😉
super channel, Richard,
You and that drone!!! Didn’t it auto land on the other side of the river in another video?! Let’s not make reference to your profession… 😁🤣
Great video as always. Be kind to yourself, who wants to be training like they are competing for an IM all the time, you’d be miserable. 😩
Enjoy that you are/can be active, taking your time has it benefits, think of all the things you’d miss running a 7min mile!!! 😜
Good call! Xx
And Mrs Richard Outdoors was also happy about getting the drone back by climbing a tree with a dodgy knee?😮😅
Great video as always. Richard my brain thinks I am still 28 my body reminds me at times when striding up a hill with my backpack that I am 65. Will always as long as I can stay active but do remind myself to take it easier.
Absolutely!
Welcome back Richard. I'm 51 and various bits of me starting to fail (Too many years of Rugby...)...I'm beginning to accept it and appreciate what I have a lot more. Learn to love yourself a bit and be happy with where you are! Cracking video, keep up the great work Sir!
Absolutely
Just watched this. I have to stop myself doing exactly the same head down arse up and just walk, forgetting to take in the surroundings and just enjoy it. Brilliant video/channel just subbed.
That’s a good phrase and very accurate! Thanks for subbing!
Incredible scenery! Bummer about the midges, though. Glad you got your drone back (and don't do that again, ha!). Thanks for your videos.
Entertaining as usual Richard, thank you and thank goodness you didn't fall out of that tree... a world without your videos.... doesn’t bear thinking about. 👍 👍
So nice of you
Great views.
The best
Thanks Richard Love the vid I Live in NZ and Love it
Glad you enjoyed it
What a wonderful video Richard! So glad that you got your Drone back again, and be kinder to yourself! Your videos are terrific and at the age of 56 you certainly are athletic enough! I'm an Octiginarian and so have some experience of these things!
Thank you, I will!
Great as always Richard 😊 keep them coming
Great video Richard! Oh, I so relate to you pushing yourself! I’m 71 and I have to keep reminding myself that you’re not 51 anymore! The body just can’t do what it did 20 years ago. So happy you were able to recover the drone! Look forward to your next video!
First time viewer, really enjoyed your video in one of my favourite places.
Welcome aboard!
Well this was the first video I have seen of yours and I enjoyed coming along with you very much and I will subscribe gladly and looking forward to coming along on lots more adventures.
Dwayne
Welcome and thanks!
Hello Richard, from NZ. I used to get angry with myself over my speed and pace, but now I am content with my travel times and speed. I'm 75 and been in the mountains for 50+ years, I still carry up to 25 kgs, when you get older, you lose speed but gain stamina. I recently finished a 3-day tramping trip (hiking) and the last day was, 15 hours,2 mins and 42seconds. (Including a climb out of the valley 1400m). I did the trip on stopwatch. To date I've completed 39 tramps so far, this year. My fittest years were the forties and fifties. So, stop beating yourself up and go with the flow, ageing comes to us all, had to smile when you past by those two women, over here we would stop and have a chat about the state of the track and weather on the tops. English reserve a. Enjoyed the video. ATB Cheers from the mountains of NZ ☺☺
Wise words, thanks!
For my next motorcycle/camping trip to Kettlewell in Wharfedale (kind of your neck of the woods), I thought oh yes a Pad Thai meal for two, perfect, I'll have that.
Nipped over to Amazon UK and shock horror it's £32.76!!😢 not being an international airline pilot, can't pop over the Atlantic! Oh well back to a tin of beans and sausage then!! Curses !!
Being from Scotland I know only too well the horror delights of being eaten alive by the dreaded midge.... commiserations!!
Cheers,
Richard Indoors
I can pick up a few for you mate.
6:26 - Mate, if everything is a priority- nothing is a priority- - your role has changed, you’re here (at least on this channel) to demonstrate, educate and, to a degree - entertain. Hopefully it’ll make you some dollars from the algorithms. Don’t beat yourself up - consider yourself a classic, someone who has done brilliant things. Have a word with yourself. And of course keep making the vids 🎉 👏
Thanks. You’re absolutely right!
👍
I'm always amazed when I see all those beautifull stone fences and wondering who made those and how long it took to build those. Is it to you Brits, that you don't pay attention to those, because you see those all the time? Might be the same like here in Finland, I don't pay attention to lakes because we have so many.
I'm sure that's the reason!
Kinda thought that wind would knock it out of the tree. Very nice. Thanks for sharing my friend 🤠
Wonderful video Richard, thank you. I was wondering what you were up to (obviously, drone-rescues..!). That were Yorkshire, ther, right proper! I love your “local” videos, they do so remind me of my near-20 years living in Yorkshire. Do you ever get to Long Preston? Some nice country there, where I learned to run. Try it if you will.
But go easy on yourself, and enjoy what you do. You only have to compete with yourself you know! I did the London Marathon five times, 1999 - 2003, and the last time I went to the line thinking “This is going to hurt. I don’t really want this..” I pretty well gave up running at that point (well, after the event of course!). I occasionally jog a bit, but at 77, I have to accept that age takes a toll, like it or not🥹. Take care mate! Les
Wise words, Les and thanks!
Cracking location. There’s a lot to be said for camping ‘in the hills’ as well as on top of them.
Slow down ya daft sod! There, that's you told! A few ideas that came to mind that might inspire you to dawdle a bit more: challenge yourself to learn the local plant life - take some ID books and teach yourself what's there; likewise the wildlife; photography - look for the defining still shot of each area; read up on the history of an area and try and identify the landscape features associated with it. Anything in fact that gives you an alternative focus and encourages you to be nosey about what you see around you. In my head you're reading this thinking 'hate that, no interest in that, don't be daft...' but hey, I tried 🤪
All the best Richard, and I hope you do find ways to make the journey as inspiring as the destination. Pete.
That’s extremely sound advice. Thanks!
@@RichardOutdoors No idea if it's something that would work for you, but maybe look at it as ways to add value to the trip. Plus, learning new things is never a waste of time in my book. Mostly though, enjoy! ATB...
Never lose that competitive edge, Richard. Glad to see that your family have inherited that as well.x
Thanks 👍xx
Richard, I'm coming up to my 64th, and I was out today on a recon for Intl Bivvy Bag Day on Saturday. Remember, the reason we go out isn't a race but to enjoy it all, the climb, the views, and the peace. Cheers and great vid.
Very true!
Nah then Richard. You crashed your drone. Remind me of your main employment again. 😳😂
Cheers, Paul
🤭
How lovely to see you again, Mr O 😊. We agree… it’s important to slow down, take a breath and smell the roses (as they say!) PLEASE don’t take up drone-rescue as a full time occupation! It could be extremely unhealthy 😅 xx S & D xx
Ha, I'll get it right one day! xx
It's all about the journey my friend. Take your time enjoy your life now!❤
Thank you, I will
A great camp Richard and glad you got the drone back. I have never been particularly competitive and believe one should always enjoy the journey. Yes if you are there quickly then well done, but what did you miss? Take your time, rest and look around, that's what you will remember when you get back. Stop being hard on yourself and enjoy the moment, but please never stop being you.
Thanks Stephen. V true.
Hi, Richard. Great video as usual. You are right about being too hard on yourself. I knew someone that started running the London Marathon when it first started, and he became fixated with running his whole life against the clock. He went from being a decent athlete to a complete pain in the ar*e! Life's too short to beat yourself up!
Too true!
Secure that crap, chap. The brain carries on writing cheques the body can't cash as we get older (I'm 43 and feeling it!!) It takes me longer to recover after walks and expeds, but at least we're still doing the walking and expeds!
True!
Great video Richard, thank you for sharing. Glad you managed to get your drone back without too much damage. Take care.
Me too!
Cool camp and glad the drone was retrieved!
Me too!
That's why you need to fly your drone within line of sight!
It was. Ish!
@@RichardOutdoors Very ish!
The highlight of my week/month/whenever is when a video of yours lands (as I know you are often way up above us cruising across this beautiful globe). You are too hard on yourself - you’ve achieved so much in your fitness and in your life; you should be so proud of yourself! But I do appreciate your humble honesty 😊
Thanks so much!
So you crashed the drone? What's your day job again? 🤣. 4 months after having a conary stent inserted I'm just starting to realise that my body can't keep up with what the head thinks it can do. Heart is fine but the short lay off has highlighted other injuries, aches and pains that I knew were there before but ignored. I still hike and carry photo kit up and down hills but at a slower pace and reduced the weight. I'm starting to love it again. Take note! 🙂
Will do!
Fairplay 👏. I gotta say this was an inspiration to me as I have dodgy knees and it'll push me to lose a few pounds and get more active. A 4:41 s recently due to the double melon knee I haven't been out for a wild camp hike for a couple of years . And yeah agreed you can still do this sort of stuff at a slower pace and really take in your surroundings (its not a race Richard have a word with yourself)
Cool that you got the drone back although the risk assessment sounded risky 😂.
Should of saved the double decker for the drone retrieval 😊.. enjoy your videos a lot so keep on keeping on 👌.. looking forward to the next one .. P.S the heather was stunning so was the hikers you passed 😂
🤣🤣🤣!
Another enjoyable video Richard, thankyou for taking us along. 😊
I know often we feel like we aren't good enough at doing things but once you allow yourself to let go of your own negative thoughts the more you will enjoy everything.
I have always been bullied, even as an adult and made to think I was worthless because of my size. I finally decided to just do what I wanted regardless of what others thought. I camp, although I can't hike anymore I still walk, swim and do what I can. I now think anyone who can't accept me for who I am and how I look it's their loss not mine.
Oh the Heather looks so pretty. Does Heather have a fragrance at all? We don't have it here in Australia but when I see photos it reminds me of my dear mother who's name was Heather.
Keep enjoying your adventures. Take care, Jennylee
Thanks Jenny. Yes, stunning isn’t it? No real aroma I’m aware of but just incredibly fresh.
When did you do IM Barca Richard? I did IM Wales last year. I'm 56 like you, and I'd never been fitter or leaner 🏴
Hi! Oct 2022
Great video Richard. Stop pushing yourself sooo hard. There you go, told you!! Some fabulously stunning views. Really pleased you got your drone back, I know what that feels like! By the way, which water filter were you using in this video, I didn’t recognise it? Thanks for all your effort in producing videos for us. Atb. Paul.
Thanks 👍it’s a Katadyn filter and it’s brilliant.
Thank you Richard.
New watcher here, but at least you seem to realise when you're making uncalled for asks. I do the same thing at 44, and have to also force myself to realise I'm doing it.
Also, it's not just you having to realise: "odd" bit of weather ATM (I measured 30°c last Wednesday when my wife and I were doing the limestone way and I was pushing us to pick up the pace: totally unnecessary to do that, but in my head I have a mileage and by god we're doing it. Until I realise that's stupid.)
Also, was trying to work out why I sort of recognised where you were until you mentioned the Wharfe Valley. Think we've wandered around there regularly, us being right on the Shipley-Settle-Carlisle line? I'm probably wrong.
/trying to be vague for various don't mention the spot & privacy reasons, btw.
Welcome and thanks for the message. Yes, you’re not far off!
Just found / new to.the channel...very good...Like the laugh.
Perhaps more UK wildcamps and advise what kit your.using.
Cheers
Thanks, will do!
@@RichardOutdoors Mainly clothing and footwear thanks
Richard I'd advise one thing. If it's on your control then control it. If not then dont give a fuck. Look where you were. Look at the veiws. Lifes a breeze mate it's as hard as you make it. I'd give my high teeth to have the landscape you have at my doorstep. Take splice I'm jealous
Sound advice and thanks!
@@RichardOutdoors you're most welcome my friend.
