- Mànran's official video for 'Latha Math' directed by Rachel Hendry.
Mànran are the hottest new band on the Scottish music scene. Combining driving accordion, fiddle, Highland pipes, Uilleann pipes and flute with powerful songs in English and Gaelic, all underpinned by rocking drums and bass. Though the band is a fairly recent collaboration, each member has been dazzling crowds in Scotland and throughout the world with various line-ups for a number of years but now unite to create Mànran: the fresh, unstoppable sound of modern Gaelic Scotland. Since coming together in June 2010 the band have already played at festivals in Europe and Scotland. The band have enjoyed gigs at Celtica in Italy, The Hebridean Celtic Festival in Lewis and are looking forward to a busy 2011.
Mànran are hoping to become the first band in the 21st century to take a Gaelic song into the official UK top 40. The song, "Latha Math," was written by lead singer Norrie MacIver and it will be released on the 17th of January. It will be available for download only on iTunes. The single was produced by two of the countries top producers, Calum Malcolm (Wet Wet Wet, Simple Minds and Runrig) and also legendary accordion player and musician Phil Cunningham.
After a very successful start to 2011 after appearing on the BBC Alba hogmanay show the band are now turning their attention by making history and taking "Latha Math" to the UK Top 40!! - Hudba
12 years later and I found this song. God it's good. I don't understand the language but it doesnt' seem to matter, I can hear the lyrics and image what they they are singing about. Love it. More stuff like this!
For me, this song is my answer to the question in the Colbert Questionnaire "If you could listen to only one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?", or something to that effect. Latha Math by Mànran. It describes a beautiful day on the Isle of Lewis. The boys catching salmon, the old men cutting peat, the smell of the sea coming in through the window, and the quiet and calm of the coming night. It makes me want to be there to experience it for myself. Tha e math a bhith beò. It is good to be alive.
Tha an t-òran seo spòrsail agus glè mhath 👏.
Love it.. Love it.. Love it... Pure Alba...
I want to learn this song from them studying Scottish Gaelic. it means so much to me will not give up till I can pronounce all.
Absolutely love this. Soar Alba. From Korea
I love this song! When I need a pickup I put it on and dance around the living room! Thanks, guys!
I grew up speaking Gealic, although I unfortunately lost a lot of my knowledge after my school shut down, even though it is coming back now, and went to see their concert when I was around four or five in Glasgow. This was my brother and I's favourite song. Love it.
How old are you?

They play music together from all the regions .Wonderful to watch and listen to the different strands of our shared Celtic culture playing the music of our people.

+Moira Mo Know what you mean Moira. I miss Mallaig-- my home. Ewen Henderson, the fiddler, is originally from Mallaig and his mam and I played in a band there back in the 80s.
Moira Mo MUM WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!??? 😆 Tha an oran sea màth nàch eil?
Really hits home for me too. Actually pretty closely related to Ewen, and I've got a chunk of Family in Lewis as well. Really homely songs.
Latha math air an eileann meaning Great day on the island/isle (the first line of the chorus or séist) that being of course Lewis or Leòdhais

these guys are way too good for eurovision.
Yup, they were really GREAT at CC Glasgow, pity Norrie was ill. The audience reception was great, and I listened to 4 days (that's all I could afford) of mind-bendingly good music, from free 2pm sessions, to concerts, to 3am late sessions. Get to CC 2014 if you can.
I am looking forward to seeing Manran at Milwaukee Irish Fest this summer!
Oh how beautiful that sounds. I hope so much they're playing while I'm in scotland..!
Congrats on making it to No. 6 on the UK Indie Singles chart.

Great music, I heard this on Mark Radcliffe (Radio 2) Today. Is there an english translation of the lyrics anywhere?

Latha math air an Eilean
Eilean Leòdhais mo Ghràidh
Latha math air an Eilean
Dachaigh mo smuaintean gu bràth
Verse 1
Ag èirigh tràth anns a' mhadainn
A' ghrian a' deàrrsadh sìos
Tha àile na mara a' tighinn tron uinneig
Tha h-uile duin' an àirde
Verse 2
Tha an abhainn làn le pailteas uisge
Tha am bradan a' tighinn a-rithist
Tha na balaich bheaga shios air an drochaid
Feuch an glac iad aon no dhà
Verse 3
Tha an t-Earrach ann 's na làithean fada
Tha na h-uain a' ruith mun cuairt
Tha na bodaich a-muigh a' buain na mònach
Tha an t-àm sin air tighinn a-rithist
Verse 4
Tha a' ghealach shuas 's a' ghrian na cadal
Tha an oidhche nis air tighinn
Tha e sàmhach is ciùin tron an Eilean
Tha e math a bhith beò
Tha e math a bhith beò

Thachair mi ris an òran seo timcheall air 5 bliadhnaichean air ais fhad 's a bha mise agus luchd-ionnsachaidh na Gàidhlig à oilthighean na Galltachd eile ann an Steòrnabhagh airson sgoil-shamhraidh. Dh'èist caraid agus mise ris gach latha fhad 's a bha sinn ann an Leòdhas agus seachdainean às dèidh sin. Bha mi air ais air an eilean an t-seachdain seo chaidh 's dh'èist mi ris a-rithist. Abair òran sònraichte is àite air leth bòidheach
Hahaha! See comment below!
come on eileen
@kohrsthomas They could take part for Eurovision as the UK..
Wouldn't work for Eurovision though. Folk music never does well. :(
hello
Madrilj
Jasoo
@kohrsthomas Because the majority of people in UK are English and to them the UK is England. Its a case of sod the Welsh, Scottish and Irish. Britain has always meant England. You stand no chance of anything else. Manran did well to get into the charts. Maybe we need a Celtic charts?
It is a very good song and fantastic to see new flag-bearers of Scots Gael. However do consider that your music can be further exported if we understood your lyrics by simply providing a translation. I found them on sruthnamoile.tubmlr.com:
Do remember that foreigners, including myself from Malta, might also want to savour your talent and spread the good news around. Well done and good luck in the U.S. concerts. Saħħiet u Sliem.
Steve Borg : so they should preserve Scots Gael but sing in English ? Makes no sense
I think he meant the lyrics not the song itself
