as a Jamaican, and growing up with these things, I am so happy to see it catch on in America. Beef patties are everything, crunchy, soft, creamy, spicy. Its nice seeing the love.
We were served these for lunch in elementary school in the 80s. Didn't even know what they were back then. So many NYers grew up on these
In the late 90s I spent 10 days in the Kingston area. I flew back with these being one of my favorite new things I tried. I still crave them but don't live anywhere that sells them locally. My option is to make them or get frozen ones.
Yea, you were waiting for white America. Black folks have been eating these.
Sadly my only experience with these is dollar store frozen ones - but even those are delicious af.
@@MatthewUrso when I was in school in nyc in the 2000s they were still a staple of elementary school lunch 😂
At last, patties have gotten on the show! As a Jamaican, I'm very excited. Hoping Babish can make the curry shrimp patties. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲
Nah bredda Curry Goat Patty fi mek first. If you know you know.

One of my favorite foods of all times. A bodega Jamaican beef patty is pure comfort. But knowing the home version is made by the hands of a New Yorker, I feel this is very well validated.
Babish is from Rochester :p
Rochester, New York, yep
Babish isn't from New York he just moved there when he became a millionaire.
@@joshuapatrick682 He actually moved there WELL before then. His first episodes were in Queens with his ex-wife, then he moved to Harlem after the divorce, THEN he became a millionaire and moved to Nolita and then Brooklyn.
I love Jamaican patties and the people here in London.
i found that dipping cheesy beef patties in oxtail gravy is out of this world
Oh thank you, I have something I need to try now!
i just know this is gonna change my life
@@MyJustMeHere it certainly changed mine

living on the edge there. never go full Jamaican bumbaclat
Let me tell you, as someone from the Carribean who eats patties regularly, I was actually kinda gitty that it appeared in such a great big movie. Also even tho I am not Jamaican, it’s still the best patties. Especially the crispy flaky ones 😋
Jamaican patties are available at pretty much every independently owned corner shop in my area of Toronto, I just hope people are aware of what a gift they gave to the world.
Awesome pfp
Yessss
I think you meant "giddy", haha. But it's nice that you felt so happy about it, it's how I feel when my favorite niche foods make it into movies :D
(edit: by "niche" I mean it rarely makes its way into big movies, usually we just see typical burgers and chicken and stuff.)
Unrelated but but it’s giddy, not gitty, just in case that’s a word you use regularly 😊
It’s definitely great to see Babish handle a true Jamaican delicacy.
I’m not Caribbean in any way shape or form but spicy beef patties are one of my favorite foods ever. Can eat them all day, every day.
bros gonna be destroying their toilet
@@geenhaaien ground beef and carbs (pastry/bread)? There are a lot of worse things people are eating everyday
One of my favorite things to do with the store bought beef patties is to carefully split them open after cooking and add some irish cheddar. I know you can buy them with beef and cheese filling, but you can't buy them with my favorite cheese.
I'm gonna try that next time I have one
I've had a Jamaican patty made with a nice tender ground lamb. Absolutely wonderful
lamb is my fave flavour
for some reason, anything that isnt chicken makes me feel the weight of all the worlds guilt on my shoulders
I basically lived off pasties of all descriptions all through secondary school.
Turns out squares of pastry is really versatile. You can take inspiration from any culinary tradition. Stuff it into an appropriate pastry and it will instantly improve it. You just have to be willing to experiment.
@@bepybipebomb6938 dude, I feel ya. I just started getting into working out.
That sounds delicious
Don’t forget to make a little red dot with food coloring to mark the patties that have the spicy beef!
When I was kid in Harlem, some pizza parlors would also put pepperoni and mozzarella inside upon request. Also as the years go by, I’ve been more of a chicken patty guy. 😋
Yeah man, this. Or pop over too the Bronx and grab one on some coco bread
I live in Queens. I always get mozzarella in them at the pizzeria. It's a game changer.
I wish I lived in New York ONG😅😅😅 it seems like you guys have some of the best on the go sandwiches and pastries in the world
man I wish i grew up in NYC
You are right, finding the suet is way harder then locating pre-made beef patties. It is totally worth the effort though, fresh made beef patties are amazing.
This is the first bwb episode I've watched since the interview he did on mythical kitchen and I burst into tears when I heard him do the intro
Thank you for making me aware of that interview. That was a wild trip that got, and stayed, super heavy the entire video. Not sure it's what I wanted this morning, but I certainly needed it.
Jamaican patties are also quite common here in Costa Rica. We Costa Ricans call them "patí" here, and we make them with either ground beef or chicken.
We also add it hot pepper. And definitely our patties do NOT have cheese, especially that American cheese that is not even real cheese.
Tbh we rarely say patties. Patty is singular and plural
Yes, my grandpa calls it that.
Your version of enchiladas were incredible. Pura vida
I love how they've made it everywhere! They're common here in London UK as well :)
@@seanharrison6162 Who’s "we?"
As a Trini, I’ve never seen anyone put cheese in a patty, but you might like it with cocoa bread (with or without cheese)
In Jamaica its very common we just call it cheese patty
Chee-z patty is the BESTTTTTTT
It is more of Jamacian/NYC type of thing.
yeah they have cheese in some of them! i always order the spicy beef but ive seen some with cheese, i think a vegetable one, fish one, and we already know chicken
At a Jamaican place in Florida they used to have a Jamaican patty combo, it was a patty(chicken for me) topped with American cheese on a hot piece of coco bread.
The Golden Krust patties were my favorite thing in some of my childhood lunches. I look forward to trying this recipe since I always wanted to eat a (close to) authentic one.
Alright lets do this one more time
You did this justice! I grew up eating beef patties at my dad's deli all the time and it's still to this day my guilty pleasure. They look great!
I used to get so excited when they served these for lunch in elementary school. The lunch ladies were so nice because they would give me two knowing I would only eat the inside 😅
As a half Jamaican myself, I wholeheartedly approve of all of this. Thanks BCU!
Seeing the one food from my family's island home has lighten me up! As someone whose family is literally from the Island of Jamaica, this made me extremely excited! Thank you, Babish
Hate to be this guy but it's from "Across the Spider-verse" - looks delicious though!
You left a comment, though. Didn't you? 😉
Whoops! Don’t do VO late at night kids
🤓
if you hate to be that guy, why still do it?
@@mryannickgilbertattention lol
Arguably the greatest Caribbean street food of all time! Thank you for doing it justice Babish! Hope you try other Caribbean foods in the future!
As a Jamaican, I feel so recognized. Thanks Andrew
Jamaican patties have started popping up in UK shops all over in the last couple of years, but they don't seem super popular yet because I always find them in the reduced section. Have literally never paid full price for one. I am ok with this.
Agreed I am a big fan of patties available in the UK, if you ever find yourself in Newcastle go try the patties available at Levs!
Thanks for shining some light on Toronto's unofficial official dish. I grew up stuffing these with left over KD, oxtail gravy, and putting it all between some toasted coco bread 😋
I like how no one is mentioning the fact that the title and clip is across the spiderverse but he says from into the spiderverse
I love how you do a step forward to recreate the original experience!
I made the filling for this recipe and then tried using puff pastry as the shell. Also, since I wasn't making my own dough, I put 1.5 teaspoons of curry in the filling to make up for not having it in the shell. The filling tastes amazing. The puff pastry was too thick though, and the filling kind of got lost in it. I still have about half the filling left over, so I think tomorrow I'm going to just serve it with some rice and additional veggies so I can really enjoy that spiced beef flavor.
That was not a Scotch Bonnett that you used. Scotchies literally look like bonnets, have a shorter fatter shape, and are not as waxy/smooth looking on their skin.
That was a Habenero! They are not the same. Scochies are fruity, spicy, and have an amazing flavor. Habeneros are just hot w/no true flavor. Habeneros are like store-bought mangos, they are just not the same. A Scotch Bonnett is like a Julie or Bombay Mango and full of tropical flavor.
Being from Toronto these were a staple snack growing up and today. I was lucky, since my HS was in a Jamaican neighbourhood so we had a bakery up the street that sold fresh baked ones. Very few things hit like a piping hot spicy beef patty after school!
This looks delightful. Today at work (I’m loss prevention) I saw a 90 year old woman trying to dismantle a security device using a Babish knife. It was one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever seen. Just thought I’d share that.
"Browning sauce" Is usually some sort of savory element, by the way. While you can use gravy master, my family's always usbstituted with yoshida's soy sauce!
No browning is according to the bottle in my cupboard: caramel, water and some spices. So just browned suger water and spice. it's also used in Christmas cake/fruit cake making so not really savoy more so spiced.
@@little_leaf huh! Noted!
Can't wait for the inevitable botched when every Jamaican man says it's not up to scratch
When you made the ones with the cheese, I almost jumped out of my chair. Been following your channel for a while so I know that you know what you’re doing but when I saw that I said to myself, “oh he definitely knows what he’s doing” 😂
Enjoyed this episode
Mad props for attempting to recreate the inverted chomp, that's the level of attention to detail that keeps me coming back, rofl
Babish making these Jamaican Beef Patties is a canon event.
It's kinda amazing how I'm watching this while eating a Jamaican beef patty.
Lola Bunny's dish she made in the beginning of Tiny Toons Looniversity episode, "Souffle Girl Hey"
Did not know that spiderman had Jamaican patties in it! Very nice.
On Christmas or any day in December; you should try to make Grandma Spankenheimer's Fruitcake from Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer movie
It's been so long since I've thought about that movie, lol
"I'm kind of a whimp"
Sir, you've been on hot ones. That's not for a spice whimp.
When can we expect real-life recreations of the chocolates from Wonka? The director said they're all edible!!
If you eat coco bread stick the beef patty in the coco bread. 👌 And some oxtail gravy or curry chicken gravy 🔥🔥🔥🔥
My dining hall made these at one point this past semester. Didn’t expect to like it as much as I did! Now I know a recipe for them!
As the son of a west indian, i grew up on these. I still eat store bought, and its still fire. Make sure there's a touch of scotch bonnet in that beef, i need to feel it later.
I had never had these until they caught my eye at the grocery store the other day in the frozen section. And now I can't stop. My only question is what would happen if you deep fried them
You shouldn't deep fry them the dough would fall apart
As a Jamaican this video makes me very happy.
My home town has a regional food similar to this called the Natchitoches meat pie.
Imagine a beef patty and an empanada had a baby and that's pretty much what a Natchitoches meat pie is.
There is a Golden Krust near me on Flatbush that just re-did the inside and they put in an electric fireplace in the wall and it is the absolute fanciest Golden Krust I have ever seen.
As a Caribbean thats born in Toronto and grew up in the GTA since I was 8, I was glad the beef Pattie’s were included in Across the Spider Verse, and I could even relate on eating them back in my school days when I was on a low budget. They were less than a dollar when I was a little kid and they were $1 each in my high school years
I appreciate you attempting to reenact Spider-Man in the name of science. I’ve never had a Jamaican Beef Patty. I might have to try on the right way up though.
I love when there is a layer of freshly-fallen of beef snow. Let it beef snow, let it beef snow, let it beef snow. Now I am ready for Beef Christmas.
I used to live in Toronto, Ontario and there was a chain of Convenience stores called Rabba that had patties. I now live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and miss those patties. I found some in the frozen foods section of my grocery store, but they aren't the same.
Lifelong Torontonian here; Jamaican beef patties are a staple at every convenience store here and some subway stations too. Lived off them in high school, used to get two for $3. Most are sourced by Patty King; I’ve seen them frozen in supermarkets so maybe you can find them in Winnipeg?
Man I miss these. Loved them when I was a kid and teen but these days there's like 50 ingredients in the store bought ones so i've avoided them for the longest time. Gotta make these!
I feel like i'm most surprised that Andrew has a microwave without a turntable.😂
I don't think i've ever known anyone that has one of them, but maybe they're more common than I thought?
Yes, turmeric will stain your fingers. And your microwave, and your frying pan, and your sink, and your countertop. Source: I'm a huge curry addict.
I too survived on Jamaican Beef patties while in school! It was 2 for $3 at a little hole in the wall across the street from my HS.
1:48 “Whisk thoroughly until thoroughly whisked.”
Wiser words have never been spoken.
The dedication 🙌 I did not expect to see you venture off and hang upside down
This sounds like a dish right up my alley, and I've literally never heard of it before.
I love everything that is coming out of the Babish Universe, but the nostalgia I feel when you make a classic video like this
Hey listen there's a recipe from the movie Norbit that I've always wanted to see being made it's the limited time bbq horseradish mustard peanut butter in crusted ribs with a slight jagermeister infusion sprinkled with chamomile leaves with a horseradish and dandelion salad on a bed of rice!
I have an allergy to annatto, the stuff they use to make cheese yellow, as well as beef patty pastries. Gonna have to try this out sometime.
I have recently found out that I love jamaican beef patties. They are so flavorful and hit the spot. They are one of my go to lunches when I am working from home.
Having had patties from my Jamacian family in England can confirm: they are great, would recommend.
Spidey if you catch him it’s on the house brotha !
I've never even heard of these before! I'll make sure to try out this recipe! Thanks man!
I didn't realize that the "ATM Machine" joke was a precursor to "Chai Tea" later in the movie.
I wanna see Babish’s attempt at making the various foods “in a cup” from Wall•E
I don't think I've ever been near a Bodega. The closest I've had is a gas station with a small grocery section. So this recipe is probably the only way I'd be trying one of these.
When I was growing up in the Bronx "beef patty with cheese" meant mozzarella and I'll die on that hill as it's one of the best comfort foods ever.
Fried Orb from The Owl House episode, "Really Small Problems"
When I lived in Long Island the bodega near my house used to have these three meat and cheese patties that were out of this world. The lady that used to make them said that when she went to deglaze after Browning off the beef she would dump tequila in the pan instead of beef stock
Id love to see your take on some slow cooker recipes, easy clean up and tasty food is always welcome
Dude you are fkn hilarious! The commitment to hang upside down and your own discomfort for the content is respectable. Love your vids man haha.
Andrew was looking more like early Spot than Spiderman after that movie recreation lol.
I screamed as soon as i saw the title! I love representation for my country❤
Best Jamaican patties are from Warden Station in Scarborough, Toronto.
Absolutely definitely true.
jamaican living in jamaica here. patties are obviously better out of the toaster if you are reheating it. the crust is better crispy.
Pretty sure this was from Across the Spider-Verse not Into the Spider-Verse
it says across
I use the cheese and spicy deli mustard. It's exquisite.
I had similar while in Toronto from a Jamaican man… and I’m telling you if I could have one every day I would. I’m glad this is here
CHEE-Z BEEF PATTY FOR THE WIN! Shoutout to Mother’s in Jamaica ❤
There's something funny about knowing in the intro he's just standing there over a beef patty trying to time out his voice overlay
Are we gonna talk about the fact that the microwave andrew busts out DOESNT HAVE A TURNTABLE?!?!
while my beef patty was in the microwave i saw this in my sub box! nothing better
I miss being in NYC and getting these with added with mozzarella and pepperoni at the pizzeria. Can't even find beef patties in Denver. Shame you didn't make coco bread
Dream come true…I have been wanting to do this for a while…but I don’t put American cheese on the beef patties, I put mozzarella cheese. Plus you forgot the coco bread. Bodega and pizza shops in the upper north Bronx makes their fresh and are amazing but you need the coco bread
It's probably best to bake/air fry after microwaving the Jamaican patty. If not making it from scratch.
Ethiopian Dish from The Simpsons episode, "The Food Wife"
I've never tried deli patty. The ones you get frozen at dollar tree are amazing. 😂
Now I want a Jamaican patty lol. Interesting how it's just a savory crossiant recipe with filling so I may have to try recreating this but with lamb.
“Freshly fallen beef snow” sounds so fun but then I remember what it really is. Lol
Hanging upsidedown? The notorious fried krabby patty on a stick "mayo" shot? Lives in NY?
Can't wait to see Spider-Babish show up in the sequel 🕸️🕷️
of all the pictures you choose for your landing page you pick the one where you're covered in....white frosting.....
They go great with chai tea and naan bread
Haha
Chai means tea and naan means bread😂
Man, these are the staple of NYC and what i buy every day before work or during cold water.
ALSO DO TRY THE COCO BREAD! ITS DELICIOUS TOO! Seriously, idk if i have a terrible addiction but these and Empanadas...man. I might just be too into the bodega foods i eat a lot of.
Growing up in Toronto - Beef Patty's were a staple. But I ain't never seen nobody put cheese in their patty. We did however eat them inside a warm coco bun.
Cheesy beef is my favourite flavour. You should try it with coco bread. We used to eat a regular beef patty in a coco bread with cheese before someone had the bright idea to put the cheese in the patty
