- For many decades, the small island of Malta had probably the most unusual bus system in Europe. Fancy, historic vintage vehicles were on the road here, most of them individually assembled in Malta. The owners of the buses were not any big companies - but the drivers themselves. In 2011, however, this story ended - and overnight the island of Malta lost one of its greatest landmarks. But why? And what's the situation today?

The Maltese buses have a lot in common with the Jeepneys in the Philippines. Another interesting bus culture you will find in Skopje in North Macedonia. They use copies of the London double deckers from the 50s built in China. This also reminds of Norway in the 60s. Back then there were small factories all over the country building buses with their own design. We had VBK in Horten, Bjørge in Skien Knudsen in Kristiansand, Repstad in Søgne, Arna in Bergen etc. The last bus factory Vest in Stryn was closed some 15 yrs ago. In the same time period the bus system was changed from small to big operators. The Norwegian buses were replaced by imported buses.
I remember riding these old buses when I visited the island as a kid, some 20 years ago. It was really a special experience. It was on magnets, post cards and everywhere else. Such a shame the are no more.
My Father-in-Law was a bus driver in Malta for many year in the 1970-80's based out of Rabat. Hard tough work but he brought up a family of 11 kids on the wage...
being a bus driver in england we visited malta 2006 spent hours riding around on them the driving style was unique but found facinating
miss that busses, memories from when i was a kid and a teen, wish we still have that ones
Can't say I miss them - they were like an oven in summer, they usually had a leak somewhere, so the passenger area would be filled with exhaust and smell of diesel, and it always freaked me out that the drivers would have a shrine to whatever saint they preferred, to ward of traffic accidents!

Great Video Martin. Brings back alot of memories as i visited my parents there in the 80s while I was living in the UK. They are both from Malta and lived in Canada.
Having competing small operators is pretty common in less rich countries, but very interesting that the system was in place in Malta for so long.
Interesting that the old buses coped so much better with the conditions than the boring new ones!

That was such a sweet video. I had come across these buses in their stamp issues. In '21 and '22 they came out with stamps with these quirky buses on them. PS: I also saw your slow cars on Swedish roads video which was quite enlightening.
I visited Malta in 91 and loved the old buses, it was a big tourist attraction. The modern buses have no attraction, if I lived there I would buy a car, if I was on holiday I would hire a car.
I remmber going to malta on holiday in 1980 and these were all the busses they where amazing real caricature. At this time thay also alot of 1950s british cars in brandnew condition. On a trip to Gozo the Maltese refused to serve any germans in the ships bar, so was still raw the war then. Was beautiful country and beautiful friendly people. One best holidays i ever had.
I visited Malta in the year 2000, I remember the buses well. So sad to see they have been replaced by modern crap.

My first and last visit to malta was maybe 2002… less cars and those great old busses… I Have Heard Rumors about the Busses Coming Back… and in May2024 we’re Going back toMalta… so wie will have to take a special vintage bus Tour😮😢

I'm surprised that the trick with clocks worked. Surely locals would learn not to take the first bus because it's gonna be full and rather board another one leaving two minutes later?

The traditional Maltese buses had to go when Malta joined the EU. The old buses did not meet EU regulations, and safety rules were virtually non existent..
I am a local and can tell you that Malta is losing everything. By time we will also lose our language, the Maltese language
So sad to hear and see. I love visiting Malta, have family connections to the island, it is sad to see the culture and buildings slowly being swallowed by the influence of the eu.
To a certain extent the EU yes has some influence but mostly the cause is greed. Just imagine the last statistics are showing that Malta has around 82000 vacant properties. And trust me there is more because many are not being counted for various reasons. The EU certainly never told us to put aside our language, never told us to demolish old buildings to replace them with ugly apartments and also never told us to import a huge number of TCN, more than it is sustainable. Many Maltese are leaving and many are planning to leave in the future like myself. @@katielain6519

these buses are the philippines jeepney version of Malta but very very soon our iconic jeepneys will be fully replaced with modern jeepneys and low floor buses and finally proper bus stops lol.. also, here in the Philippines, the changes hasn't yet fully started but for years now there has been a lot of protests regarding of modernising jeepneys, but the government doesn't care and will still continue pushing the implementation.. i am pro modernising the jeepneys because I have lung issues so removing the polluting black smoke kings of the road jeepneys will be heaven for me although not all new jeepneys and buses are electric, but there will be some electric ones.
